A Flashback to East Paterson New Jersey IN the 1960's
New Jersey 1960.S
New Jersey is a state in the Northeastern and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. It is bordered on the north and east by New York, on the southeast and south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Pennsylvania, and on the southwest by Delaware. New Jersey is the fourth-smallest state but the 11th-most populous and the most densely populated of the 50 United States. New Jersey lies entirely within the combined statistical areas of New York City and Philadelphia and is the third-wealthiest U.S. state by per capita income as of 2014.[19]
New Jersey was inhabited by Native Americans for more than 2,800 years, with historical tribes such as the Lenape along the coast. In the early 17th century, the Dutch and the Swedes made the first European settlements.[20] The English later seized control of the region,[21] naming it the Province of New Jersey after the largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey,[22] and granting it as a colony to Sir George Carteret and John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton. New Jersey was the site of several decisive battles during the American Revolutionary War in the 18th century.
In the 19th century, factories in cities such as Camden, Paterson, Newark, Trenton, and Elizabeth helped to drive the Industrial Revolution. New Jersey's geographic location at the center of the Northeast megalopolis, between Boston and New York City to the northeast, and Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., to the southwest, fueled its rapid growth through the process of suburbanization in the second half of the 20th century. In the first decades of the 21st century, this suburbanization began reverting to consolidation of New Jersey's culturally diverse populace toward more urban settings within the state,[23][24] with towns home to commuter rail stations outpacing the population growth of more automobile-oriented suburbs since 2008.[25]

SS Morro Castle - Forgotten Shipwreck Tragedy of Asbury Park New Jersey
We look back in the past to an almost forgotten tragic event with a mystery attached that occurred right on the shoreline of Asbury Park New Jersey. Settle in and learn about the SS Morro Castle Disaster… the forgotten shipwreck tragedy.
If you've ever visited the east coast in New Jersey or have a passing familiarity with Bruce Springsteen's music and biography, you will know of Asbury Park; a seaside town famous for its boardwalk, beaches and attractions. But did you know about an almost forgotten event that occurred there in the 1930's…. where a tragedy was turned into a tourist attraction and that the person who allegedly caused the tragedy was never charged or arrested but years later would go to jail for something vaguely but not directly related to the event? Its quite a tale and it all actually happened more than 8 decades ago.
The tragedy was that of the SS Morro Castle; a luxury passenger ship that completed a weekly round trip voyage between Havana, Cuba and New York City. The ship was launched in 1930 and was a successful and money-making venture for the Ward Cruise Line, even during the Great Depression. The Morro Castle’s success was in part due to Prohibition, as such trips provided a relatively affordable and legal means of enjoying a non-stop drinking party.
The ship was 508 feet long and was luxuriously finished on the inside to accommodate 489 passengers and 240 crew members. The Ward Cruise Line promoted the ship ‘as one of the safest on the 7 seas’. Why is it when someone says something like that, you just know fate perks up its fate ears and gets to work on serving up some horrific irony?
On September 7, 1934, the Morro Castle was hit by hurricane-strength winds as it travelled from Havana to New York which tossed and battered the ship. During the voyage, the captain, Robert Willmott , was found dead in his bathtub of an apparent heart attack. There were rumors that he was murdered by a communist radical onboard. An inexperienced junior officer, William Warms, was appointed as the new captain. As fate would have it, the new captain’s first order of business besides dealing with the hurricane winds was to deal with a fire that had broken out on-board at around 2:50 a.m. on September 8. At that time, the ship was sailing around eight nautical miles off Long Beach Island, New Jersey, when a fire was detected in a storage locker on a first class deck of the ship. They inexperienced crew attempted to fight the fire, but to no avail. The fire spread quickly consuming the extremely flammable wood paneling and furniture throughout the ship. An SOS signal was eventually sent out. Some of the lifeboats were launched and some passengers were able to board these, but many people jumped into the giant waves. Some were rescued by the coast guard or other ships that attempted to help while others perished in the darkness. In all, 135 passengers and crew of the 549 people on board lost their lives.
On the Jersey shore, residents and local radio stations started reporting that dead bodies were washing ashore on the beaches, from Point Pleasant Beach to Spring Lake. As telephone calls and radio stations spread news of the disaster occurring along the coast on that September 8th morning, local citizens assembled to nurse the wounded, retrieve the dead, and try to unite families that had been scattered among different rescue boats that landed on the beaches.
By mid-morning, the ship was totally abandoned and its burning hull drifted ashore, coming to a stop in shallow water off Asbury Park, New Jersey, late that afternoon at almost the exact spot where another ship called the New Era had wrecked in 1854. The fires continued to smolder for the next two days.
The beached wreck of the Morro Castle remained on the Asbury Park shoreline for months. In fact, it even became a tourist attraction as it was located near the boardwalk and the Convention Hall. People came from miles to gawk at the wreck and buy souvenirs. Some even waded out to the wreck and touched its hull for ghoulish photo opportunities.
On March 14, 1935, the wreck was towed away for scrapping of the hull. However, its ultimate fate is disputed to this day. Some say it sank as it was being towed, while others say that it eventually ended up in Baltimore, where it was broken up and scrapped.
As a legacy of the tragedy, the fire aboard the Morro Castle served to improve fire safety standards and protocols for future ship design, construction and operation. Also, due to the great loss of life the disaster caused, many reforms in the licensing of merchant marine officers occurred, such as the establishment of the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
In the aftermath, there was much debate and finger pointing over what caused the fire, but no official verdict was ever determined. However, some speculate that the ship’s Chief Radio Engineer, George White Rogers,...

Driving through the George Wallace Tunnel in Mobile, AL
A Traffic Jam along Interstate 10 in Mobile, Alabama going under the Bay in the tunnel and then across the bridge.
The George Wallace Tunnel is a pair of road tunnels that carry Interstate 10 in Mobile, Alabama from the city's downtown, beneath the Mobile River, and emerge on Blakeley Island where they join the Jubilee Parkway over Mobile Bay.[1]
It, like the smaller Bankhead Tunnel a few blocks upriver from it, was constructed in Mobile at the shipyards of the Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company (ADDSCO) from 1969-1973.[1] The 2 tunnels (one for two lanes of travel eastbound, and one for two lanes of travel westbound on Interstate 10) were built in sections and floated to the proper positions, then sunk. Each section was sunk next to the previous section and joined underwater. When all sections were connected, and concrete set into place, they were pumped dry and finished out. The depth of clearance is 40 ft (12.2 m) for the ship channel over the tunnel.[1] This is the same clearance as the older Bankhead Tunnel.
TED BUNDY - Documentary
Theodore Robert Bundy was an American serial killer, kidnapper, rapist, burglar, and necrophile who assaulted and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s, and possibly earlier. Shortly before his execution—after more than a decade of denials—he confessed to 30 homicides committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978. The true victim count remains unknown, and could be much higher. Bundy was regarded by many of his young female victims as handsome and charismatic, traits that he exploited to win their trust. He typically approached them in public places, feigning injury or disability, or impersonating an authority figure, before overpowering and assaulting them at more secluded locations. He sometimes revisited his secondary crime scenes for hours at a time, grooming and performing sexual acts with the decomposing corpses until putrefaction and destruction by wild animals made further interaction impossible. He decapitated at least 12 of his victims, and kept some o...

PRESENTATION TITLE: A Perfect Storm: The Collision of Tropical Cyclones, Climate Change and Coastal Population Growth
ABSTRACT: Damage from hurricanes has increased markedly over the last century, largely the result of increased coastal population and wealth. The recent impacts of Hurricane Sandy, a minimal category 1 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale (sustained winds of ~80 mph), in New York and New Jersey highlight the vulnerability of the northeastern United States to tropical cyclone strikes. Despite the relatively low sustained wind speeds associated with Sandy, the large size, shore-perpendicular track, and slow movement of the storm resulted in a significant surge along the New Jersey and New York coastline (e.g., 2.75 m In New York City). Making matters worse, the peak in surge in New York City (NYC) and surrounds coincided with a high tide, resulting in total storm tide heights of more than 3 meters above mean sea level in NYC. Current estimates of the damage resulting from Hurricane Sandy exceed 71 billion USD and 285 lives were lost.
While direct hurricane strikes to NYC and New Jersey coast were rare in the 20th century (a cat 1 hurricane made landfall in southern NJ in 1903), hurricanes tracked slightly east and impacted Long Island and southern New England in 1938, 1944, 1954, 1960, 1976, 1985, and 1991. Looking back to the 19th and 18th centuries reveals that NYC and the New Jersey coast were struck by hurricanes in 1788, 1821 and 1893. The combination of documentary evidence and SLOSH modeling of these historic events indicates that the intensity of these storms were much greater than that of Hurricane Sandy, with the 1788 and 1821 storms likely making landfall at category 3 intensity. In southern New England storms of this intensity struck in 1938, 1869, 1815, 1675, and 1635. Given the increase in coastal population and development over the last two centuries, if storms like these were to occur today they would likely result in significantly more damage and loss of life than Hurricane Sandy.
Overwash-deposit based reconstructions of hurricane landfalls suggest that the northeastern US may have at times experienced intense hurricane strikes much more frequently than historically observed. In addition, the scale and character of some of these prehistoric overwash deposits suggests that some of these events may have been much more powerful than any the region has experienced historically. Thus, looking to assess the risk of hurricane landfalls in the region by relying on recent observed landfalls could potentially significantly underestimate the threat to the region, particularly given recent ocean warming that results in more energy available to hurricanes. Consequently in order to characterize future hurricane-related risks it is essential that we better understand past patterns of hurricane landfalls in the region and the underlying climatic forcing mechanisms that drive such changes.
On 9/11, This Canadian Town Welcomed In Stranded Passengers
In the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, United States airspace was shut down and hundreds of inbound flights needed a place to land. Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador became one of those places. That day, 7,000 shaken and disoriented passengers arrived in Gander, nearly doubling the town’s population of 11,000. The entire community got involved by literally and figuratively opening its doors to stranded passengers who never forgot the hospitality of the small Canadian town.

Global Gypsy: Balkan Romani Music, Appropriation & Representation
In the last twenty years, Balkan Gypsy music has exploded in popularity, becoming a staple at world music festivals and dance clubs throughout the United States and Western Europe. At the same time, thousands of Balkan Roma (the ethnic group frequently referred to as Gypsies) have emigrated westward due to deteriorating living conditions, and entrenched stereotypes have arisen amidst deportations and harassment. In this heightened atmosphere of xenophobia, Roma, as Europe’s largest minority and its quintessential other, face the paradox that they are revered for their music yet reviled as people. Focusing on clubs and festivals, this illustrated ethnographic presentation investigates the ramifications of the current scene for Romani performers and non-Romani musicians, producers, audiences and marketers.
Speaker Biography: Carol Silverman is Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Folklore at the University of Oregon. She has done research with Roma for over 25 years in the Balkans, Western Europe and the US. Her work explores the intersection of politics, music, human rights, gender, and state policy with a focus on issues of representation. She is also a professional performer and teacher of Balkan music, and works with the NGO Voice of Roma. Her book Romani Routes: Cultural Politics and Balkan Music in Diaspora (Oxford University Press, 2012) won the Merriam Book Prize from the Society for Ethnomusicology.

Getting stuck in traffic gets even worse for Gerry's (Brad Pitt) family with a violent zombie outbreak.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Brad Pitt stars as an ex-United Nations employee racing around the globe in a bid to halt a worldwide zombie pandemic in Marc Forster's sprawling adaptation of Max Brooks' bestselling novel of the same name. Retired U.N. investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and his family are sitting in what appears to be a typical Philadelphia traffic jam when helicopters began to circle ominously overhead, and an explosion throws the city into panic. In the blink of an eye, the streets are consumed by chaos. When Gerry learns that the catalyst for the turmoil is a highly contagious virus that transforms those who contract it into rampaging maniacs, and that legions of the infected are growing on all continents, he agrees to join his former colleagues in discovering the source of the rampant plague so that his wife and two daughters will be guaranteed safety aboard a UN fleet in the Atlantic Ocean. Upon tracing a crucial e-mail to a U.S. military base in South Korea, Gerry learns that the infection has spread more rapidly than anyone realizes. Although a subsequent trip to Jerusalem, where the government has constructed a massive wall to keep the public safe, initially offers hope that the growing horde can be kept at bay, an unexpected breach sends Gerry back into the sky in search of patient zero. Just when Gerry thinks he's traced the origins of the virus, however, the unthinkable happens. Subsequently stranded in Cardiff with a fearless Israeli soldier, Gerry quickly makes his way to a World Health Organization outpost where the few remaining scientists have hit a dead end in their search for a cure. But the struggle is far from over, and after recalling an unusual scene witnessed in Jerusalem, Gerry prepares to make a leap of faith that could prevent the downfall of humanity.
