What a unique experience in Korea!
We stayed at a templestay in Korea that offers sunmudo classes-- a Buddhist martial art that combines yoga, meditation, and combat.
The vegetarian meals at the templestay were clean, healthy, and delicious.
We also experienced a Buddhist eating tradition where we ate in silence and left nothing in our bowls, not even a tiny particle of rice. This practice was meant for us to eat mindfully, appreciating where our food came from and who prepared it, and just to experience taste like never before!
Aside from these unique experiences, we also did a lot of meditations and learned a lot about Korean Buddhism. We left feeling so ZEN.

Zen Martial Art at Golgulsa Temple in Gyeongju, South Korea
Golgulsa temple in Gyeongju has been preserving Korean ZEN martial art, they are performing everyday except on Mondays at 3 PM.
They say that performance size is bigger on weekends, please come and enjoy the Korean Zen Martial Art performance

The S.O.S _ Happy Tample Stay in Girim-sa Temple in Mt.Hamweol, Gyeongju
The bus team was the last team of the game, so they went to Girim-sa to experience Tample-stay. The train team and the airplane team started a game for choose a place to sleep. For this game, the train team had to sleep in a tent and the airplane team could sleep in Hwangnamgwan, the hanok-hotel.

게임에서 꼴찌를 한 버스팀은 기림사에서 템플스테이를 하게 된다. 기차팀과 비행기팀은 잠자리 복불복을 위한 게임을 시작한다. 잠자리 복불복으로 인해 기차팀은 텐트에서, 비행기팀은 황남관 한옥 호텔에서 자게 된다.

◆ Team Masters' Itinerary
Team Masters is off to Gyeongju's hot spots by searching through SNS postings.
Its first stop is Bulguksa Temple, which represents the Korean Buddhism and is designated as world cultural heritage by UNESCO. The team enjoysthe flavor of an ancient temple with a thousand years of history.
Afterwards, the team pays a visit to Donggungwon, a reproduction of Donggung and Wolji, the first zoo and botanical garden of Korea, and meets a variety of animals.
Meanwhile, Team Masters learned about Hwangnidangil Road, rising as a hot spot of Gyeongju on SNS postings. The team looks around eclectic shops located in hanbok buildings from the 70's and the 80's and soaks in Hwangnidan's unique vibe.
The last stop is a popular restaurant at Hwangnidangil Road! The team gets to enjoy exotic pizzas at a hanok pizza joint, feeling a hanok's ambiance.
◆ Team Rookies' Itinerary
Team Rookies is off to Gyeongju based on a travel guide map.
The team visits Cheomseongdae, Gyeongju's landmark and Korea's treasure with a thousand years of history.
The team learns about a story behind Cheomseongdae, and enjoys magnificent pink waves at the pink muhly field, a hot spot at Cheomgseongdae.
Afterwards, Team Rookies goes to Golgulsa Temple, the home of seonmudo. It falls in love with the unique charms of Golgulsa Temple, the first Korean manmade temple in a grotto, and learns seonmudo, martial arts for monks.
The team is then off to Gyochon Village based on the travel guide map, where it can feel the Korean traditions. The team meets donggyeongi, a breed of dog indigenous to Gyeongju and a Korean National Monument, and learns about its origin.
Afterwards, it fully savors the night view at Donggung and Wolji, which are famous for beautiful night view of the historical Gyeongju! Lastly, the team tastes gondalbi (narrow-head ragwort) bibimbapand yukbuchon yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), all madewith gondalbi, Gyeongju's local ingredient,to wrap up the trip.
◆ 마스터즈팀의 여행은?

첨성대가 품고 있는 이야기를 알아보고 떠오르는 첨성대의 핫스팟, 핑크뮬리밭에서 아름다운 핑크빛 물결의 향연을 느껴본다.
그 후, 선무도의 본향, 골굴사를 찾은 루키즈팀. 국내 최초의 인공 석굴사원 골굴사에서 이색 사찰의 매력에 빠져보고 스님들의 무예, 선무도를 배워보는 시간을 가진다.
관광안내지도를 통해 한국의 전통을 느낄 수 있는 교촌마을로 향한 루키즈팀. 교촌마을에서 한국의 천연기념물, 경주개 동경이를 만나 그 유래를 알아본다.

Southkorea (Golgulsa-Temple, Seoul, Busan, Andong)
Südkorea im Oktober 2010 von Seoul an die Grenze zu Nordkorea, dann durch das Land und verschiedene Nationalparks bis in den Süden nach Busan. Golgulsa (literally Stone Buddha Temple) is located 20 km east of the ancient Silla Dynasty capital city of Gyeongju in Southeastern Korea. In the Golgulsa temple area can be found the oldest historical Buddhist ruins on Mt. Hamwol and the only cave temple in Korea.
The original temple was built out of solid rock during the 6th century by Saint Kwang Yoo and his companions, Buddhist monks from India. This temple contains a sculptured Maya Tathagata Buddha (Buddha was known as the Tathagata; his mother was Maya Devi) and twelve rock caves. he formal name of Sunmudo is Bulgyo Geumgang Yeong Gwon. It is a training method taught at Golgulsa Temple designed to extinguish worldly pains and attain enlightenment. The goal of this training is harmonization of mind and body united with breathing.
Golgulsa temple has run Sunmudo training programs since 1992 for those who would like to experience the traditions of Korean Seon (Zen) Buddhism including Sonmudo.
Seoul (Korean pronunciation: [sʌ.ul] ( listen)), officially the Seoul Special City, is the capital and largest city of South Korea. A megacity with a population of over 10 million, it is one of the largest cities in the world.[5] The Seoul National Capital Area is the world's second largest metropolitan area with over 24.5 million inhabitants, which includes the Incheon metropolis and most of Gyeonggi province.[6] Almost half of South Korea's population live in the Seoul National Capital Area, and nearly a quarter in Seoul itself, making it the country's foremost economic, political, and cultural center.
Seoul has been a major settlement for over 2,000 years, with its foundation dating back to 18 B.C. when Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, established its capital in what is now south-east Seoul. It continued as the capital of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. Settlement began in Baekje, Wirye-seong, in 17 BC. The location of that site is thought to be within the boundaries of modern day Seoul, and the remains may be at Pungnap Toseong or Mongchon Toseong. It became the capital of the Joseon Dynasty in 1394. In the Japanese colonization period in the early 20th century, during which time the city was called Gyeongseong (경성, lit. Capital City; Japanese: Keijō (京城?)). After independence from Japan in 1945, Koreans renamed the city Seoul. In 1949, Seoul was separated from Gyeonggi Province and was granted status as Seoul Special City. In 1950, during the Korean War, Seoul was occupied by North Korean troops and the city was almost entirely destroyed. The city was retaken by UN Forces on March 14, 1951. Since then, the city boundary has steadily grown into surrounding administrative divisions of Gimpo, Goyang, and Shiheung counties. The current boundaries were established in 1995.

We stayed in a TEMPLE | Gyeongju || South Korea
Bee house was the best place we stayed in korea highly recommend really comfortable nice rooms good location we also had lockers to use in the day before we could check in ... great place!
Getting around Gyeongju was fine we mainly walked and got one bus to the templestay (there was loads of info about this sent to us from the templestay organisers/on their website) also getting busses to other cities is super easy, cheap and very comfortable! Also, note the train station is 20 mins outside the town if you are getting it from another city like Busan so I would recommend getting the bus, personally.
Woljeonggyo Bridge is totally worth a look its very nice and soooo long!
Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond is nice but I'm kind of sad I didn't see it at night .. you weren't allowed to go in and come back later in the day and I wasn't paying twice so maybe the best time to go is sunset so you can hang around and see both!
Daereungwon Royal Tomb is a nice little garden to wander around with random tombs too! I think its worth it!
Templestay - its pretty good but you have to stay in separate gender rooms so if you are a two-gender couple you will be split up I think that would've made it better for me if I didn't have to share a room with a random and I shared with my bf ... but it was only one night and was a very interesting experience. You do have to get up at 5am though! Also I wouldn't stay more than one night if you're just going for the experience its pretty samey even by lunchtime the next day! You can also do it at a range of temples just most don't seem to do the interesting stuff like archery or sunmundo we stayed at golgulsa. Heres the general website if you want to check it out

Sunmudo (선무도) is a Korean meditative martial art. It's kind of like a combination of dance, yoga, and Tae Kwon Do. Traditionally, it has been practiced by Korean monks for many hundreds of years. Throughout Korean history, the temple monks were a fighting force all their own, whom the king could call upon in times of need. Sunmudo was only made open to the public in the 1980's.
This demonstration took place at Golgulsa Temple, outside the city of Gyeongju, South Korea, on July 21st, 2013. The performers you see are Korean monks along with their most advanced trainees. If you do a templestay in Golgulsa, you can see performances like this and even do some Sunmudo training yourself.

Our Golgulsa (골굴사) Temple Stay
Nicole and I did a temple stay at Golgulsa Temple (골굴사 ), which is located just outside of South Koreas old capital city, Gyeongju (경주시). Golgulsa Temple is located at the bottom of Mt. Hamwol and was built in the Silla dynasty. This means that the temple is over 1000 years old. It is the only cave temple found in Korea, and has a beautiful carving in the mountain of Maya Tathagata Buddha.
One of the main reasons why we chose to do our temple stay at this temple was the fact that Sunmudo (선무도) is practiced here. Sunmudo is a meditative martial art that has been practiced for centuries in Korea.
Our temple stay included two Sunmudo demonstrations, a Sunmudo training session, an early morning chanting service, a sitting meditation, a walking mediation, a Buddhist ceremonial breakfast and tea with the head monk.
We would definitely recommend this experience to anyone that has the opportunity to do it.
