MSC Meraviglia Europe Cruise: Genoa
We're in #Genoa today on our wonderful MSC Meraviglia Mediterranean Cruise. We've made absolutely no plans. How’s that going to work out?

We are up bright and early as we cruise into Genoa, but we don't have an excursion booked. We are going to hang out on the ship, have a nice leisurely breakfast in the #YachtClub, and enjoy the view. Later in the morning I'll head down to the MSC Aurea Spa and give you a quick look around. After the spa visit, we head off the ship and explore the port a little. Before long we run into a friendly young lady that helps us decide what we want to do. A hop on hop off (HOHO) bus tour seems to be our best choice for the day, and we board the bus, cameras ever ready. It's a great tour around the city, and fits nicely with our collective energy levels. Back on the ship we've got more mom and son fun in store. We hit the waterpark, and get crazy on the slides. It's our last full day on the ship, and our last chance to experience the Himalayan Rope Course. Jr. Editor was the only one wearing proper shoes, so we let him hit the ropes without us. Of course, we took lots of photos and videos. It was super fun for him, and he had a great time testing his skills. We round out the night with the Cirque du Soleil dinner show. Spoiler, it was fantastic. Filming the performing is not allowed, so sadly we are not able to share any footage with you.
Thank you for coming along on this fantastic journey aboard the MSC #Meraviglia. If you missed any of the previous vlogs be sure to check those videos out here:
DISCLOSURE: We were guests of MSC on this sailing, however our opinions are our own, and we were not paid or compensated in any other way by MSC during this voyage.

Genoa Walking to Piazza Ferrari Christmas Market Genoa Cathedral
After a wonderful lunch at Restaurant Yuan ( we took a walk.
Using my google maps, I headed towards the direction of Piazza de Ferrari. It was no more than a 5 minute walk and I got myself to the Piazza de Ferrari. There, you see the famous fountain. Here is a slow-motion video of the fountain water -
After taking some photos of the piazza, I headed towards Piazza San Lorenzo, where the Genoa Cathedral is. Along the way, we passed a nice Christmas market.
We kept walking beyond the Cathedral (it was downhill) and ended up near the water. We could see the aquarium. Took a taxi back to the hotel from there.

We sail on the MSC Meraviglia, the flagship of the MSC fleet! When launched in July 2017, the MSC Merviglia (at 172,000 GT) was the fourth largest cruise ship in the world, only behind the 3 Oasis-class vessels owned by Royal Caribbean). Meraviglia, in Italain, connotes a feeling of wonder, astonishment and amazement. The ship has Galleria Meraviglia, a 300ft central promenande filled with boutiques, restaurants, and also used for entertainment. It comes with a 5,200 sq feet LED dome - an atmospheric digital sky that animates the Galleria Meraviglia with inspiring sunrises, sunsets, mosiacs, shows and starry night skies. On this 7N cruise out of Genoa, we sailed in the Yacht Club Royal Suite 15008. A truly luxurious experience!

Ascensore Montegalletto Funicular Railway. Unique Underground Narrow Gauge Railway. Genoa Tourism.
Ascensore Montegalletto Funicular Railway. Transformer Design. Probably the most unique form of Underground Railway transport in the world !
This is a Underground Narrow Gauge Railway that Transforms into a Lift/Elevator. Although the ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto is called a Funicular railway the attraction is there for anyone that enjoys the experience of riding something a little bit different. Genoa in Italy has a handful of Funiculars that transport passengers to the top of the mountain. They are all different and they are all an interesting ride !
The ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto underground railway runs directly into the heart of the mountain for 236 metres, transforms, and then goes vertical 69 metrers up to street level just outside the Castello d'Albertis. The engineering is very interesting and it must have been very brave of the design team to propose such a challenging design. Well Done ! ! !
Certainly a minor tourist attraction for Genoa Tourism, as also, the views are magnificent from the grounds of the castle.

City of migrants - Via Genoa
Genoa is a haven city in Italy. In Genoa, tens of thousands of african migrants arrive, and the city and its inhabitants are overwhelmed by this flood of men. Administratively, the migrants are stuck in Genoa, and the locals have to live with the migrants, the ciminality, and the shift in Genoa's culture, highly visible in the emblematic street Via di Pré.
In the first episode of the VPRO travel series Via Genoa, Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer leads us through the Italian port city of Genoa. He speaks with residents about their changing city, and is looking for stories about migration.
In this first episode Ilja identifies the problems: in the neighborhood, many unemployed African migrants live, and many migrants do not have a residence permit. To have a residence permit they need an employment contract. But there are no jobs for migrants. For this reason, via di Prè became a criminal street, where you avoid eye contact and keep on walking. Even locals do not want to go on Via di Pré anymore.
The new police boss, Sergia Bracco, increased the number of patrols in central Genoa. The reason for this was the neighborhood residents and shopkeepers complaining, the terrorist attacks in other European cities and the various fake bombings in the city. Regular military and police patrols roam the city.
Every day, new Africans arrive in Genoa looking for work that doesn't seem to be real. At present, these are mostly young men from West Africa. In Lampedusa and the reception centers in Sicily they are divided among the Italian municipalities. Genoa currently has over 3000 registered asylum seekers. In the last month of December, tens of thousands came up daily. During the winter season, there are fewer arrivals on the southern Italian coasts, but the prospects are that 2017 will be another record year.
This shows how Italy has changed on the wings of migration over recent decades. Italians traded their salami, cheeses and vegetables and fruits for Senegalese seafood restaurants, Nigerian barbers and Moroccan kebab stores. During the nightly hours, the Italians in this part of the city can be counted on one hand.
In this VPRO travel series Via Genoa, writer Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer speaks with the colorful inhabitants of his hometown, the Italian port city of Genoa. Pfeiffer shows how Italy changes politically, socially and economically with all the newcomers.

Last Stop in Genoa
I’m always thinking about how Europe looks so pretty in people's photo collections, video clips, and even in their memories. But I like the gritty and candid dimensions of Europe that are simply unpolished reality, too. Here’s an impromptu clip of me sharing my last, lousy lunch in Italy while changing trains in Genoa. Two minutes later, I was on my way to France.
At you'll find money-saving travel tips, small-group tours, guidebooks, TV shows, radio programs, podcasts, and more on Italy.
Italy's Riviera: Cinque Terre
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Exploring Italy’s most remote and romantic stretch of Riviera, we visit five tiny port towns: dramatic Vernazza, surrounded by vineyards; reclusive Corniglia, high on its bluff; pastel Manarola; hardscrabble Riomaggiore; and the pint-sized resort of Monterosso. Fishing for anchovies, sipping wine out of rustic barrels, and savoring twinkling Mediterranean vistas, we enjoy the ultimate Riviera adventure. | © 2014 Rick Steves' Europe

MSC Meraviglia In Genoa Cruise Port Italy 2017
An overcast day. MSC Meraviglia docked in the port of Genoa. This is the year 2017. The MSC Meraviglia is the newest ship in the MSC fleet.
MSC Meraviglia is a cruise ship owned and operated by MSC Cruises, built at its Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in St. Nazaire, France, by STX France. Meraviglia is the lead ship of MSC's new Vista Project vessels, with the MSC Bellissima planned to follow in 2019, each of which will have a passenger capacity of 4,500. When it debuted in June 2017, it was the 4th largest cruise ship in the world, behind Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships.
The MSC Meraviglia is now not the newest ship in the MSC Fleet. That accolade belongs to the new MSC Seaside, launched in Dec 2017.
Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi ... (UNESCO/NHK)
The Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli in Genoa's historic centre date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries when the Republic of Genoa was at the height of its financial and seafaring power.
