Fort Mitchel, Hilton Head Island SC
Very well preserved Union Fort in Hilton Head from the Civil War.
Hilton Head Island Named No. 1 Island in the Continental U.S.
Travel+Leisure Magazine named Hilton Head Island the number one Island in the Continental U.S. in this year's World's Best Awards for the third year in a row.
Indigo Run, a private community on Hilton Head Island, SC
Visit or (843) 290-4882 for more community information.
In Indigo Run, you'll generally find smaller neighborhoods, newer homes, contemporary architecture and gorgeous golf and lagoon views... all within a Lowcountry setting.
Our Hilton Head Keller Williams real estate office is at the front gate of Indigo Run. People are always surprised when we drive them through the gate, going from one of the busiest areas on the north end to something that looks very different on the inside. The tree canopy, the wildlife, these low-density neighborhoods leave so much room for green space, bike trails and 2 of the most sought-after golf courses on the island.
Much of Indigo Run still looks as it must have before it was Indigo Run. In the 40's and 50's, they were harvesting timber here. The first roads and the Golden bear neighborhood came in 1984. Yet the first home wasn't constructed until 1992. That was also the year that the Golden bear golf course opened. The golf club came two years later in 1994. In 2001, the indigo run community owners Association took control of the community. Yet that timeline is about 30 years newer than some of the neighboring communities. So a drive through this community tells you a lot about how much they learned from what came before.
So much of our island was built for short-term occupancy -and still is driven by that to a significant extent. It's almost inescapable. But Indigo Run is one of the exceptions. 3 out of 4 Indigo Run residents are here full time.
The Golden Bear has just 537 home sites. Of those 537, 461 are built, 7 more are being built now... And there are just 69 lots remaining.
It's primary and secondary second homes with a range of recreational options available through Club Corp. The most notable has to be the golf.
The Golden Bear has the Jack Nicholas 18 hole championship course. The Golf Club has a private Jack Nicholas and Jack Nicholas II-designed golf facility.
Sunningdale Pool and Tennis Area has a Jr. Olympic swimming pool, sun decks, children's wading pool and shaded playground.
There are six Har-tru clay tennis courts with practice equipment and tennis league competition for men, women and mixed teams.
Another great facet of ownership in Indigo Run is Indigo Hall, located next door to The Golf Club. When not being used by the Women's Club or the Men’s Group, Indigo Hall is available to residents for special events and family get-togethers.
And we have to talk about Hilton Head's #1 amenity: the beach -which is a short ride away. Indigo Run residents can access Islanders Beach Park or any of the town beaches with an annual beach sticker. Indigo Run’s Golden Bear community has 2 gates: the front gate on William Hilton Pkwy and the back gate on Marshland road. That allows for some great conveniences and flexibility. You're close to just about everything on the island, yet still within this impeccably maintained natural environment that feels miles away.
Indigo Run rules and regulations prohibit rentals shorter than six months. Private amenities are subject to membership and usage fees. Please inquire for current rates.

African American Civil War Infantry honored at Fort Howell
On the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln's signing of the 13th amendment, abolishing slavery, some of South Carolina's most heroic Civil War soldiers were honored. A monument commemorating the U.S. 32nd Colored Infantry was unveiled Saturday at Fort Howell — which was built by the 32nd to protect Mitchelville, the first freedmen's village in the South. Josh Mitelman was at the unveiling, which was preceded by a Freedom Walk to the fort.

SUMMARY
=======
The United States presidential election of 1968 was the 46th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 5, 1968. The Republican nominee, former Vice President Richard Nixon, defeated the Democratic nominee, incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Analysts have argued the election of 1968 was a major realigning election as it permanently disrupted the New Deal Coalition that had dominated presidential politics for 36 years.
Incumbent Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson had been the early front-runner for his party's nomination, but he announced his withdrawal from the race after anti-Vietnam War candidate Eugene McCarthy finished second in the New Hampshire primary. McCarthy, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Vice President Humphrey emerged as the three major candidates in the Democratic primaries until Kennedy was assassinated in June 1968. Humphrey won the presidential nomination at the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which saw numerous anti-war protests. Nixon entered the 1968 Republican primaries as the front-runner, and he defeated Nelson Rockefeller, Ronald Reagan, and other candidates at the 1968 Republican National Convention to win his party's nomination. Governor George Wallace of Alabama ran on the American Independent Party ticket, campaigning in favor of racial segregation.
The election year was tumultuous; it was marked by the assassination of Civil Rights Movement leader Martin Luther King Jr., subsequent King assassination riots across the nation, the assassination of Kennedy, and widespread opposition to the Vietnam War across university campuses. Nixon ran on a campaign that promised to restore law and order to the nation's cities and provide new leadership in the Vietnam War. A year later, he would popularize the term silent majority to describe those he viewed as being his target voters. He also pursued a Southern strategy designed to win conservative Southern white voters who had traditionally supported the Democratic Party. Humphrey promised to continue Johnson's War on Poverty and to support the Civil Rights Movement. Humphrey trailed badly in polls taken in late August but narrowed Nixon's lead after Wallace's candidacy collapsed and Johnson suspended bombing in the Vietnam War.
Nixon won a plurality of the popular vote by a narrow margin, but won by a large margin in the Electoral College, carrying most states outside of the Northeast. Wallace won five states in the Deep South and ran well in some ethnic enclave industrial districts in the North; he is the most recent third party candidate to win a state. This was the first presidential election after the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which had led to mass enfranchisement of racial minorities throughout the country, especially in the South. Nixon's victory marked the start of a period of Republican dominance in presidential elections, as Republicans won five of the next six elections.
