Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) - Ancient Rome Live
Constantine founded Constantinople on Byzantium, a strategic site for controlling the Bosphorus by the Greeks and as recently as Septimius Severus. This city was Constantine's New Rome with churches, walls, hippodrome and palace, baths and walls spread throughout seven hills, as per Rome. Many other emperors added to the glory of Constantinople, including Valens, Theodosius, Theodosius II, Marcian, and Justinian, who built the definitive version of the Hagia Sophia. The city suffered many setbacks, through it did not fall as early as the western half of the Roman Empire. The Crusader sack of 2014 stands out as a flashpoint of the city's precious state in the medieval period, with the bronze horses and tetrarch statue group noteworthy spoils from wealthy Constantinople still on display in San Marco in Venice.

The Grand Bazaar (Turkish: Kapalıçarşı, meaning ‘Covered Market’; also Büyük Çarşı, meaning ‘Grand Market’[1]) in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 4,000 shops[2][3] which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily.[4] In 2014, it was listed No.1 among world's most-visited tourist attractions with 91,250,000 annual visitors.[5] The Grand Bazar at Istanbul is often regarded as one of the first shopping malls of the world.
The Grand Bazaar is located inside the Walled city of Istanbul, in the district of Fatih and in the neighbourhood (mahalle) bearing the same name (Kapalıçarşı). It stretches roughly from west to east between the mosques of Beyazit and of Nuruosmaniye. The Bazaar can easily be reached from Sultanahmet and Sirkeci by trams (Beyazıt-Kapalıçarşı stop).
The construction of the future Grand Bazaar's core started during the winter of 1455/56, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople and was part of a broader initiative to stimulate economic prosperity in Istanbul. [6]Sultan Mehmet II had an edifice erected devoted to the trading of textiles[1][7] and jewels near his palace in Constantinople.[8] It was named Cevâhir Bedestan (‘Bedesten of Gems’) and was also known as Bezzâzistan-ı Cedîd (‘New Bedesten’) in Ottoman Turkish. The word bedesten is adapted from the Persian word bezestan, derived from bez (cloth), and means bazaar of the cloth sellers.[9] The building – named alternately in Turkish İç (‘Internal’), Atik (‘Ancient’), or Eski (‘Old’) Bedesten – lies on the slope of the third hill of Istanbul, between the ancient Fora of Constantine and of Theodosius. It was also near the first sultan's palace, the Old Palace (Eski Sarayi), which was also in construction in those same years, and not far from the Artopoleia (in Greek) (Άρτοπωλεία), the city's bakers' quarter in Byzantine times.[10]
The construction of the Bedesten ended in the winter of 1460/61, and the building was endowed to the waqf of the Aya Sofya Mosque. Analysis of the brickwork shows that most of the structure originates from the second half of the 15th century, although a Byzantine relief representing a Comnenian eagle, still enclosed on the top of the East Gate (Kuyumcular Kapisi) of the Bedesten has been used by several scholars as proof that the edifice was a Byzantine structure.[1]
In a market near the Bedesten, named in Turkish Esir Pazarı, the slave trade was active, a use also carried over from Byzantine times.[11] Other important markets in the vicinity were the second-hand market (Turkish: Bit Pazarı),[9] the Long Market (Uzun Carsi), corresponding to the Greek Makros Embolos (Μακρός Ὲμβολος, ‘Long Portico’), a long porticoed mall stretching downhill from the Forum of Constantine to the Golden Horn, which was one of the main market areas of the city,[12] while the old book market (Sahaflar Carsisi) was moved from the Bazaar to the present picturesque location near the Beyazid Mosque only after the 1894 Istanbul earthquake.
Some years later[13]—according to other sources,[11] this occurred in 1545 under Sultan Suleyman I—Mehmet II had another covered market built, the ‘Sandal Bedesten’ (the name comes from a kind of thread woven in Bursa, which had the colour of sandalwood[14]), also named Küçük (‘Little’), Cedit or Yeni (both words meaning ‘New’) Bedesten, which lay north of the first.[citation needed]
After the erection of the Sandal Bedesten the trade in textiles moved there, while the Cevahir Bedesten was reserved for the trade in luxury goods. At the beginning the two buildings were isolated. According to the 16th-century French traveller Pierre Gilles, between them and the Mosque of Beyazid stood the ruins of churches and a large cistern;.[11] However, soon many sellers opened their shops between and around them, so that a whole quarter was born, devoted exclusively to commerce.

The Theodosius Cistern (Greek: Κινστέρνα Θεοδοσίου, Turkish: Şerefiye Sarnıcı) is one of many ancient cisterns of Constantinople that lie beneath the city of Istanbul, Turkey. The modern entrance is in Piyer Loti Caddesi, Fatih.
It was built by Roman Emperor Theodosius II between 428 and 443 to store water supplied by the Valens Aqueduct. The Aqueduct of Valens was redistributed by Theodosius from its original supply to the Nymphaeum, the Baths of Zeuxippus and the Great Palace of Constantinople. This redistribution led to the construction of the Theodosius Cistern.
Şerefiye Sarnıçı 924.jpg
The area is about 45 by 25 metres (148 by 82 ft) and the roof is supported by 32 marble columns about 9 metres (30 ft) high.
Like the Basilica Cistern and the Binbirdirek Cistern, it is once again open to the public, having being under restoration for eight years(April 2018)[1].

The Forum of Theodosius (φόρος Θεοδοσίου, also known as Forum Tauri) was built during the reign of Theodosius I (379-395). It was located on the Mese (the main street of Constantinople) west of the Forum of Constantinople and Hagia Sophia. Possibly the largest forum of Constantinople, it had a monumental column crowned with a statue of Theodosius and a triumphal arch.
II. Bayezid Turkish Hamam (Bath) Museum
The Bayezid II Hammam dates back to the 16th century when Sultan Bayezid II commissioned it as part of the complex around the nearby Beyazit Mosque. The Museum displays many items relevant to the Turkish bath, such as copper jugs, water bowls, towels, and bath shoes. Helpful texts in Turkish and English explain the origins and history of Turkish baths in Istanbul, as well as the spread of Turkish baths to Western European cities in the 19th century.

Beylikdüzü has found 8 shipwrecks of 1,500 years on the banks of the Marmara Sea.
It is thought to be an ancient port similar to Theodosius Harbor in Yenikapi district
8 wrecks were found on the Marmara Sea coast of Beylikdüzü, one of the westernmost counties of Istanbul, dating back to 1500 years ago. It is stated that the vessels in Beylikdüzü point to the presence of a historical port, and Yenikapi may be the first step of a reconnaissance similar to the Port of Theodosius, which was proven in 2004 with the wrecks discovered in 2004. The first determinations of the wrecks that fishermen have been paying attention to for years have been made on the 13 km coastline with the contributions of Beylikdüzü Municipality, West İstanbul Marina and Western İstanbul Foundation. Istanbul University, Department of Marine Sciences and Business Administration. Assoc. Dr. The images obtained by Denizhan Vardar and underwater researcher Cumhur Ayar will be compared with the information of ship historian Ahmet Güleryüz.
One can have a steamer
It is believed that the sheet metal that is 8 meters deep from the divers is a city line ferry carrying passengers to Istanbul in the 1900s. Indicating that the parts of the 7-meter deep ship spread over a 100-meter area, We have seen that the other wrecks are wood and that they do not leave much residue. We know that the region has been open to human settlements for 1500 years. We aim to work with expert underwater archaeologists and historians to be dated and brought to the cultural heritage of Istanbul.
'Our grandmothers told us'
Beylikdüzü Fishermen and Environmental Protection Association President Memiş Turc, the area where the wrecks were told about us generations. Our grandfather said that during the June-August storm, captains who had trouble in that area became famous as good sailors. While the ancient ports and sinkholes that took place in our oral history are brought to the world of science, it will also shed light on the history of Istanbul.
On the way to Angurina
Beylikdüzü, 5 years ago on the coast of Ambarlı archaeologists and marine scientists conducted researches BC 4. Ancient researcher Reminiscent of the Ancient Angurina Port dating to the 20th Century is underwater researcher Cumhur Ayar, Angurina was used as the grain warehouse of the Eastern Roman Empire for 500 years or so to the 9th century BC. The wrecks are only 2 km from the lima. We think that the ships that loaded the lima are sinking in the storm. Because there are wrecks very close to the shore and not deep. The trawler's iron nets spread the wrecks around. It is very important to conduct scientific studies without being completely dispersed, he spoke.
Istanbul, the Column of Arcadius
Getting along Cerrah Paşa caddesi from Aksaray and after passing through the imposing mosque of Cerrah Paşa we continue ahead for about 100 meters and take the second turning on the right, Haseki Kadın sokaği. A short distance up the street on the right we find the shapeless remains of the base of the Column of Arcadius, wedged tightly between two wooden houses and as tall as they; its marble surface is rent and pitted by time and fires and it is overgrown with a mantle of ivy.
Erected in 402 AD by the Emperor Arcadius, the column was decorated with spiral bands of sculpture in bas relief representing the triumphs of the emperor, like Trajan's column in Rome. It stood in the center of an imperial forum called after Arcadius. At the top of the column, which was more than 50m high, there was an enormous Corinthian capital surmounted by an equestrian statue of Arcadius, placed there in 421 by his son, Theodosius II. This statue was eventually toppled from the column and destroyed during an earthquake in 704.
The column itself remained standing for another thousand years until it was deliberately demolished in 1715, when it appeared to be in immanent danger of collapsing on the neighbouring houses. Now all that remains are the mutilated base and some fragments of sculpture from the column which are on display in the Archeaological Museum, here in Istanbul.
It is possible to enter the interior of the base through a side door in the house to the left. Once inside the base we can climb up an interior stairway to the top of the ruin, where there is still visible a short length of the column with barely discernable remnants of the sculptured decoration.
[from Strolling through Istanbul, a guide to the city, Hilary Sumner-Boyd, John Freely ISBN 975-413-045-0]
****
That morning (with Naz) aside from finding the way to the column (once you follow the steps of Freely's great book it isn't very complicated), we managed to persuade the owners of a nearby bakery and, in an incredible twist, we jumped onto the roof (at the end of the video you can see one of the workers coming over), making it straight to the column.
Once at the top, with views over Istanbul, one may actually climb down the stairs and get to the base, where the neighbour's door mentioned above can be found. Aside from the experience of finding those forgotten ruins in the old Istanbul quarter of Cerrah Paşa (in Fatih) the area itself is worth the visit!

Polul atractiei Pietei Sultanahmet il constituie Moscheea albastra, rivala in celebritate cu vecina ei Catedrala Sfanta Sofia, devenita astazi muzeu.
