South Carolina: Myrtle Beach
Myrtle Beach is is in the center of a large and continuous 60-mile (97 km) stretch of beach known as The Grand Strand in northeastern South Carolina.
Ranked as the second fastest-growing metropolitan area in the country (per 2018 census estimates), Myrtle Beach is one of the major centers of tourism in South Carolina and the United States because of the city's warm subtropical climate and extensive beaches, attracting an estimated 14 million visitors each year.
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the Long Bay area was inhabited by the native Waccamaw tribe. The Waccamaw used the river for travel and fished along the shore around Little River. Waties Island, the primary barrier island along Long Bay, has evidence of burial and shell mounds, remains of the visiting Waccamaw.
The first European settlers along Long Bay arrived in the late 18th century, attempting to extend the plantation system outward towards the ocean. Records are sparse from this period, with most of the recorded history pieced together from old land grant documents. These settlers were met with mixed results, producing unremarkable quantities of indigo and tobacco, as the coast's soil was sandy and most of the crop yields were of an inferior quality.
Prior to the American Revolution, the area along the future Grand Strand was essentially uninhabited. Several families received land grants along the coast.
Mary Withers' gravestone at Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church speaks to the remoteness of the former Strand: She gave up the pleasures of Society and retired to Long Bay, where she resided a great part of her life devoted to the welfare of her children.
As the American colonies gained independence, the area remained essentially unchanged, and the coast remained barren. George Washington scouted out the Southern states during his term staying a night at Windy Hill (part of present-day North Myrtle Beach).
The Withers family remained one of the few settlers around Myrtle Beach for the next half-century. In 1822, a strong hurricane swept the house of R. F. Withers into the ocean, drowning 18 people inside. The tragedy made the Withers family decide to abandon their plots along the coast. Left unattended, the area began to return to forest.
A post office named Withers was established to serve the site of the old Swash in 1888. The railroad began daily service on May 1, 1900. Employees of the lumber and railroad company would take train flatcars down to the beach area on their free weekends, becoming the first Grand Strand tourists. The railroad terminus was nicknamed New Town, contrasting it with the Old Town, or Conway.
Around the start of the 20th century, Franklin Burroughs envisioned turning New Town into a tourist destination rivaling the Florida and northeastern beaches. Burroughs died in 1897, but his sons completed the railroad's expansion to the beach and opened the Seaside Inn in 1901.
Around 1900, a contest was held to name the area, and Burroughs' wife suggested honoring the locally abundant shrub, the southern wax myrtle (Myrica cerifera). The Withers post office changed its name to Myrtle Beach soon afterward. It incorporated as a town in 1938 and as a city in 1957.
In 1937, Myrtle Beach Municipal Airport was built. In 1940, Kings Highway was finally paved, giving Myrtle Beach its first primary highway. Commercial flights began in 1976. In 2010 plans to build a new terminal were approved.
The Gay Dolphin Gift Cove on the Boardwalk was built in 1946, and sells seashells and Myrtle Beach souvenirs. It claims to be the nation's largest gift shop.

North Myrtle Beach is a city in South Carolina. It’s part of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile string of Atlantic beaches. Downtown, Main Street is lined with shops, eateries and bars. Alligator Adventure is an animal park featuring swamps with reptiles, plus live shows. By the ocean, O.D. Pavilion Amusement Park offers fairground rides and traditional snacks. Nearby McLean Park has a lake and picnic shelters.
Prior to incorporation in 1968 North Myrtle Beach consisted of the individual towns of Cherry Grove Beach, Ocean Drive Beach, Crescent Beach, and Windy Hill Beach. It is part of the Grand Strand, and usually advertised along with Myrtle Beach on the whole. Once there however, you'll see that it has a distinctly separate personality of its own. More laid back than it's big sister you'll find that it is a close knit community with lots of community involvement, pride and spirit. There is more of a true family atmosphere and a less transient feel in the area.
Closer to the North Carolina border, commercial and residential development is not quite as advanced yet as Myrtle Beach proper since the city tries to balance that growth with quality of life for their residents. As desirable available waterfront property is rapidly disappearing however, North Myrtle Beach is also taking advantage of the current real estate market and adding marinas on the Intracoastal Waterway along with upscale housing and resort accommodations to keep up with demand.
The major area airport is Myrtle Beach International (MYR). Located about 15 miles south of the North Myrtle Beach border and east of Bypass Hwy. 17, it is served by the following airlines: Delta, Continental, Northwest, Spirit, and U.S. Air. Direct flights may be difficult to find depending on the season, but flying to a major hub such as Atlanta then taking a short hop to the area should not be a problem.
Travel around North Myrtle Beach is best done with your own or a rented vehicle. Although taxi service is available, it can be a bit expensive. Yellow Cab of North Myrtle Beach (843-420-1200) operates in the area. Livery service is also available for hire. Be sure to call ahead with your itinerary for reservations, especially when making travel arrangements for a large group.
Besides the obvious choices of visiting the beach or playing golf, there are plenty of ways to enjoy your visit to North Myrtle Beach. Summer visitors enjoy watersports ranging from deep sea or sport fishing on Capt. Juel's Charters or the Hurricane Fleet out of Little River Inlet, or jet ski rentals, parasailing, and banana boat rides through Bob's Watersports in Cherry Grove or MB Watersports in Little River. Year round from the Little River Inlet you can test your luck on casino cruises by the Southern Elegance fleet, although most prefer the SunCruz Casino. Along the Intracoastal Waterway you can take scenic or dinner cruises on the Barefoot Princess. Family activities in the area include mini-golf venues, the arcade in the Crescent Shores section at Ocean Drive Pavilion, and a visit to Alligator Adventure. There's plenty of shopping in the area, from outlet malls to art galleries and antiquing. Live theatre includes shows at the Alabama Theatre, the House of Blues, and Tribute! right on Main Street. Horseback riding is available in the Cherry Grove section at Inlet Point Plantation Stables. If you don't mind a short ride over the border to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, then don't miss the chance to visit the Ingram Planetarium. Motorcycle enthusiasts will enjoy Bike Week each May and October in addition to the Atlantic Beach Bikefest over Memorial Day Weekend.
