Places to see in ( Rome - Italy ) Fontana Barcaccia
The Fontana della Barcaccia is a Baroque-style fountain found at the foot of the Spanish Steps in Rome's Piazza di Spagna. Pope Urban VIII commissioned Pietro Bernini in 1623 to build the fountain as part of a prior Papal project to erect a fountain in every major piazza in Rome. The fountain was completed between 1627 and 1629 by Pietro possibly along with the help of his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini, especially after his father's death in August 29, 1629.
The sculptural fountain is made into the shape of a half-sunken ship with water overflowing its sides into a small basin. The source of the water comes from the Acqua Vergine, an aqueduct from 19 BCE. Bernini built this fountain to be slightly below street level due to the low water pressure from the aqueduct. Water flows from seven points of fountain: the center baluster; two inside the boat from sun-shaped human faces; and four outside the boat.
According to legends, when the Tiber River flooded in 1598, water carried a small boat into the Piazza di Spagna. When the water receded, a boat was deposited in the center of the square, and it was this event that inspired Bernini's creation. The fountain is decorated with the papal coat of arms of the Barberini family as a reminder of Pope Urban VIII's ancestry.

Barcaccia Fountain - Spanish Steps, Rome
Tourists collecting water from the 4-centuries old Barcaccia Fountain for drinking.
Fontana della Barcaccia Fountain of the Old Boat is a Baroque fresh-water fountain, so named because it is in the shape of a half-sunken ship with water overflowing its bows.
The Barcaccia Fountain projected the historic flood of the River Tiber in 1598 which carried a small fishing boat to this spot. Another reason Pietro Bernini and son Gian Lorenzo Bernini, sculptured the sinking boat is to avoid water games as there were low water pressure from the aqueduct. The fountain's jets were placed below street level to better control the flow of water from nearby underground reservoirs.
The fountain is located in the center of the Spanish Square where the Spanish Steps leads up the two bell-towers Trinita Church above.

Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the Old Boat) is a Baroque fresh-water fountain in the Piazza di Spagna in Rome, just below the Spanish Steps. It is so named because it is in the shape of a half-sunken ship with water overflowing its bows. The fountain was commissioned by Pope Urban VIII and was completed in 1627 by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The shape was chosen because, prior to the river walls being built, the Tiber often flooded and in 1598 there was a particularly bad flooding and the Piazza di Spagna was flooded up to a metre.
Once the water withdrew, a boat was left behind in the square.
The English poet John Keats could hear the sound of the fountain's water flowing soothingly from his deathbed. He said it reminded him of lines from the 17th-century play Philaster, or Love Lies a-Bleeding (1611) and was the source for his epitaph: Here lies one whose name was writ in water.
When in Rome, don't miss it!

In History is.....
Fontana della Barcaccia
The literal translation of Barcaccia is the “Fountain of the Old Boat.” This fountain was built as a monument to the great flood of the river Tiber in the Christmas of 1598. During that time, Rome was flooded in its entirety that the only possible way was to go about in boats. According to stories, a boat was left in the square when the flood water subsided. Hence, the inspiration for this work of art.
Fontana della Barcaccia is located at the Piazza di Spagna, and it can be seen when you are on the Spanish Steps.
fontana-del-barcaccia-romeIt was commissioned by Pope Urban VII and is again a work of Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo. Later on Gian Lorenzo Bernini became more famous than his father, as he accomplished many masterpieces like squares, churches and fountains across Rome.
Symmetry can be observed with the fountain. The boat is also half sunk, below street level. Unlike most fountains in Rome, there is a low pressure on the water of the Barcaccia, therefore there is no water spectacle. This has something to do with the low pressure of the Aqua Vergine, a fresh water aqueduct where the fountain’s water is derived from.
The fountain was built in the style of sumptuous Baroque with travertine as its material. Travertine is a type of limestone derived from the precipitation of calcium carbonate in hot springs. Travertine is especially abundant in Tivoli.
