EXPO – Magic of the White City (Narrated by Gene Wilder)
Narrated by Gene Wilder, EXPO – Magic of the White City brings the Chicago World’s Fair to life. Experience the world of 1893 through a cinematic visit to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.
Subscribe for more great documentaries!
Nearly 28 million people visited the Fair. Dubbed the “White City,” it inspired future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright, unveiled the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jack®, and, in many ways, marked the beginning of the 20th century. Many of the era’s greatest achievements in science, technology and culture were unveiled there. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his design of New York City’s Central Park, and constructed under the supervision of Daniel Burnham.
The Fair was an engineering marvel. On opening day, President Grover Cleveland depressed a golden telegraph key which sent the first courses of electricity throughout the Fair powering fountains, machines, electric railways and thousands of lights. It was the first use of electricity on such a massive scale.
In addition, fairgoers enjoyed the Midway Plaisance where a one-mile boulevard of fun offered camel riding and guilty pleasures such as belly dancing, street fighting and beer drinking. Against the backdrop of 1893’s troubles with workers’ rights, prejudice, discrimination and corruption, the World’s Columbian Exposition cast a brief ray of hope for the future of humanity.
Filmed in spectacular High-Definition, EXPO – Magic of the White City immerses viewers in one of the world’s biggest extravaganzas and one of the most unforgettable events in American history. There will never be another event like it… or will there?
Smuggling Drugs
Legalizing drugs has long been a rallying cry on the left, and not without good reason. Progressives remain deeply concerned about the large numbers of low-income males – especially African-American males – who lose their prime years to prison for what seems like the harmless crime of possessing drugs. Legalizing drugs, therefore, seems a sensible way to decriminalize the activities of low-income young African-American men who might feel that the drug economy is the only economy available. Proponents also argue that legalizing drugs would reduce drug-related violence and protect drug users from tainted drugs (on the assumption that the government would sell cleaner, purer drugs).
With Colorado and Washington state leading the momentum toward legalizing marijuana (including news this week of Colorado’s expected large influx of business tax dollars from marijuana sellers), and given the growing number of municipalities embracing medical marijuana (surely, a humane response to chemotherapy patients and others in tremendous pain) the movement to legalize drugs for recreational use is gaining significant steam. In recent days, we’ve even seen calls for legalization from former Rep. Barney Frank and the pages of the Washington Post.
Nevertheless, legalizing drugs is not the answer – even for the left. Here’s why: Drugs kill. They turn talented, intelligent people into impulsive animals. They destroy marriages. They deprive children of emotionally healthy parents. There’s a good reason drugs are illegal: They’re dangerous. Products that kill do not belong on drugstore shelves.
[See a collection of political cartoons on pot legalization.]
Does the name Lenny Bias ring a bell? Boston sports fans will never forget his name. Professional basketball’s number two draft pick in 1986, and the star son of the Maryland Terrapins, Bias was quickly scooped up by the Boston Celtics, bringing hope and excitement to Celtics fans. Bias was thrilled. So thrilled he celebrated that very night by trying cocaine for the first time ever. And that cocaine killed him.
More recently, America suffered the loss of a tremendously gifted actor, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who died of a heroin overdose. Heroin kills. It’s as simple as that. Medical experts say that heroin changes the brain’s chemistry, making addicts out of people who were curious to try it one time.
Why would we wish addiction, misery and death on more Americans by making it legal and easier to access? Moreover, why would we eliminate the deterrent effect that criminality now imposes on the general public? If drugs were as legal as alcohol, a lot more people would try them. Do we really want to see legions of Americans die because they’re curious to try a new high?
Progressives should oppose drug legalization because the people most likely to be killed, the families most likely to be torn apart, the futures most likely to be destroyed are the very people progressives work hardest to help – the downtrodden, with lower incomes (who, according to government data, are significantly more likely to use drugs). Progressives believe the American dream should be available to everyone, regardless of skin color or nationality. We believe opportunity should not be curtailed because a child has the bad luck to be born on the wrong side of the tracks. But addiction can rob a struggling family of its shot at the American dream faster than a sudden-onset recession; the death and destruction that drugs bring can destroy a kid's future more powerfully than the lack of strong schools.
Even the least damaging drugs – like marijuana – still kill brain cells and even shrink parts of the brain with prolonged use. Proponents argue that marijuana is no worse than tobacco, which is available on drugstore shelves (although no longer on the shelves at CVS, thanks to CVS’ bold decision to put public health above profit and to focus more seriously on its health care delivery). While tobacco is addictive and causes many health problems (draining public health resources), cigarettes don’t shrink parts of the brain. Why would we want a generation of teenagers to have smaller brains with fewer brain cells from smoking marijuana?
[See a collection of political cartoons on the economy.]
America’s next generation must be smarter than ever to compete in the global economy against the kids from Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo, who consistently outscore Americans on international academic tests. How do we expect American kids born in poor neighborhoods to compete on the global stage if they’re stoned?
Certainly, drugs can destroy families of any wealth level, and addiction does not discriminate, but the people most vulnerable to drugs’ power tend to be those who are the most hopeless, and hopelessness comes in large doses in lower-income communities. While depression can hit any income level, there are a lot more reasons to be depressed if you live in bleak poverty.

A little about Long Beach, California from Wikipedia below.
Long Beach is a city in Los Angeles County in Southern California, on the Pacific coast of the United States. The city is the 36th-largest city in the United States and the seventh-largest in California. As of 2010, its population was 462,257.[14] In addition, Long Beach is the second largest city in the Greater Los Angeles Area (after Los Angeles) and a principal city of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
The Port of Long Beach is the United States' second busiest container port and one of the world's largest shipping ports.[15] The city also maintains a large oil industry with wells located both underground and offshore. Manufacturing sectors include those in aircraft, car parts, electronic and audiovisual equipment, and home furnishings.
Downtown Long Beach is located approximately 22 miles (35 km) south of Downtown Los Angeles, though the two cities border each other for several miles on Long Beach's southwestern portion. Long Beach borders Orange County on its southeast edge.

Here’s what it’s like inside St. Louis' Gateway Arch
We took a trip to St. Louis’ Gateway Arch — the tallest man-made monument in the US. The arch is 630 feet high and its foundations are about 60 feet deep. It's made of 142 stainless steel sections, concrete, and structural steel.
The monument honors Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase and St. Louis' role in westward expansion of the US.
It's often called the gateway to the west.

Helicopters Over Burbank, CA
Video confirmation of the helicopter patrols that have been intensifying over Burbank, California the last few weeks. At first, I noticed a southeast/northwest patrol that passed over every hour, or so. However, the last few days, there have been helicopters criss-crossing the sky over Burbank every few minutes in addition to the regular patrol.

Milwaukee: A City Built on Water | Program |
[Original Airdate: April 22, 2015]
Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

New Akron Blimp Test Flights April 4, 2014
Goodyear Unveils New State-of-the-Art Blimp...Goodyear reveals larger, faster airship; launches nationwide contest to choose its name
AKRON, Ohio, March 14, 2014 -- The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company today unveiled an all-new, state-of-the-art version of its world-famous icon, the Goodyear Blimp. The new airship is larger, faster, and more maneuverable and builds on the company's legacy as the world's leading builder and operator of airships.
The new blimp was introduced to media, Goodyear associates and dealers at an event held at Goodyear's Wingfoot Lake hangar in Suffield, Ohio. The blimp is scheduled to begin test flights over Northeast Ohio later this month before going into service in the summer.
The completion of the new blimp marks the beginning of a new era for our airship program and reflects Goodyear's commitment to remaining at the forefront of aerial broadcast coverage and support, said Paul Fitzhenry, senior vice president, global communications. This airship will offer enhanced aerial television coverage capabilities, increased flight range to cover more events and an unparalleled passenger experience.
In conjunction with the unveiling, Goodyear announced the launch of a nationwide contest to name the new blimp.
Construction of the new airship
Assembly of the new blimp began in March 2013 at Goodyear's Wingfoot Lake hangar. An international team of engineers and technicians from Goodyear and Germany's ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik worked side by side to complete the build project. Parts such as the tail fins and gondola were built in Germany and shipped to the U.S. for assembly. The balloon-like body of the airship -- the envelope -- is made of polyester with an innovative film from DuPont™ called Tedlar®, surrounding a semi-rigid internal structure, which differentiates this airship from previous Goodyear blimps.
New appearance honors tradition
This airship is the first of a new generation of Goodyear blimps that will be different in construction, appearance, and operation than the current fleet of blimps. The new helium-filled airship is 246 feet long, more than 50 feet longer than the previous blimps and just 18 yards shorter than an American football field. The blimp features a new paint scheme while retaining Goodyear's logo and traditional blue and yellow branding on a silver envelope.
The gondola delivers an unparalleled passenger experience with seating for up to 12 passengers and with improved viewing through larger, wrap-around windows, providing sweeping panoramic views. In addition, a new interior and seating will add to the ride's comfort.
Innovation in flight
The new airship incorporates the latest in on-board avionics and flight control systems. Whereas pilots of the previous generation of blimps controlled the airships' movements with a manual flight system in use since 1925, the new ship features custom computer-controlled avionics. Electronic controls work in conjunction with an on-board computer to regulate engine thrust, up-and-down movement, and right-and-left movement. Tail fin operation will be controlled by a joystick device. These advancements result in more precise operation of the airship while in flight, on landing, and on take off. In addition, the new airship has a top speed of 73 miles per hour, compared to the current maximum of approximately 50 miles per hour giving the blimp greater range to cover more events.
HELLO, My Name Is...
Every Goodyear blimp needs a name and, once again, the company is inviting the public to participate in a Goodyear Name the Blimp contest. Entrants over 18 years of age in the United States and Washington, DC can submit a name for the new blimp by visiting Goodyear.com/NametheBlimp or Facebook.com/GoodyearBlimp. One name will be chosen from the entries and the contest winner will join the Goodyear Blimp for a day of airship activities. In addition, nine runner-up winners will receive a set of Goodyear tires. The contest opens on Friday, March 14 at 9 a.m. EST and will close on Friday, April 4.
This will be only the second blimp in history to get its name from a consumer naming contest. The first contest was held in 2006 and featured more than 20,000 unique names. The winning name, Spirit of Innovation, was given to the airship that now operates from Pompano Beach, Fla.
Full contest rules, format, and entry form can be found at Goodyear.com/NametheBlimp.

Montpelier State House and WACR 804
Here we are on the banks of the Winooski River in beautiful Montpelier, Vermont, which is the state capital of Vermont. Here, we see the golden dome of the capitol building and then pan down to see WACR 804, which is an excursion train that was chartered by the Mass Bay RRE club. Today, WACR consists of Green Mountain Railroad coaches 1323 and 1312, and GP9R 804 (hence the symbol name WACR 804). 804 was originally built in 1955 as N&W GP9 13 and was rebuilt in 1978, was given a low hood short nose, and was converted to a short hood forward engine, even though the control stand is still on the long hood side of the cab. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on April 4th, 2009.
