Hiking the Glen Onoko Falls trail, Jim Thorpe PA
Glen Onoko Falls Trail (Jim Thorpe, PA)
In the beginning of fall we checked out the Glen Onoko Falls Trail, just outside of Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.
This trail has a rocky ascent alongside a nice clear stream. Getting closer towards the falls the trail involves some scrambling and could be dangerous in any kind of wet weather.

Jim Thorpe and Glen Onoko Falls
Jim Thorpe was founded as Mauch Chunk, a name derived from the term Mawsch Unk (Bear Place) in the language of the native Munsee-Lenape. Mauch Chunk was the location of one of the trials of the Molly Maguires in 1876, which resulted in the hanging of four men found guilty of murder. Following the 1953 death of renowned athlete and Olympic medal winner Jim Thorpe, Thorpe's widow and third wife, Patricia, was angry when the government of Oklahoma would not erect a memorial to honor him. When she heard that the boroughs of Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk were desperately seeking to attract business, she made a deal with civic officials. The boroughs merged, renamed the new municipality in Jim Thorpe's honor, obtained the athlete's remains from his wife and erected a monument to the Oklahoma native, who began his sports career 100 miles southwest, as a student at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The monument site contains his tomb, two statues of him in athletic poses, and historical markers describing his life story. The grave rests on mounds of soil from Thorpe's native Oklahoma and from the Stockholm Olympic Stadium in which he won his Olympic medals.
Glen Onoko is the southern access point to Lehigh Gorge State Park. The park provides visitors with multiple recreation opportunities including hiking, biking, hunting, fishing and class II and class III rapids for whitewater rafting or kayaking along the Lehigh River. Glen Onoko Run Trail is a 2 mile trail topping out at the beautiful Glen Onoko Falls. The Glen Onoko Run Trail is a moderate hike following multiple smaller waterfalls and cascades through the trees and rhododendron, eventually approaching the impressive Glen Onoko Fall, the largest of the waterfalls. The hike displays breathtaking views of multiple waterfalls and the rustic Lehigh Gorge, characterized by steep walls, with thick vegetation, rock outcroppings and waterfalls.
Hiking Glen Onoko Falls In Jim Thorpe Pa
Decided to get out and vlog a bit while hiking the Glen Onoko Falls in Jim Thorpe Pa. Been getting a lot of rain in the northeast and finally got a sunny day to get outside.
This steep, yet beautiful hike passes by three waterfalls rich in Native American folklore on its way along Glen Onoko Run. Perfect as a day hike accompanied by a visit to nearby Jim Thorpe for shopping or a meal.
Park at the lot and head down below the bridge that you drove across to get in. Take a right under the bridge and follow the Glen Onoko Trail upstream. The trail gets progressively harder as it passes next to the stream and up over eroded embankments. After the third waterfall, there should be a little fire pit. There is also a nice view, but the main attractions are the waterfalls.
You can either follow the switchback down or backtrack down past the waterfalls. Going down by the waterfalls can get dangerous, however.
This trail is not to be taken lightly, but as long as you are careful there should not be too much to worry about. The trail is steep and a few people have even been taken out on stretchers

in this video of the Glen Onoko Falls you will understand what to expect as you hike the trail. there is so many beautiful waterfalls on this trail that I wanted to give you a glimpse of what you will see and the best places to get completely drenched by them!! also what trail is best to take up and down.
For hiking this trail be sure to hike up the orange blazed path (falls straight up) then take the red blazes down a nice gentle path that loops back to the start.
Be sure to climb to the top its worth it and its fun. expect to take about 1.5 hours if you wanna go fast or if you wanna take your time and have fun put aside a good 4 hours because it will be worth it. I brought food because I cant go more than 2 hours without eating had a nice spot on a rock to eat along the trail.
This is a fun trail but as always be very careful we came across a hognose snake almost stepped on it!!
Hope you have as much fun as we did!!

Glen Onoko Falls/Broad Mountain - Lehigh Gorge State Park and SGL 141, PA
Opps I just did some research and found out Pennsylvania recently outlawed drones in all but six state parks and this one is not on the list and there are limited areas within those state parks. As to help spread the word and fly safe I have listed the drone friendly Pa. State Parks and a link to official parks website. Happy flying. The bureau permits drone and other UAS use at six designated flying sites within the following state parks.
Beltzville State Park
Benjamin Rush State Park
Hillman State Park
Lackawanna State Park
Prompton State Park
Tuscarora State Park
Drone and UAS operators need to contact the park office of the flying site that they plan to visit to ensure compliance with all rules and regulations. Please be advised that the entire park at each of these locations is not open to UAS or drone usage. Only the designated flying site within each park is open to UAS use.
The use of drones or other UAS is restricted at all other Bureau of State park locations.

Amazing view from Glen Onoko Falls (Jim Thorpe, PA)
this video was taken from top of Chameleon Falls (part of Glen Onoko Falls) inside the Lehigh Valley State Park.
It was taken during Fall season and hence the stream was not strong. The surface was very slippery and potentially dangerous specially during those times of the year when the stream is strong. Extreme care is advised.
It is a beautiful place away from crowd and many parts of trail can still be called virgin.
