PAC/WCP Program - Creating a Native Woodland Garden by Lisa Wagner, part 1
On September 27th, Lisa Wagner of the South Carolina Botanical Garden presented a program on “Creating a Native Woodland Garden” at the Anne Elizabeth Suratt Nature Center at Walnut Creek Preserve (WCP) to a group of 27 people!
In this video, Lisa describes the process of creating a woodland garden, how to choose the appropriate species for your site, and review some of their characteristics and growth habits.
The plants that grow in our native forest communities provide a wonderful plant palette for creating diverse and beautiful woodland gardens using Eastern North American natives. Spring wildflowers such as bloodroot, foamflower, black cohosh, woodland phlox, and Solomon’s seal are native woodland garden favorites, while characteristic native shrubs and trees in the mid- and upper canopy creates a beautiful supporting framework.
Lisa Wagner served as Director of Education at the South Carolina Botanical Garden, Clemson University for over 20 years. A plant ecologist by background (Ph.D. in Botany, UC Berkeley), she’s also a naturalist, writer, blogger, and educator. She is a frequent host on the gardening call-in shows on YourDay, a production of Clemson Video Productions broadcast on SC-ETV radio. She does landscape consultations to benefit programs at non-profits in the Carolinas, especially gardens! Her award-winning blog Natural Gardening reflects her gardening and nature experiences. She and her husband, Tim Spira, divide their time between Asheville, NC and Clemson, SC, where they’ve restored natural habitat, planted pollinator-friendly gardens, and converted lawns to natives.

This program is made possible, in part, by a grant from Delores Lastinger. Her grant also allowed PAC to purchase equipment to record this program!
PAC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit conservation organization (land trust) founded in 1989 to protect and conserve natural resources with emphasis on the lands and waterways with scenic, ecological, and agricultural significance in the North Pacolet and Green River watersheds (PAC’s mission). PAC works with area landowners to ensure the long-term protection of their property through voluntary conservation easements (agreements) which enable landowners to maintain ownership of their property, preserving precious natural resources (open lands, forests, wildlife habitat, scenic vistas, farmland, stream banks, etc.), and potentially obtain significant federal, state, and local tax benefits. PACs vision is a community living and growing in harmony with our natural resources and or goal is to provide a legacy that will endure and be valued by generations to come. PAC works diligently to provide leadership to encourage conservation and provide education programs emphasizing native species appreciation and responsible land use practices to help -- save the places you love.

Old Mill Park North little Rock(3)
he Old Mill, located at Fairway Ave. & Lakeshore Drive in North Little Rock, is a historic re-creation of an 1880's water-powered grist mill. The mill was seen in the opening scenes of David Selznick's 1937 movie classic Gone With The Wind, and is believed to be the only remaining structure from the film. Admission to The Old Mill is free, and the hours of operation are from sunrise to sunset.
The Old Mill, also known as Pugh's Mill, was built in 1933 by Justin Matthews as a replica of an old-water-powered grist mill. The mill was designed to appear as if it belonged in Arkansas and had been here since the 1800s. It is made largely from tinted concrete work over steel and copper rods made to represent wood, iron or stone, and features sculptures by Mexican artist Senor Dionicio Rodriguez.
The Old Mill was nationally recognized in 1986 by being placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was also presented with the Greater Little Rock Historic Preservation Award by the Quapaw Quarter Association.
The grist mill on the first floor dates back to 1828, and some mill rocks on the second floor came from the plantation of Tom Knoble, the grandfather of Tom Pugh, in whose honor the Mill is dedicated. There are also two original milestones from a road laid out more than 150 years ago by Jefferson Davis. Along this road, the Cherokee and Choctaw Indians traveled from the present town of Dardanelle into the Indian territory, now Oklahoma. In addition three sections of a wrought iron shaft were cut from the stern wheel of a passenger steamboat, which traveled the Arkansas River in the 1800's, are used in the mill.
The park is decorated with sculptures of toadstools, tree stumps, and several ornate bridges. Senor Dionico Rodriguez, a sculptor and artist from Mexico City, was responsible for all the details of each piece of concrete work made to represent wood, iron or stone, as well as the designing of the foot bridges and rustic seats. During the summer of 1991, Rodriguez's work at the Old Mill was renovated by the grandson of the original artist, Carlos Cortes
The Old Mill is often used for many outdoor activities including picnicking, relaxing, and even weddings or photo shoots. It is not unheard of for people to choose the Old Mill as a place to say their nuptials and many schools around North Little Rock have their school photos taken there.
A lake stretches into the Lakewood neighborhood below the Old Mill. The architect for the mill and park was Frank Carmean, the artist was Senor Dionicio Rodriguez, and the builder was the Justin Matthews Company.
The Old Mill Park was originally christened the T. R. Pugh Memorial Mill in honor of Thomas R. Pugh, of Portland, Arkansas, a staunch friend and benefactor of Matthews. The Old Mill was given to the City of North Little Rock as a gift by the former Justin Matthews Company on May 24, 1976. Maintained and landscaped by the Pulaski County Master Gardeners and North Little Rock Parks & Recreation, the park includes a variety of tree species including Eastern Redbud, Black Locust, Post Oak, Northern Red Oak, White Oak, and Shortleaf Pine.

Atwell searches for Headless Brakeman at Gurdon RR
me, Joan telling TRUE story what happened to us at the railroad track in Gurdon, Arkansas close to Crossett. Headless man, GHOST, looking for his head while swinging a lantern? Local folklore says so. Old historians say this is the ghost of William McClain who really did die at this very place in a killing or accident many years ago..
I just know this: It scared the living FIRE out of me and I never wanted to go back until now. Forty years have passed, my newspaper article stirred up some interest locally after the Unsolved Mysteries story plus others on TV. A book was written including this happening at Gurdon in the top 41 scariest stories in the world. Now quite a bit is on internet about what is called an unsolved mystery..
Dad Gum it..I might go back but I won't have Bonnie with me this time. Bonnie Jean was Bonnie Bennett from Spearsville and she married Little Roy Lewis of The Lewis Family from Georgia. You can see her pictures on The Lewis Family site. TheLewisFamilyMusic.com..
Well, what do y'all think? Would you if you lived within 2 hours of the Gurdon light? Forty plus years have passed and I now have grown sons who could take me. And of course we would have a video camera this time. Your comments would sure be welcomed..

THE GURDON LIGHT
One of the best-known phenomena in the state of Arkansas happens in this location. The Gurdon Light has fascinated people for years and baffled experts as to its possible cause. In this section of railroad tracks between Highway 53 and the interchange of Sticky Road and Highway 30, a strange light appears on or near the tracks, which does not seem to have a normal source or cause. It has been said to resemble that of a lantern and it swings from side to side, frequently changing size and colors and disappears only to reappear seconds later..
GHOST of William McClain?.
The most popular legend behind the light involves a murder that took place on these railroad tracks. In December 1931, Louis McBride approached his foreman Will McClain regarding getting more hours. They worked for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad during the Great Depression. At the time, the company was limited on how many days they could allow their employees to work. The argument got heated and McBride hit McClain over the head and knocked him down. He then killed him with either a spike hammer or spike maul. The story goes that the murder took place nearby on this line of tracks and that the light would be spotted for the first time shortly thereafter. The light is believed to be the burning of McClain's lantern as he walks the tracks; some say looking for his severed head..
NATIONAL ATTENTION
The Gurdon Light has attracted the attention of several popular television shows over the years and has been featured on Unsolved Mysteries and Real Scary Stories, as well as been covered in several books on ghosts and hauntings.
