Exploring Bwindi Impenetrable National Park | Gorilla Safari Lodge | Uganda
Our first stop in Uganda - Bwindi Impenetrable National Park turned out to be so much more than we expected. Not only is it THE place to track mountain gorillas in Uganda, but it is a beautiful forest, home to other primates, many birds, and some nice waterfalls.
During our time in Bwindi, we stayed at Gorilla Safari Lodge (gorillasafarilodge.com), located in Rushaga sector and got a chance to visit the Rushaga community as well as the Batwa Community living just outside the forest. Before Bwindi was declared a National Park, the Batwa people used to live in the forest. They hunted, ate fruits, and lived in harmony with the forest. After being kicked out of the park, they were forced to move to Rushaga and now rely on tourism for income to sustain themselves and their families.
We hope our visit will inspire others to add Bwindi to their list of must-see destinations in Uganda!

The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is one of two subspecies of the eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei). It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, as the total population is estimated to comprise 1,004 individuals in two populations as of 2018. One population lives in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and the other in the Virunga Mountains in three adjacent national parks, namely Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo
The fur of the mountain gorilla, often thicker and longer than that of other gorilla species, enables them to live in colder temperatures. Gorillas can be identified by nose prints unique to each individual. Males, at a mean weight of 195 kg (430 lb) upright standing height of 168 cm (66 in) usually weigh twice as much as the females, at a mean of 100 kg (220 lb) and a height of 140 cm (55 in).[8] This subspecies is smaller than the eastern lowland gorilla, the other subspecies of eastern gorilla. Adult males have more pronounced bony crests on the very top and back of their skulls, giving their heads a more conical shape. These crests anchor the powerful temporalis muscles, which attach to the lower jaw (mandible). Adult females also have these crests, but they are less pronounced. Like all gorillas they feature dark brown eyes framed by a black ring around the iris. Adult males are called silverbacks because a saddle of gray or silver-colored hair develops on their backs with age. The hair on their backs is shorter than on most other body parts, and their arm hair is especially long. The tallest silverback recorded was a 1.95 m (6 ft 5 in) with an arm span of 2.7 m (8 ft 10 in), a chest of 1.98 m (6 ft 6 in), and a weight of 219 kg (483 lb), shot in Alimbongo, northern Kivu in May 1938. There is an unconfirmed record of another individual, shot in 1932, that was 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in) and weighed 218.6 kg (482 lb). The heaviest silverback recorded was a 1.83 m (6 ft 0 in) shot in Ambam, Cameroon, which weighed 267 kg (589 lb).
The mountain gorilla is primarily terrestrial and quadrupedal. However, it will climb into fruiting trees if the branches can carry its weight, and it is capable of running bipedally up to 6 m (20 ft). Like all great apes other than humans, its arms are longer than its legs. It moves by knuckle-walking (like the common chimpanzee, but unlike the bonobo and both orangutan species), supporting its weight on the backs of its curved fingers rather than its palms.
The mountain gorilla is diurnal, most active between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Many of these hours are spent eating, as large quantities of food are needed to sustain its massive bulk. It forages in early morning, rests during the late morning and around midday, and in the afternoon it forages again before resting at night. Each gorilla builds a nest from surrounding vegetation to sleep in, constructing a new one every evening. Only infants sleep in the same nest as their mothers. They leave their sleeping sites when the sun rises at around 6 am, except when it is cold and overcast; then they often stay longer in their nests.

The Oruzogo Gorilla Family lies within the Ruhija sector in north Eastern Bwindi National Park, Uganda. Visiting them in the jungles of Bwindi makes your heart skip a bit. Even though you anticipate the encounter, nothing can really prepare you for the feeling you get when looking into the eyes of the gorillas. It left me awestruck and overwhelmed. Amazing experience.

More on the Oruzogo Gorillas:
The Oruzogo group lies within Ruhija in north Eastern Bwindi. This group was opened for gorilla tourism in June 2011. Thegroup’s name is derived from one of the plants locally referred to as “Oruzogo”, a great delicacy to the gorillas.
Oruzogo is currently the largest habituated gorilla group within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Currently the group has 16 mountain gorillas in the Oruzogo family are led Tibirikwata a dominant male silverback.
The major mountain gorillas in this gorilla family include Birungi, Mutesi, Kashundwe, Nyakiina, Kaganga, Katooto, Kanywani, Kakobe, Buchura, Busungu, Otaka, Bwoba, Karimi, Kiromba and Buchura.
All these names have meanings describing the major characteristics of the gorillas; Kanywani means friendly, Katooto means young one, Busungu means short tempered, Kaganga means the giant one, Kakobe means the one that looks like a monkey and many others. The mountain gorillas in Uganda are named to enable easy identification by researchers and the visiting tourists.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda
Our Gorilla Habituation Experience in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda
On our recent trip to Uganda we visited the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and did a Gorilla Habituation Experience. Unlike the standard gorilla trekking experience, this trek allowed us to meet a semi-habituated gorilla family and observe them for almost four hours.
The most impressive moment came soon after we reached the family and they were all up in the trees. After a few minutes the huge silverback male climbed down from his tree and ambled straight past us, totally unconcerned with our presence. This is because he has come from a family that had been fully habituated before forming his own family.
Everyone in the gorilla family follows the lead of this enormous gorilla and so did we!
The family consisted of 8 gorillas in total, the silverback, five females and a male and female infant. Half of the family were reluctant to come close but two of the females, the silverback and the male infant were quite happy with us around. The baby tried to show us how brave he was by beating his chest in front of us - too cute! They truly are beautiful creatures and it's great that the money we spent goes toward helping protect them.
We were blessed with excellent weather for our experience, except on our way back where we had a little bit of rain. It could have been a lot worse!

Mukiza Mountain Gorilla Family - Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Uganda - November, 2019
Mukiza and his family – Here is Mukiza, the silverback and dominant male of this mountain gorilla family. Mukiza was born in 1999 and has been the leader of the family since about 2016.
They live in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda. The elevation is above 7,000 feet here and it is slightly below the equator. The family has been moving and eating most of the morning, tracked by Rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority assigned both to protect the gorillas and to direct permitted and guided gorilla trekking groups to them for an hour of close observation After following our UWA guide for about an hour through the mountain forest, we have arrived as the family is resting, grooming each other and three young ones playing after a morning of browsing. Our permit allows for one hour of viewing after which we must leave and return through the forest to the starting point
Great Apes - Amazing Gorillas and Birds in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda 2019 (4K-Video)
At eye-level with the rare mountain gorillas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Observing these animals in the wild was an unforgettable experience. We had the unique opportunity to visit two different gorilla families in the Buhoma and Ruhija sector, both with a silverback, several adults and babies.
The Bwindi impenetrable forest is also a birders paradise. During our excursion we saw a huge variety of different species of birds including sunbirds, tinkerbirds, African yellow white-eye, white-tailed blue flycatcher and the Viellot’s black weaver and many more. A big Thank You to our excellent guide Nicholas! Please make sure to arrange with him if you plan for a birding trip in Uganda:
Welcome to our birding and gorilla tracking safari to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda in August 2019. We stayed three nights at the wonderful Silverback Lodge at Buhoma where we visited the mountain gorillas and went for an amazing birding excursion. The Bwindi impenetrable forest is an astonishing place to observe different primates and offers an amazing variety of birds. Also a big thank to our wonderful guide Beki from Great Lakes Safaris.
For animal identification, please refer to the video subtitle or to the species list below.

Safari in Uganda: Experiencing Bwindi away from the gorillas
Bwindi National Park has become almost universally known as a home for the rare mountain gorilla. But while many Ugandans might have heard of the park, they have not been anywhere near it and have no plans to ever go to Bwindi.
In fact within the class A national parks in Uganda, Bwindi impenetrable forest national park gets the least number of Ugandan visitors.
However, what many Ugandans do not realise is that there is a lot more to Bwindi national park than the gorilla tracking which many say is priced out of their budgets. Bwindi national park and the areas around it possess captivating green hills whose scenic beauty alone is reason enough to visit and experience.
