- Hi, I'm John Dewberry, developer, preservationist, and welcome to my home here in Charleston, South Carolina. It's a pre-revolutionary home first built in 1770. In about 2003, we decided that we would take the home back to 1770. Most everything was approved by myself before we actually put it in the home. So come on in, and let's take a look.
[CLASSICAL MUSIC]
Right off the foyer to your left, what most people refer to as their living room, we refer to it as our music and art room. We have a Steinway piano that was signed by Van Cliburn. And then we have many art pieces here-- some with color, but many charcoals because I like the minimalist value of those.
When we bought the home, it had actually been a grocery store for over 100 years, and people all over Charleston have these great stories about getting their first beer or stealing candy from Pete's. These were 14 foot floor to ceiling, so we raised the floor two feet here, had to change the windows and bring those up, went and got beveled glass from Germany, and rebuilt all of the fireplaces which was one of the toughest tasks. It gives a real strong nod to the era which this home is from.
In the main dining room, we made it a little bit more casual. This table, you can see, is from Brazil and looks like it's been beat up because it's old. You can be comfortable having pizza on this dining room table, or you can have caviar and champagne. I like a lot of presidents, but one of my favorite presidents is George Washington, and I have this unsigned Gilbert Stuart.
And then, of course, the two hunt boards on both sides of the room are actually both from the Revolutionary era that this home was built, as is this French wallpaper that is from the 1770s as well. The kitchen house was the biggest preservation project of the entire house which was an enormous one in and of itself.
When I purchased the house, there was actually a second floor and in-law suite. I decided I wanted to make this one big enormous volume. If you look around, you'll see the different colors of stucco and brick. We did the same technology that they did back in the 1770s in terms of creating this tabby which is Portland cement and oyster shell.
You also see the hurricane rods. They're not just for show as you'll see in some folk's house, these are actually holding these walls up. We like to use each room in the house, and we certainly get a great deal of use out of the kitchen. We like to sit here and read by the fireplace, have the coffee with the dogs. We also wanted to make the island a place where we could commune, so you can see we have a long row here of eight chairs, or you can head outside to our Meeting Street courtyard and dine al fresco.
Now, we're in the Cypress Room, really probably my personal favorite in the entire house. I spend a lot of time here reading, smoking an occasional cigar. The walls in here are from the pre-revolutionary era. We're not exactly sure how old, but probably 250- to 300-year-old cypress wood.
I elected to peel the paint off of the wall and give it a flecked look. You'll see a lot of juxtaposition in this room of old and new. Of course, the 13-star flag as well as two 18th century leather chairs juxtaposed against a modern sofa, a modern ottoman. We spend most every night here before retiring to the bedroom.
And this is our bedroom. And one of the many influences is from the Caribbean. And so this bed here is from Jamaica, and these two chairs here are campaign chairs from Barbados. In this room, unlike the Cyprus Room, we actually kept the paint intact and went over it with an antique white.
Through the French doors is our bathroom suite. We have a huge tub that I put in the middle of the room so I can lounge in there and open up the French doors and smoke a cigar. I was never formally trained, so I don't know what you're not supposed to do or supposed to do. So when the designers showed me two great 1950s minks chairs, I said, those are going in my bathroom.

Lightning Burns $1.7 Million S.C. Mansion to the Ground — as Another Strike Blocks 911 Calls - News
Human Interest News,News A decades-old South Carolina mansion burned to the ground due to a lightning strike on Sunday as family members tried desperately to reach police for an hour and a half — only to learn that another strike damaged the 911 cell tower, reports say. Keith Guest, his wife, Stephanie, and their two children expected police to arrive after a lightning strike started a fire on the roof of their 89-year-old $1.7 million mansion on Lady’s Island, according to WSAV. He said he put out a smaller fire upstairs in the home, only to see flames coming from the roof. “I kept thinking, ‘Well they’ll show up any minute. They’ll show up, they’ll show up. I know they’ll be here in five minutes,’ ” Guest recalled to WSAV. “Then an hour goes by and I’m thinking, ‘Oh they’ll be here any minute.’ An hour and 15 minutes goes by… we just could not get through to them.” As it turns out, another lightning strike hit the county’s 911 cell tower around the same time, WSAV reported. The shock damaged a router, blocking 911 dispatch calls from Hampton, Jasper and Beaufort counties. Guest and his family watched for more than hour as the nearly 100-year-old home burned to the ground. “Luckily for us, a fireman who was out on his boat … going down the river, and he saw the house was in flames, and he knew the direct number to the fire station,” Guest said. However, by time authorities with the Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire District arrived 10 minutes later, it was too late. “It started collapsing and they had to back away for their own safety,” Guest told WSAV. “There wasn’t anything they could do.” Guest and his wife had done a lot of work on the property, which had been unoccupied for 10 years before they bought it, according to the Island Packet. The couple added a wing and Guest ran his medical practice out of the massive home. “It was an amazing property that you could tell had been well-built and well-loved,” Stephanie told the Packet. “We had been renovating the house constantly for the last eight years.” The home was 7,800 square feet and was built in 1929, according to The Beaufort Gazette. By Monday, the lavish home’s signature white columns were laid out on the lawn, according to the publication. The home was originally the dwelling of Arthur Barnwell, a descendant of Col. John Barnwell, a founder of Beaufort, South Carolina. He made his fortune on the New York Stock Exchange and built the “playhouse” after retiring at 55. Over the years, the home became associated with rumors of Arthur’s many “showgirls.” In the past, the home was the site of headline-making soirees. “The parties would last for weeks,” Pat Branning, who had owned the mansion at one point. “They were lavishly entertained.”
Pickett's Charge
Pickett's Charge was an infantry assault ordered by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee against Maj. Gen. George G. Meade's Union positions on Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863, the last day of the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Its futility was predicted by the charge's commander, Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, and it was arguably an avoidable mistake from which the Southern war effort never fully recovered psychologically. The farthest point reached by the attack has been referred to as the high-water mark of the Confederacy.
The charge is named after Maj. Gen. George Pickett, one of three Confederate generals who led the assault under Longstreet.

North Carolina ( (listen)) is a state in the southeastern region of the United States. It borders South Carolina and Georgia to the south, Tennessee to the west, Virginia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. North Carolina is the 28th most extensive and the 9th most populous of the U.S. states. The state is divided into 100 counties. The capital is Raleigh, which along with Durham and Chapel Hill is home to the largest research park in the United States (Research Triangle Park). The most populous municipality is Charlotte, which is the second largest banking center in the United States after New York City.The state has a wide range of elevations, from sea level on the coast to 6,684 feet (2,037 m) at Mount Mitchell, the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River. The climate of the coastal plains is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. Most of the state falls in the humid subtropical climate zone. More than 300 miles (500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state has a subtropical highland climate.

The Juneteenth Book Festival Symposium on Black Literature & Literacy
A day-long symposium on Juneteenth, one of the oldest observances marking the end of the enslavement of African descendants in the United States. The holiday has been celebrated in Galveston, Texas, since June 19, 1865, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation first was announced in Texas. Today, Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom with an emphasis on education and literacy. The opened with a history of Juneteenth. Three panels followed on The State of Black Literature, The Stakeholders of Black Literacy and Independent Artists: Our Journey as Storytellers of the African Diaspora.
