Traveler's Camp Fest 2016
Mary Bella and I went to Padre Island Texas last year for the first annual Camp Fest. We met Eric and Jax of Nomadic Fanatic Fame.
The Gulf, Okaloosa Island, Fort Walton Beach, Florida
Today we finally were able to visit The Gulf restaurant on Okaloosa Island in Fort Walton Beach. We have been wanting to visit for a while but just never had the time or wasn't in the area, that changed today!!!
After arriving at the Gulf it is quiet apparent that this is not your typical sea side restaurant. The first thing you notice is most of the building structure is made of shipping containers and old re-purposed building materials. According the the Gulf's website, using recycled building material is their attempt at reducing their carbon footprint and practicing sustainability. I didn't have a special machine that could measure their current carbon footprint that day, but I have to admit, the place is really cool and put together very well.
We thought the food was just OK, however they have a big menu with lots to offer that changes often. One thing we do like is the menu items seem to be all locally sourced products which mean the fish is fresh from the Gulf of Mexico and the fruits and vegetables served are from area farms.
What really sets the Gulf apart from most restaurants is their outdoor setting. In the center you will find a large bar where drinks can be order and taken to one of the may sporadically located couches, hammocks or lounge areas. You will also find ping pong tables and even tiny huts that Coleton referred to as Onion chairs.
If being outside does not suit you, they offer relaxing indoor dining with an awesome refreshing air conditioner that we took advantage of as it was crazy hot and humid when we visited. Word of warning though, get a table quick, the air conditioned space is limited and we watched it fill up extremely fast!
Since the Gulf is situated on the water it offers both an amazing view as well as the unique ability to arrive by boat or jet ski which we will be doing soon and looking really forward to.
Before you leave a visit to the gift shop is a must where you will find many different trinkets as well as tee shirts and souvenirs.
We did not like the fact that water is not offered at the soda fountain. I purchased a drink with the intention of filling it up with water only to find out the only water available are sold in bottle form. I guess this is a money making scheme they can take advantage of on super hot days like this one, and this being a business I have to admit it is a good tactic.
Since this day was so miserably hot and humid on the day we went I feel like it is not fair to rank it at this time as the weather which they have no control of would drastically affect the score. Bottom line however, this is a very unique place which we highly recommend visiting. If we had to do it again, we would do it in the evening as the sun was setting since this is mid July!

BP Holdings Oil Spill News Update
Dear EarthTalk: The three-year anniversary of the 2010 BP oil spill just passed. What do green groups think of the progress since in restoring the region? --Mary Johannson, New York, N.Y.
When an undersea oil well blew out 50 miles off the Louisiana coast on April 20, 2010, and caused an explosion on the Deep water Horizon drilling rig above it (killing 11 workers), no one knew that an even bigger disaster was yet to come. Over the next three months, 4.9 million gallons of crude poured into the water before BP could get the wellhead capped to stop the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.
According to BP, which has already spent $14 billion on clean-up and restoration, the Gulf is returning to baseline conditions prior to the disaster.
No company has done more, faster to respond to an industrial accident than BP did in response to the Deepwater Horizon accident in 2010, the company reported.
But not everybody sees the situation that way. Many environmentalists are concerned that, while BP has done a thorough job removing visible oil from the water column and surface, little has been done to repair damage to marine life and ecosystems.
Three years after the initial explosion, the impacts of the disaster continue to unfold, says Doug Inkley, senior scientist at the National Wildlife Federation. A recent report by the group found that the 3-year-old spill is still having a serious negative effect on wildlife populations in the Gulf. For one, dolphin deaths in the region have remained above average every single month since the disaster. In the first two months of 2013, infant dolphins were found dead at six times pre-spill average rates.
These ongoing deaths -- particularly in an apex predator like the dolphin -- are a strong indication that there is something amiss with the Gulf ecosystem, Inkley said.
Gulf dolphins aren't the only ones suffering. NWF found that more than 1,700 sea turtles were stranded in coastal areas of the Gulf between May 2010 and November 2012 -- almost three times the pre-spill rate for the animals. Researchers have also detected changes in the cellular function of Gulf killifish, a common bait fish at the base of the food chain. And a coral colony seven miles from the offending wellhead struggles due to oil and dispersants compromising its ability to rebuild itself.
The oil disaster highlighted the gaps in our understanding of the Gulf of Mexico, Florida State University oceanographer Ian MacDonald said. What frustrates me is how little has changed over the past three years. In many cases, funding for critical research has even been even been cut, limiting our understanding of the disaster's impacts.
MacDonald and others are optimistic that a federal court will find BP accountable for further damages in a civil trial now underway. NWF said that substantially more money is needed to carry out restoration efforts vital to the biological and economic stability of the Gulf region. Despite the public relations blitz by BP, this spill is not over, said NWF's David Muth. Justice will only be served when BP and its co-defendants pay to restore the wildlife and habitats of the Mississippi River Delta and the Gulf of Mexico.
Dear EarthTalk: Is nature photography good or bad for the environment? -- Cal Moss, Camden, Maine
Nature photography is a wonderful way to share the beauty and wonder of the natural world with others who don't have the opportunity to see a given subject first-hand. An obvious benefit of the art is raising awareness about and generating empathy for special landscapes and species. But too much love can be a bad thing if landscapes are trampled and wildlife is frightened -- all in the name of leaving only footprints.
The use of photography as a conservation tool dates back as far as photography itself. William Henry Jackson's photos from his travels with the Hayden Expedition of the 1860s to survey the American West helped convince Congress to create Yellowstone National Park in 1872 -- and as such played a role in the birth of the worldwide movement to set aside special places as national parks. Ansel Adams carried this torch forward a century later; opening up millions of viewers' eyes to the splendor of many an iconic western landscape. And more recently wildlife photographers have gotten up close and personal to wild animals large and small so the rest of us can appreciate their beauty out of harm's way.

Snowbirds Flock Early
GULF SHORES, Ala. (WPMI) They come from up North and from the Midwest. It's estimated that more than 60,000 snowbirds make their way to the Gulf Coast each year. Lately in recent years it seems a good number are coming down earlier and staying for more months than in past years.
As always weather is a factor, but so is getting a good deal and getting a good place to stay. When we heard snowbirds had been moving in early we decided to check out the Gulf State Park campgrounds.
Even before Nov. 1 they were checking in early so, said Ashley Guinn with the State Park System. By next week the campground expects to be full to capacity, nearly 500 spots will be taken.
The prediction was that they would get the Snowmageddon again that hasn't happened. I know Minnesota just got hit with cold weather, said Kay Magham with Gulf Shores, Orange Beach Tourism.
The weather up North is a key factor but folks checking in as early as Nov. 1 is now becoming a trend.
Just before Thanksgiving but they said that it would be best if everyone got down here before the first of each month so that's why we came down on Nov. 1, said George Griffith who is a snowbird from Kansas City.
Once you see the ocean its hard not to get addicted to it, said Elaine Griffith from Kansas City.
One couple from Ohio checked in back in October then made the trip back home for the holidays and now they are back.
We still went home for Christmas yes. How cold was it there? It was about 23 degrees when we left last night. And today its about 9, said Claudia Wittenberg from a snowbird from Ohio.
Most snowbirds stay through March impacting the economy with over $30 million and that footprint goes even further.
They really make it a second home. A lot of snowbirds get very involved in the community. They've raised money for the fire departments

BLACK FOOTPRINTS IN THE SAND ON PENSACOLA BEACH. 02/06/11
As I was walking on my walk back to my car, I noticed someone else left some Black footprints. It seemed pretty white on top in some spots until I started moving the sand around and look what was underneath. REALLY upset me. I saw this right after I watched from about 200 yards away from the parking lot, it looked like someone was making a Commercial. There where two vans and one jeep with Kayak's on top and they keep driving 3-4 times in a circle into the parking lot while someone was Videoing them!
