Sneak Peek Inside Big Spring's Hotel Settles
It's still months away from opening but there is already a ton of hype surrounding Hotel Settles in Big Spring.
The hotel sign just went up earlier this week.
First class service and originality. Those are the goals of the West Texas famous Hotel Settles.
The decades old building is in the middle of a huge facelift, and developers aren't holding back.
This project is well over $26 million already, General Manager Juan Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said the 65-room hotel will be top of the line.
It brings the only full service property in Big Spring, he said. Banquet space, we have a grand ballroom. It's got plenty of meeting space. The rooms are really nice.
Workers are busy restoring some of the hotel's original features and upgrading rooms.
Part of our plaster work that has been done has been recreated to the old way that it used to be and that's what were trying to achieve, Rodriguez said. It's taken a lot of time but it's worthwhile.
Hotel and city officials said Big Spring's location is an advantage.
We are at the crossroads of West Texas so we're hoping more conferences, more workshops will take place at the Hotel Settles, Debbye Valverde, with the Chamber of Commerce, said.
She said they're hoping it will bring more tourists and business to town.
It's also bringing in jobs.
There could be 20 to 60 people working (at any time,) Rodriguez said.
And that's just right now. Once it opens it could have around 50 jobs to fill inside the hotel.
Valverde said the hotel is a historic event for Big Spring natives, herself included.
I've had family members that have worked there as elevator boys at one point, she said.
There's still a lot of work to do but they're hoping to open the hotel on the same day it opened nearly 82 years ago: October 1st, 1930.
Now all we're starting to do is paint, put carpet, we'll be putting furniture in sometime July, Rodriguez said. This property used to be the jewel of West Texas and it will become again the jewel of West Texas.

Fredericksburg Battlefield, VA, US - Part 1
Please visit for full video and more free videos. Fredericksburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia located 50 miles south of Washington, D.C., and 58 miles north of Richmond. It is a part of the Washington Metropolitan Area.
Located on the Rappahannock River near the head of navigation at the fall line, Fredericksburg developed as the frontier of colonial Virginia shifted west out of the coastal plain.
Named for Frederick, Prince of Wales, son of King George II, the colonial town's streets bore the names of members of the royal family.
The city has close associations with George Washington, whose family moved to Ferry Farm in Stafford County just off the Rappahannock opposite Fredericksburg in 1738.
Other significant early residents include the Revolutionary War generals Hugh Mercer and George Weedon, naval war hero John Paul Jones, and future U.S. president James Monroe.
During the American Civil War, Fredericksburg gained strategic importance due to its location midway between Washington and Richmond, the opposing capitals of the Union and the Confederacy.
During the battle of Fredericksburg, December 11 - 15, 1862, the town sustained significant damage due to bombardment and looting at the hands of Union forces.
A second battle was fought in and around the town on May 3, 1863, in connection with the Chancellorsville campaign (April 27, 1863 - May 6, 1863).
The battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House were fought nearby in May 1864.
Today Fredericksburg is the commercial hub of a rapidly growing region in north central Virginia.
The national military park preserves portions of the battlefields of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House. The Fredericksburg National Cemetery, also part of the park, is located on Maryes Heights on the Fredericksburg battlefield and contains more than 15,000 Union burials from the areas battlefields.

Battle of Chancellorsville
The May 1-5, 1863 battle is known as General Robert E. Lees greatest victory.
Battle of Wilderness
The May 5-6, 1864 battle began a six week campaign that began the bloodiest campaign in American history.
Battle of Spotsylvania
On May 8, 1864 the Union army seized initiative by moving from Wilderness to Spotsylvania Court House. That shift changed the course of the war as the armies began the road to Lees surrender at Appomattox Court House.
Chatham Manor is a historic building that served as a headquarters and hospital during the battle.
Driving Tour: There are two sections of the battlefield; Prospect Hill and Marye's Heights. A five-mile driving tour links the two sections beginning at the Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center at the base of Marye's Heights.

2015 Legends: Stinson Municipal Airport
Established in 1915 when the Stinson family initially leased the land from the City of San Antonio, Stinson Municipal Airport is the second oldest general aviation airport in continuous operation in the United States. The terminal building was built between 1935-1936. The building was remodeled and expanded in 2006-2008 but retains much of its original integrity. During WWII the airfield was used by the military as a training base. At the end of the war the airfield was returned to the city for civil use and now serves as the reliever for San Antonio International Airport.

Commerce was named the Bois d'Arc Capital of Texas” (pronounced bow-dark) by the Texas Legislature because of its location in the geographic center of the indigenous range of the bois d'arc tree. The second largest bois d'arc tree in Texas, Big Max, recognized by the National Forests Famous and Historic Trees, is located within the city limits. Held every September, the annual Bois d'Arc Bash pays homage to the native trees which played a vital part in the frontier days, providing foundations, fences and weapons of the Native Americans. The Bash celebrates with arts & crafts vendors, food, parade, kids' game area, pageant, wine, musical entertainment, 5K run, and car & truck show.
