Siglufjörður offers a variety of interesting and enjoyable things to do and see -- both for the tourist and for those in search of some outdoor activity.
The winter turns the town into a paradise for the skier and is a dream come true for the outdoor enthusiast. Here they have a choice of trying some cross-country skiing, slalom, skating, or zipping across the snow on a snowmobile.
During the summer, it is the mountains, the lake and the black sandy shores which call to us, and there is a wide selection of walks and hikes in both mountain and valley to tempt the visitor. A few hours walking through the area's rugged landscape gives one the chance to savour the peace and tranquillity which emanates from these natural elements.
The recreational possibilities are almost endless; it is possible to go sea angling or angling in the waters of Hólsá river -- and we must not forget that it can also be fun just fishing from the end of the pier. Midnight sails and trips across the Arctic Circle can be arranged as well. It is possible to organise special activities for those who so wish, such as combining a walking and a sailing trip by e.g. walking out along Héðinsfjörður fiord then returning home by sea. For golf enthusiasts there is a 9 hole golf course at Siglufjörður, and for swimmers, a good swimming pool.
The Síldarminjasafnið herring museum is the largest marine and industrial museum in Europe. It is housed in three widely differing premises where the visitor can become acquainted with the pursuit of the silver darlings and the processing of that valuable commodity. Síldarminjasafnið received the European Museums Award, the Michletti Award, in 2004. The Folk Music Center is also to be found in Siglufjörður.

Devanshi Khetarpal lives in Bhopal, India. Her work has been published in Indian Literature (a publication of Sahitya Akademi), Vayavya, TRACK//FOUR, Souvenir, and Drunk in a Midnight Choir, among others. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Inklette Magazine, a Poetry Reader for Blueshift Journal, and a Co-Managing Editor for Sprout Magazine. She has previously served as a Poetry Editor for Moledro Magazine and Phosphene Literary Journal. She has been a poetry mentor for Glass Kite Anthology's summer writing workshop. Her poems have been recognised by Hollins University and Columbia College Chicago. She is an alumna of the prestigious Iowa Young Writers' Studio at the University of Iowa, and the UVA Young Writers Workshop at the University of Virginia, and has previously attended writing workshops at Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. This summer, she attended the AAL Writers' Retreat in Siglufjordur, Iceland. She will start college at New York University as a student of Comparative Literature and Creative Writing from August 2017.

Rímur poetry is an important cultural heritage of the Icelandic nation. Steindór, the most distinguished Icelandic chanter of rímur, performs twelve of his favourite poems on this recording, accompanied by the mystical and haunting music of the award winning film composer Hilmar Örn. Many of the best Icelandic musicians appear on Stafnbúi, f.e. Sigríður Thorlacius from the band Hjaltalín, Páll frá Húsafelli who plays his stoneharps, and Örn Magnússon who plays on the old Icelandic violin called Langspil, and two string quartets with musicians from the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra.
Includes a beautiful 80 page trilingual (Icelandic, English and German) informative hardback book describing the history of the rímur and excerpts of all the texts, plus spectacular photos from the Icelandic nature.
The haunting collection Stafnbúi opens like a hymn from another time. And the vibrantly beating heart of it is of another time. This collection of traditional rímur poetry and music from Steindór Andersen and Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, is a history lesson in the most affecting way. However, the significance and beauty of a recording like this is it does not feel like one. The arresting presence of Steindór’s voice captivates one’s attention the way staring at a snowy sea does, simple but deceivingly powerful. The longer you stare, the deeper you are drawn in.
Hilmar’s music is an intrinsic and intimate platform for Steindór. Its slow undulations call to mind the Icelandic landscape these poems originated from. Each piece is performed with enough emotion to deftly transcend the language barrier into an experience in of itself.

Some info on Steindór Andersen and Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson:
Steindór Andersen is the most distinguished Icelandic chanter of rímur. Under his presidency the rímur-chanting society Iðunn (established 1929) was transformed as Steindór's unique command of the genre and his magnetic stage presence inspired nothing short of a revival. His collaboration with the Icelandic group Sigur Rós, resulting in tours in Europe and the United States, has sparked an unprecedented interest in this hitherto neglected musical form. Steindór has of late been part of various projects whose aim has been cross-cultural fertilization with the intent of bringing the rímur to a wider audience, but at the same time he has been instrumental in preserving the bare bones of the tradition so that others may draw inspiration from this simple, yet elaborate, form of music and poetry. Steindór has for many years worked as a fisherman and as captain of his own ship called Iðunn.
Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson has been a prominent part of the Icelandic music scene since the early eighties, shifting with relative ease between genres. His work has been classified as rock, electronics, avant-garde, jazz and neo-classical. He has written music for over 40 feature films and received nominations and awards for several of them, such as Children of Nature, In the Cut and Beowulf and Grendel.
* Hilmar is also the allsherjargoði (high priest) of the Ásatrúarfélagið (the Ásatrú Association).
Steindór's and Hilmar's work with the group Sigur Rós has received great acclaim and two Nordic Council Music Prize nominations. April 2002 saw the premiere of the large orchestral and choral piece, Odin’s Raven Magic, which they performed at the Barbican Centre with the London Sinfonietta and The Sixteen. The same piece was performed at the Reykjavík Arts Festival one month later to a standing ovation. Odin’s Raven Magic was also performed at art festivals in Norway and France in 2003 and 2004. In recent years Steindór and Hilmar have travelled widely with an ever changing rímur repertoire, which they usually perform with a local string quartet and sometimes local folk instrumentalists. They have performed in Germany, Italy, Ireland, England, Wales, Serbia, Bosnia and Poland and always to high acclaim.
