Fontebranda is one of the medieval fountains of Siena, located in Terzo di Camollia, in the Contrada of Oca, near the Porta of Fontebranda. The fountain was built in the 13th century by the Guild of the Wool-makers (Lana).
The first mention of a fountain was in 1081, and documents speak of enlargement by Bellamino in 1193, and finally rebuilt in its present form in 1246. The fountain is cited by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy (Inferno - Canto trentesimo|Inferno XXX, vv. 76-78).
The fountain front has three Gothic arches and a crenellated roof. The roof spans a tank fed by water traveling for kilometers to reach the city.

The fan-shaped central square, Piazza del Campo, is the site of the Palazzo Pubblico, the Gothic town hall, and Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th-century tower with sweeping views from its distinctive white crown. The city’s 17 historic “contrade” (districts) extend outward from the piazza.

Siena city of art, cultured city, city of good food, city of the Palio. Many are his faces, the city alone. Nestling in the Tuscan hills it still maintains its appearance and the time in Siena seems to have stopped at the thirteenth century, when the city began to enrich itself with an artistic and architectural heritage that has forever consecrated its glory.
UNESCO entered Siena in the world heritage list in 1995, for having wisely preserved important characteristics of its medieval structure, defining it as a masterpiece of dedication and inventiveness in which the buildings were designed to be adapted to the entire design of the urban structure
Made unique the city lived its best period during the turbulent years of the wars with neighboring Florence ; it was in this period in fact that many great artists had the opportunity to express their art. Names like Duccio di Boninsegna , Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers , the great masters of the Sienese school to name a few.
Also in this period the city was adorned with marvelous monuments, such as the Duomo, the Palazzo Pubblico and the Torre del Mangia. Behind the realization of many of these works, there was the Government of the Nine , one of the main magistracies of the Sienese Republic, particularly active and fruitful towards the middle of the thirteenth century; the government fell after the plague epidemic that struck the city in 1348, killing three fifths of the population.
To describe Siena it is a must to start from its main square, Piazza del Campo , the same where the Palio takes place , the same rich in restaurants and bars, the same in which the tourists and the inhabitants pause ecstatically upside down for admire the surrounding monuments. It has a characteristic trapezoidal shape and is slightly downhill towards the center, where is the source Gaia , a copy of the fifteenth-century work of Jacopo della Quercia.
All around the square, monumental buildings like Palazzo Sansedoni and the Palazzo Pubblico . Looking at the square from the top of its 102 meters is the Torre del Mangia which dates back to the forties of the fourteenth century; its height is equal to that of the bell tower of the Duomo to symbolize the balance reached between the divine power and the earthly one. At the foot of the tower stands the Cappella di Piazza , a marble tabernacle with splendid sculptures inserted in the Gothic niches. All in the same square.

Siena Baptistry (Tuscany Italy) Sienne Baptistère 锡耶纳洗礼 Baptisterio de Siena シエナ洗礼堂
In Christian architecture the baptistery is the separate centrally-planned structure surrounding the baptismal font. The baptistery may be incorporated within the body of a church or cathedral and be provided with an altar as a chapel. In the early Church, the catechumens were instructed and the sacrament of baptism was administered in the baptistery. The sacramental importance and sometimes architectural splendor of the baptistery reflect the importance of baptism to Christians. The octagonal plan of the Lateran Baptistery, the first structure expressly built as a baptistery, provided a widely-followed model, which might be twelve-sided, or even circular as at Pisa. In a narthex or anteroom the catechumens were instructed and made their confession of faith before baptism. The main interior space centered upon the baptismal font in which those to be baptized were immersed thrice. Three steps led down to the floor of the font, and over it might be suspended a gold or silver dove. The iconography of frescos or mosaics on the walls were commonly of the scenes in the life of Saint John the Baptist. The font was at first always of stone, but latterly metals were often used. The Lateran baptistery's font was fed by a natural spring. When the site had been the palatial dwelling of the Laterani, before Constantine presented it to Bishop Miltiades, the spring formed the water source for the numerous occupants of the domus. It will be quickly apprehended that as the requirements for Christian baptisteries expanded, Christianization of sacred pagan springs presented natural opportunities.Cassiodorus, in a letter written in AD 527, described a fair held at a former pagan shrine of Leucothea, in the still culturally Greek region of south Italy, which had been Christianized by converting it to a baptistery. There are also examples of the transition from miraculous springs to baptisteries from Gregory of Tours (died c.594) and Maximus, bishop of Turin (died c. 466).

Places to see in ( Siena - Italy ) Piazza del Mercato
Places to see in ( Siena - Italy ) Piazza del Mercato
The nineteenth-century central loggia is commonly called “Tartarugone” (Big Turtle). The Piazza del Mercato (Market Square), characterized by a central nineteenth-century loggia called “Tartarugone” (which was the headquarters of the market), is dominated by the dimension of the rear facade of Palazzo Pubblico, no less imposing and elegant than that of Piazza del Campo.
From the opposite side of the Palazzo, the square is an authentic balcony over the countryside, where your gaze can reach even Radicofani and Mount Amiata. Below, accessible through a small unpaved road and the Gate with the same name, there is Valle di Porta Giustizia.
In the Middle Ages the sentenced to death came out of the prisons under Palazzo Pubblico, crossed the Market square, walked the underlying Via dei Malcontenti and continued, to exit Siena, through Porta Giustizia. This path by the sad past leads today to a very nice and joyful place: Orto de' Pecci. The whole valley is an area cultivated with gardens since the sixteenth century and now open to the public. An ideal place to rest, walk, or for children to play in.
