Swimming with Florida manatees
outdoortravelchannel.tv - Endangered Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) are present in Kings Bay's warm, spring-fed waters year-round; in winter, though, their numbers swell substantially as they seek refuge from the Gulf of Mexico's chilly waters. Crystal River operators offer swimming/snorkelling tours to sites such as Three Sisters Springs, where clear waters provide a magnificent opportunity to view these aquatic mammals in their natural habitat.
In March 2012, the US Fish and Wildlife Service established a manatee refuge in the waters of Kings Bay, including its tributaries and connected waters. Prohibited activities include:
(i) Chasing or pursuing manatees
(ii) Disturbing or touching a resting or feeding manatee(s).
(iii) Diving from the surface onto a resting or feeding manatee(s).
(iv) Cornering or surrounding or attempting to corner or surround a manatee(s).
(v) Riding, holding, grabbing, or pinching or attempting to ride, hold, grab, or pinch a manatee(s).
(vi) Poking, prodding, or stabbing or attempting to poke, prod, or stab a manatee(s) with anything, including your hands and feet.
(vii) Standing on or attempting to stand on a manatee(s).
(viii) Separating a mother and calf or attempting to separate a mother and calf.
(ix) Separating a manatee(s) from a group or attempting to separate a manatee(s) from a group.
(x) Giving a manatee(s) anything to eat or drink or attempting to give a manatee(s) anything to eat or drink.
(xi) Actively initiating contact with a belted and/or tagged manatee(s) and associated gear, including any belts, harnesses, tracking devices, or antennae.
(xii) Interfering with rescue and research activities.

Manatee Snorkel: Crystal River Florida - December 30th 2017
Manatee Snorkel Crystal River Florida - December 30th 2017
Crystal River is a great place to check out Manatees during the winter months. They life to congregate near the springs because the water stays about 72 degrees Fahrenheit all year long. Manatees are very sensitive to cold, and can go into shock if the temperature drops to much. This is why it is important not to feed or give fresh water to manatees. If you alter their habits, they may not migrate where they need to go in the winter months.
This trip was conducted through American Pro Dive Center which does a very good job at making sure its patrons follow the rules while in the water. During manatee encounters, everyone must stay floating on the surface with a pool noodle to make sure no one forgets. You cannot approach a manatee, just wait for them to move around you. Sometimes the Manatees want some interaction and will come right up to you looking for a scratch. This is ok, as long as the manatee starts the interaction and it is free to leave as it chooses.
The manatees also have protected “No human” zones to retreat to if they choose. Mostly the manatees just rest at the surface and generally seem to accept us as strange looking floating manatees.
If you are interested in this type of trip while you are in Florida, Contact American Pro Dive center. They run other spring related snorkel and dive trips as well!
Thanks to my Friend Chris for providing me the video of the calf under the stairs.
And thanks to everyone for watching!

Snorkeling with Manatee Tour and Dive, Crystal River, Florida 2019
While on vacation in Florida, we swam with the manatees. Manatee Tour and Dive gave us plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with these massive animals.
KAYAKING WITH MANATEES at Hunter Springs | Crystal River, Florida
After our RV trip came to an end, we decided to stay in Florida for the holidays. This happens to be the best time to see the manatees, and our hometown, Crystal River, happens to be the best place to see them. In fact, its the only place in the world where you can legally still swim with the manatees.
We decided to take our Advanced Elements inflatable kayak out for a paddle to Hunter Springs, one of the best places to see the manatees without joining a tour. You can launch your kayak or paddleboard right there, or rent from one of the nearby shops, and find yourself surrounded by manatees right off the shoreline. It really is an incredible thing to witness.

Swim with the Manatees in Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River, Florida
For all the information about this adventure, visit our blog:
As we did our research on Florida, manatees and springs seemed to be a reoccurring theme. Even though you see them everywhere in Florida, they are a protected species. Therefore, the only place you can swim with the manatees legally is around Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River, Florida. And the only way to get there is either by kayaking, paddleboarding or taking a tour. We opted to rent our kayaks from Hunter Springs Kayaks as we wanted to spend more time exploring the area.

Majestic Manatee Tour Crystal River, Florida
Crystal River, Florida is one of the places where many manatees call home during the winter months. It's constant 72 degree spring water is perfect for them during this season. I have to say, swimming with manatees is one of the most amazing life experiences and adventures ever. My inner child (who desperately wanted to be a Marine Biologist) was in all her glory watching and observing, and just basking in their awesomeness. They are so interesting to watch and we saw about 6 of them. They don't do much when they're resting, but watching their faces as they come up to take a breath or two then head back down to continue their nap is so cool to see. And who knew that algae grew on them and the fish eat the algae off of them. Some even had barnacles that grew on them. The ones resting near rocks looked just like rocks and I'm fascinated by how something so big can be so camouflage but also glide and move so smoothly. Did you know that manatees only have about 3-4% body fat?? Hard to believe! That was just one of the interesting facts that Captain Colin told us about on your tour. We highly recommend the Majestic Manatee Tour with Captain Colin and swim guide, Mikayle. They were AMAZING and this was an awesome trip for the whole family. Even our 6 year old had a wonderful time.

The West Indian Manatee is a species of aquatic mammals very closely related to the dewgong, that can be found along the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. The ones seen here are a subspecies known as Florida manatees. Crystal River is a special environment because it has warmer water from underground vents being flushed out by the thousands of gallons every day. In the winter time, this saves the manatees from the cold water in the gulf. Without these special environments manatees would struggle to survive the cold. Manatees are a threatened species, with only 6,000 recorded manatees left, however in this Florida county alone, there are over 1,000. Manatees are gentle, and will not ever hurt a person on purpose, however due to their large size and incredible strength, it's important to give the manatees space while swimming with them, as to not put any stress on them.
