Robert Franklin's Interview
Robert Franklin is the assistant director of the Hanford History Project. In this role, he is the archivist and oral historian for the Department of Energy’s Hanford Collection and Washington State University’s collections on Hanford. He attended Washington State University in Pullman and earned his Master’s degree in history. In graduate school, he took a graduate-level seminar on the Hanford oral history project, which sparked his interest in Hanford and the impacts of the Manhattan Project on the rural, agricultural communities in Washington. In this interview, Franklin discusses the general history of Hanford, displacement of Hanford area residents during the Manhattan Project, and current efforts to preserve the site. He also describes some of the pre-Manhattan Project properties that can be visited today, including the White Bluffs Bank.

Great River (1973)
“Great River” was made in 1963 as a joint effort between the Bureau of Reclamation and BPA. It covers many aspects of getting power and water to the people, including wheeling, distribution, direct-service industries, the Northwest Power Pool and community revitalization as a result of massive irrigation projects. The film was re-released in 1973 with a new introduction by longtime Portland newscaster and news director Ted Bryant and a different ending — BPA excised the last few minutes of the original film, which lamented the lack of flood control in the upper Columbia River. Changes after the implementation of the 1964 Columbia River Treaty with Canada, as well as new attention to environmental issues, likely led to the release of the updated version. Both versions of the film provide an overarching view of the purpose of BPA and the accomplishments of Reclamation. The production offers a fascinating look at the agencies’ partnership.
The digital transfer of the 1973 film was made from a 1990s video master, which retains the true colors of the original. The 1963 version was never transferred to video, and the film print was too degraded to reproduce. However, a few clips of the original are shown in the disc introduction. Vaughn Steele oral history, 2007-09-09
Heavy Bombardment Group during World War II. Attached to the United States 15th Air Force and based in North Africa and later in southern Italy, this bomb group flew 451 missions against Germany and its Axis allies between 12 June 1942 and 15 April 1945. Among the key targets bombed by the 376th Heavy Bombardment were Ploesti, Vienna, Moosierbaum, and the Brenner Pass. Pilots, co-pilots, navigators, bombardiers, flight engineers, gunners, and grounds crewmen of the 376th's four squadrons -- 512th, 513th, 514th, and 515th -- are represented in these interviews. Two additional interviews with Edward Clendenin and Kim Hobbs, both sons of deceased veterans, provide background and context for the oral history collection. The goal of this project was to preserve the memories of the airmen and grounds crewmen for their families, students, scholars, and future generations of Americans.
The interviews were conducted during the annual reunion of the 376th Heavy Bomb Group Veterans Association in September 2007 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and during the annual reunion in September 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Edward Clendenin, Kim Hobbs, Toni Schmidt, Chris Reidy, and David Ulbrich conducted the interviews with the veterans; and Mr. Reidy and Robert Fultz served as videographers. Dr. Ulbrich organized this project through Ball State University with generous financial and administrative support from the 376th HBG Veterans Association and from Ball State's History Department, Military Science Department, University Teleplex, and Archives and Special Collections.
