KASTURBA GANDHI NATIONAL MEMORIAL TRUST
The KASTURBA GANDHI NATIONAL MEMORIAL TRUST was established in 1945 as a result of the national endeavour, led by Mahatma Gandhi, to address the issues of women in rural India.
The unique history of the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust is set against the backdrop of the history of India's freedom struggle.
Eminent people from all walks of life as well as the anonymous masses, mobilised their resources to set up this Trust with its headquarters in Kasturbagram (Indore) and 22 state branches all over the country. Smt. Sarojini Naidu, a stalwart of the freedom movement dedicated her time and full energy for the establishment of the Trust.
Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Vallabh Bhai Patel, Shri Thakkar Bapa, dada Saheb Mavlankar, Smt. Prem Leela Thakarasi, Smt. Laxmi N. Menon, Sushree Maniben Patel and Dr. Sushila Nayar have been the Chairpersons of this Trust.
At the beginning of the new century, the role of Kasturba Trust is as powerful and relevant as it was at its inception. The trust has remained true to it's ideals for over 50 years of constructive work among women and children in rural India - in the fields of healthcare, education, literacy vocational training, relief work and employment generation.
Mahatma Gandhi's universal and timeless vision SARVODAYA finds its best practical expression in the Kasturba Trust as SARVODAYA is reawakening of the spirit in harmony with nature and environment for all forms of life. Reconstruction of the social order is also part of SARVODAYA.
Women and children are the backbone of our society. Constructive work among women and children is a primary and essential requirement for the process of nation building as envisaged in SARVODAYA. To continue with this Gandhian vision, Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust needs the full support and involvement of the people.

Aga Khan Palace is a majestic building.[2] The palace is closely linked to the Indian freedom movement as it served as a prison for Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai and Sarojini Naidu. It is also the place where Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died.[2] In 2003, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) declared the place as a monument of national importance.[3]
HistoryEdit
Historically, the palace holds great significance. Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi and his secretary Mahadev Desai were interned in the palace from 9 August 1942 to 6 May 1944, following the launch of Quit India Movement. Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai died during their captivity period in the palace and have their Samadhis located over there. Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi have their memorials located in the same complex, near Mula river.[4] Legend goes that the Sultan built the palace to provide employment to the famine – struck villagers of the surrounding region; so he employed 1000 people, and the palace was constructed in five years. It was built in Rs 12 lakhs. The total area is 13 acres and built up palace covers seven acres, and the rest is a well maintained garden.
In 1969, Aga Khan Palace was donated to the Indian people by Aga Khan IV as a mark of respect to Gandhi and his philosophy.[1] Today the palace houses a memorial on Gandhi where his ashes were kept. The then prime minister Indira Gandhi had visited the place in 1974 where she allotted a sum of ₹200,000 (US$3,000) every year, for its maintenance. The amount rose to ₹1 million (US$15,000) till the 1990s,[5] after which the national monument of India, was neglected for many years due to improper allocation of funds. There was a protest held at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near Pune railway station in July 1999 to protest against the worsening condition of the monument. The present condition has improved very little. While the visitors take a round the palace, the rooms at the backside can be seen filled with old, broken furniture and garbage. There are rooms on first floor too, which are certainly in worst conditions hence kept away locked from visitors. This condition highlights how badly the yearly funds are managed or how corruption can impact to such an otherwise beautiful and important monument.[6]
LocationEdit
Coordinates of the location: 18°33′8″N 73°54′8″E. It is located at about 2 km away from Bund Garden in Yerwada, on Pune-Nagar Road.
SignificanceEdit

The palace captivates the eye of a spectator with its magnificence and picturesque architecture. It took 5 years and an estimated budget of ₹1.2 million (US$18,000) to complete this Palace. The area of the ground floor is 1756 m2, that of the first floor is 1080 m2, whereas the second floor has a construction of 445 m2. The speciality of this structure is its corridor of 2.5 meters around the entire building. Prince Karim Aga Khan donated this palace to Gandhi Smarak Samittee in 1972 and since then Parks and Gardens organisation is maintaining it.
The palace archives a number of photos and portraits depicting glimpses from the life of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation of India, and other personalities of the Indian freedom struggle.[7]
This palace is also the headquarters of the Gandhi National Memorial Society.[8] It also hosts a shop that deals in khaadiand other hand loomed textiles.[9]

GANDHI MEMORIAL, AGA KHAN PALACE, Pune, India, Part 2
Whatever one's personal feelings about Gandhi, and however one might list his personal faults and shortcomings, he was certainly one of the greatest figure of the twentieth century. Many consider his Autobiography to be one of the greatest pieces of literature, not just of the twentieth century, but of all time. That is a fact. The Autobiography was translated into English within the Palace.

The video opens with a front view of a banyan tree on the Memorial grounds. ERROR: I say Gandhi was imprisoned therein for 6 years, it was 2 years that he spent at this detention center. I am showing you the lovely palace grounds as an illustration of one of my usual Vlog themes, the scenic and flora wonder of contemporary India. Still, when Gandhi was in lockdown at the palace, it was a very bad scene. Insects, both flying and crawling, infested the palace interior. Kasturba, his wife, and herself a moving figure in India Independence, died. Her ashes remain interned upon those grounds
