The Herring Era Museum is located in Siglufjörður, Iceland. It is Iceland‘s largest maritime museum[1] and the only Icelandic museum who has won the European Museum Award.[1] The museum officially opened in 1994[2] in Róaldsbrakki, an old salting station which had been left abandoned after the collapse of the herring stock in 1969. Herring Era Museum - Siglufjörður’s Herring Era Museum - Follow the Herring Era Museum
Lovingly created over 16 years, this award-winning museum does a stunning job of recreating Siglufjörður’s boom days between 1903 and 1968. Herring Era Museum Set in three buildings that were part of an old Norwegian herring station, the museum brings the work and lives of the town’s inhabitants vividly to life.
Start at the red building on the left, and move right. In the first building, photographs, displays and a 1930s English film show the fishing and salting process, while upstairs the accommodation block looks as though the workers have just left. Next door is a recreated reducing plant, where herrings were separated into oil (a valuable commodity) and meal (used for fertiliser). The third building is a recreation of harbour life, with actual trawler boats and equipment based on life on the busy pier during the boom days.

Day 8 in Iceland we had dropped off some food from Husavik to our next guesthouse - Guesthouse Svinavatn. Then we headed back North of Iceland to visit the Herring Era Museum. Watch the video to find out more about the Herring Era Museum and why we decided to visit it. The journey to the museum was so exciting! We aren't much of museum goers but this was a much interactive one.

Siglufjordur 2012 - Welcome by The Herring House!
Siglufjörður offers a variety of interesting and enjoyable things to do and see -- both for the tourist and for those in search of some outdoor activity.
The winter turns the town into a paradise for the skier and is a dream come true for the outdoor enthusiast. Here they have a choice of trying some cross-country skiing, slalom, skating, or zipping across the snow on a snowmobile.
During the summer, it is the mountains, the lake and the black sandy shores which call to us, and there is a wide selection of walks and hikes in both mountain and valley to tempt the visitor. A few hours walking through the area's rugged landscape gives one the chance to savour the peace and tranquillity which emanates from these natural elements.
The recreational possibilities are almost endless; it is possible to go sea angling or angling in the waters of Hólsá river -- and we must not forget that it can also be fun just fishing from the end of the pier. Midnight sails and trips across the Arctic Circle can be arranged as well. It is possible to organise special activities for those who so wish, such as combining a walking and a sailing trip by e.g. walking out along Héðinsfjörður fiord then returning home by sea. For golf enthusiasts there is a 9 hole golf course at Siglufjörður, and for swimmers, a good swimming pool.
The Síldarminjasafnið herring museum is the largest marine and industrial museum in Europe. It is housed in three widely differing premises where the visitor can become acquainted with the pursuit of the silver darlings and the processing of that valuable commodity. Síldarminjasafnið received the European Museums Award, the Michletti Award, in 2004. The Folk Music Center is also to be found in Siglufjörður.

Niels á Velbastað skipar brot av Hørpu rímu saman við Dansifelagnum í Havn. Her verður Hørpu ríma brúkt til bandadans, og seinasta ørindi meðan hosubondini verða bundin verður gjørt klárt at ríða ediling - hetta er tó ikki við. Lesast kann meiri um bandadans her: (í bókini Danse- og sanglege på Færøerne: oprindelse, udbredelse, nutidig tradition sum Andrea Susanne Opielka hevur skrivað).
Í dansitíðini skipar Dansifelagið í Havn vanliga fyri barnadansi í Norðurlandahúsinum fríggjakvøld kl. 20.00, og vanligum dansi í Hornahúsunum, kl. 22.00. Sí nærri á ella
Niels á Velbastað is the lead singer of part of Hørpu ríma together with Dansifelagið í Havn (the Faroese chain dance association of Tórshavn). This is not the tradition Faroese chain dance but a another kind of dance used with some of the same ballads - this type, in particular, is called »bandadansur«.
