This interesting place is located next to the harbor, which itself is quite close to the railway station. So if you are planning to visit the Fort-Carré, make sure you are ready to walk! The fort has two main levels. First level can be simply visited without the guide while the second one should be a guided walk. The visit is easy, pleasant and not too expensive - the price is 3€.

[FR] Si vous êtes vraiment ennuyé de la plage ou il est juste trop de monde, tête vers le Fort-Carré pour un bon goût de l'aspect historique d'Antibes. Cet endroit intéressant est situé à côté du port, qui lui-même est assez proche de la gare. Donc, si vous prévoyez de visiter le Fort-Carré, assurez-vous que vous êtes prêt à marcher! Le fort a deux niveaux principaux. Premier niveau peut être simplement visité sans le guide tandis que le second devrait être une promenade guidée. La visite est facile, agréable et pas trop cher - le prix est de 3 €.

Located on the peninsula of Saint-Roch, the Fort Carré is built on a rock at 26m above sea level. The walkway is 43m high and offers a 360 degree panoramic view. Built on the orders of King Henry II of France in the second half of the sixteenth century, this simply amazing architecture, significantly improved by Vauban, was long used as a sentry post for the nearby border with the County of Nice, hostile at the time, and as a defensive post for Antibes, the last French port before this border. The Fort is surrounded by a protected 4 hectare park featuring typically Mediterranean flora and fauna.
Le Fort Carré fut construit mi-xvie siècle sous Henri II par monsieur de Saint-Rémy. Deux personnages ont été désignés : François de Mandon de Saint-Rémy et Jean de Renaud de Saint-Rémy, tous les deux ayant des attaches avec Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Jean de Saint-Rémy a construit la Tour Saint-Laurent autour de laquelle s'est développé le Fort carré. Il a été légèrement retouché à la fin xviie siècle sous Louis XIV par Vauban.

ort Carré, often Fort Carré d'Antibes, is a 16th-century star-shaped fort of four arrow-head shaped bastions, that stands on the outskirts of Antibes, France. Henri de Mandon built the fort and then during the 17th century, the Marquis de Vauban redeveloped it.
The Romans probably built the first fortifications at Antibes. In 1553, a tower called la tour Saint-Florent was built around a preexisting chapel. Henry III had four bastions added in 1565, whereupon it became Fort Carré (the squared fort).
In the 1680s, Vauban strengthened Fort Carré, adding traverses to protect against ricochet fire and exchanging the stone parapets, which were liable to scatter deadly splinters when hit by shot, for brick ones. Vauban also enlarged the embrasures and added outer walls to the fortification.
Later, the fort's design was modified to take eighteen cannon. The entrance to the fort is through a triangular work that protrudes from the walls, and which is loopholed and pierced by a heavy wooden door. From here, there is a narrow bridge that leads into the fort itself via the flank of one of the arrow-headed bastions. Inside, there are barrack buildings for officers and men as well as the ancient chapel, which has been preserved through the successive stages of military development of the site.
In addition to improving the defences of Fort Carré, Vauban fortified Antibes itself, adding a land front of four arrow-headed bastions around the town, as well as seaward fortifications, including a bastion on the breakwater closing the harbor.
During the French Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte was briefly imprisoned here. In July 1794, after the violent overthrow of Robespierre, General Bonaparte was detained as a Jacobin sympathizer and held in Fort Carré for ten days. His friend and political ally, Antoine Christophe Saliceti, secured his release.

Antibes Harbor - Port Vauban in Antibes, France
Port Vauban is a French yachting harbor located in Antibes on the French Riviera. Originally a natural harbor in use since before the Roman Empire, the port was fortified by Sébastien Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban, later Marquis de Vauban, King Louis XIV's military engineer.
Port Vauban now serves as the home of the Yacht Club d'Antibes and is the largest marina (in terms of total tonnage of the boats and yachts moored there) in the Mediterranean Sea. Some of the world's largest and most lavishly appointed yachts have Port Vauban as their home port, including Russian oil businessman Roman Abramovich's 86 m Ecstasea and his gift to fellow Russian businessman Eugene Shvidler (Le Grand Bleu). Co-founder of Microsoft Paul Allen's yacht Octopus is a regular visitor to the harbor.
In the early part of the 20th century, Port Vauban also accommodated numerous seaplanes and a seaplane manufacturer. As of 2012, typical rates for a berth in Port Vauban are between €1m to €1.4m.

It was an emotional return to my family there and my old High School friends. 20 years...a long time to be away. I still cannot believe that I was stupid enough to let this happen. Here is a view of Port Vauban, probably Europe's trendiest Marina and, in the background, the Fort-Carre'. The port houses some of the most expensive personal Yachts in the world. Everyone who is anyone in this world has a yacht moored here, starting with the King of Kuwait. The area reserved to them is called Le Quai des Milliardaires (The Billionaires' warf). The Fort Carre', where Napoleon was jailed once, was built to defend the city and the port by the famous French war architect Vauban. It appeared in a few movies, most famously as the bad guy's house in the 1984 spin-off James Bond movie NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN starring Sean Connery, Barbara Carrera, Rowan Atkinson (before his Mr. Bean days) and a very young Kim Basinger.
