Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce at Fort Abraham Lincoln
After Colonel Nelson A. Miles received the Nez Perce surrender at Bear Paw Mountain, he was ordered to take them to Fort Abraham Lincoln. It was a cold run in the coming winter of 1877-1879, but they arrived in November of 1877. The citizens of Bismarck, Dakota Territory treated them with the most kindness and actually wanted them to stay at Fort Abraham Lincoln.
The Nez Perce were transferred to St. Paul, Minnesota, then taken south to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). Eventually the Nez Perce were allowed to move back to the Northwest, but only to share a reservation with another tribe on the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington. They eventually were given a reservation in Idaho.
Chief Joseph used every media opportunity to make the country aware of his people's plight. He was not a war chief.

FDR Visits Dust Bowl North Dakota
In 1936, the American economy was struggling to recover from the Great Depression. The Depression hit bottom in 1933, but the recovery was slowed in rural states by droughts and grasshopper plagues, leading to crop loss and economic hardship. In July and August of 1936, President Franklin Roosevelt toured drought-stricken western states, including North Dakota, to observe the conditions firsthand. In a fireside chat one month later, on September 6th, 1936, the President addressed the drought, the plight of farmers, and labor issues.

Plains Indians earthlodges at North Dakota's Knife River Indian Villages NHS
At Knife River Indian Village in North Dakota, earthlodge people hunted bison and other games, but were in essence farmers living in villages along the Missouri River and its tributaries. This site was a major Native American trade center for hundreds of years prior to becoming an important market place for fur traders.

North Dakota is a midwestern U.S. state dominated by the Great Plains. Its eastern city of Fargo showcases Native American and modern art at the Plains Art Museum. The area's immigrant history is honored at the Scandinavian Heritage Association in the city of Minot. The Great Plains give way to the rugged Badlands near the border with Montana, where Theodore Roosevelt National Park spans the Little Missouri River.

Lewis & Clark: Fort Mandan ND
Washburn ND: Fort Mandan replica where the Lewis & Clark expedition spent the winter. The actual original location is thought to be 7-8 miles north, but the remains of the fort have never been found, since the river has probably swallowed up the sight.
Fort Dearborn
Fort Dearborn was an United States fort built in 1803 beside the Chicago River, in what is now Chicago, Illinois. It was constructed by troops under Captain John Whistler and named in honor of Henry Dearborn, then United States Secretary of War. The original fort was destroyed following the Battle of Fort Dearborn during the War of 1812, and a new fort was constructed on the same site in 1816. By 1837, the fort had been de-commissioned. Parts of the fort were lost to both the widening of the Chicago River in 1855, and a fire in 1857. The last vestiges of Fort Dearborn were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The site of the fort is now a Chicago Landmark, located in the Michigan–Wacker Historic District.
Historic events
The history of human activity in the Chicago area prior to the arrival of European explorers is mostly unknown. In 1673, an expedition headed by Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette was the first recorded to have crossed the Chicago Portage and traveled along the Chicago River.[2] Marquette returned in 1674, and camped for a few days near the mouth of the river; then moved on to the portage, where he camped through the winter of 1674–75. Joliet and Marquette did not report any Indians living near the Chicago River area at that time, although archaeologists have discovered numerous Indian village sites dating to that time elsewhere in the greater Chicago area. Two of de La Salle's men built a stockade at the portage in the winter of 1682/1683.
In 1682, René Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle had claimed a large territory (including the Chicago area), for France. In 1763, following the French and Indian War, the French ceded this area to Great Britain, and it became a region of the Province of Quebec. Great Britain later ceded the area to the United States (at the end of the American Revolutionary War), although the Northwest Territory remained under de facto British control until about 1796. Following the Northwest Indian War of 1785–1795, the Treaty of Greenville was signed at Fort Greenville (now Greenville, Ohio), on August 3, 1795. As part of the terms of this treaty, a coalition of Native Americans and Frontiers men, known as the Western Confederacy, turned over to the United States large parts of modern-day Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Illinois. This included the six square miles centered at the mouth of the Chicago River.
