Grand Coulee Dam is a gravity dam on the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington built to produce hydroelectric power and provide irrigation water. It was constructed between 1933 and 1942, originally with two power plants. A third power station was completed in 1974 to increase its energy production. It is the largest electric power-producing facility in the United States.[3]
The proposal to build the dam was the focus of a bitter debate during the 1920s between two groups. One wanted to irrigate the ancient Grand Coulee with a gravity canal and the other supported a high dam and pumping scheme. Dam supporters won in 1933, but for fiscal reasons the initial design was for a low dam 290 ft (88 m) high which would generate electricity, but not support irrigation. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and a consortium of three companies called MWAK (Mason-Walsh-Atkinson Kier Company) began construction that year. After visiting the construction site in August 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt began endorsing the high dam design which, at 550 ft (168 m) high, would provide enough electricity to pump water to irrigate the Columbia Basin. The high dam was approved by Congress in 1935 and completed in 1942; the first water over-topped its spillway on June 1 of that year. For more info, visit this link:

Scenic Drive To Grand Coulee Dam 2020
The Sun is shining and that means time to explore new places. We start this trip in Wenatchee, Washington. The drive takes us about one hour and fifty minutes to travel 96.9 miles north and east of our starting point. It's a magnificent road trip taking us through mountains, plateaus, and valleys.
Banks lake is the lake we follow to along the highway which is a 27 mile long fresh water reservoir, and part of the Columbia Basin Project, the lake occupies the northern portion of the Grand Coulee.
Below are facts about the dam from the Department of The Interior/ Bureau of Reclamation website.
I hope you enjoy the video, Hit like at the bottom and leave us comment below if you would like.
This is a must see trip if you are ever in Central Washington State.
Grand Coulee Dam Facts and Stats:
Grand Coulee Dam is the largest hydropower producer in the United States, generating more than 21 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. That’s enough power to supply 4.2 million households with electricity for one year. Power from Grand Coulee Dam is supplied to eleven western states (WA, OR, ID, MT, WY, CO, CA, NV, NM, UT, AZ) and Canada.
Grand Coulee Dam is one of the largest concrete structures in the world. It contains nearly 12 million cubic yards of concrete.
What could you build with 12 million cubic yards of concrete?
You could build a sidewalk four feet wide and four inches thick and wrap it twice around the equator (50,000 miles). You could build a highway from Seattle, Washington to Miami, Florida. You could build the Grand Coulee Dam, one of the modern wonders of the world.

Construction of the Grand Coulee Dam
Grand Coulee is the largest dam in the Columbia River Basin and one of the largest in the world. Everything about the dam is large: it is 550 feet tall, measured from its foundation in solid granite, or approximately 350 feet from the downstream river surface to the top of the dam. It is 5,223 feet long (57 feet short of a mile). The dam is 500 feet thick at its base, 30 feet thick at the top and contains 11,975,521 cubic yards of concrete. The spillway is 1,300 feet wide and covers an area of 13.26 acres.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation began construction of Grand Coulee Dam in 1933 as the key structure in its multipurpose Columbia Basin Project. It took nine years to build the dam, but even more years of battling and political maneuvering before construction even started. While it was recognized early in the century that the Columbia Basin had rich farmland that needed only water to flourish, the method for providing that water caused much controversy. A Spokane group insisted upon a 134-mile gravity flow canal from Lake Pend Oreille to the Basin, while a Wenatchee/central Washington group favored building a big dam on the Columbia at Grand Coulee. The battle raged for 13 years.
Ultimately, the Great Depression and President Roosevelt's subsequent New Deal program gave concrete backing to the Grand Coulee Dam, as dam construction promised long-term employment for thousands of unemployed as well as a continuing economic boost to the region.
The construction of the Grand Coulee Dam was the crown jewel of President Roosevelt's public works projects in the Pacific Northwest. The project employed tens of thousands of people. So many workers put in so many hours that the dam was finished two years ahead of schedule. Thousands came to the Grand Coulee looking for work in the midst of the Depression. They worked around the clock to finish the dam by 1942. By the end of the construction, 77 men had lost their lives.
Lake Franklin D. Roosevelt is the Columbia River backed up behind the dam. It is over 150 miles long with 630 miles of shore line. Creation of this reservoir forced the relocation of over 3,000 people, including Native Americans whose ancestral lands were partially flooded. Grand Coulee Dam flooded over 21,000 acres of prime bottom land where Native Americans had been living and hunting for thousands of years and forced the relocation of settlements and graveyards. Small communities and hunting grounds disappeared beneath the new lake, and the dam brought an end to the great salmon migrations to the rivers and streams above.
In 1936, three years after construction began, the Columbia River still was flowing over the foundation of Grand Coulee Dam. By 1938, the rising dam would block the river
In the 1950s, the American Society of Civil Engineers listed Grand Coulee as one of the seven civil engineering wonders of the United States
Grand Coulee's primary goal was for irrigation purposes. However, hydroelectric power played a vital role as part of the war effort and as such the need for electricity would increase so Grand Coulee dam's primary goal changed. When completed in 1942, the dam provided the enormous electrical power necessary to make aluminum, so essential for World War II production of planes and ships. It was Grand Coulee that powered the production of plutonium at the nearby Hanford Site, which figured prominently in the making of the atomic bomb.
Grand Coulee Dam was the center of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. Built as a public works project of the New Deal, it provided irrigation to approximately 700,000 acres in Eastern Washington, making the desert bloom via the Banks Lake reservoir. Grand Coulee Dam also produces 21 billion kilowatts of electricity each year, and recreational opportunities abound on Lake Roosevelt.
The dam has three power plants housing 24 main generators and three smaller generators. The total generating capacity is 6,494,000 kilowatts.
In 1967, construction began on the massive, 20-story-high, Third Power Plant, and today Grand Coulee is the largest hydropower producer in the United States, producing 21 billion kilowatt hours of electricity a year, or about 11 percent of the power requirements of the Pacific Northwest. Grand Coulee still ranks among the largest dams and top producers of electricity in the world, although it has been eclipsed in recent years by dams such China's Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River, which has been criticized for its impacts on people and the ecosystem. Grand Coulee also has faced criticism, most notably for its impact on West Coast salmon and steelhead populations.
Since 2011 Grand Coulee has been undergoing renovation work which is anticipated to take several more years.

Grand Coulee Dam, Washington USA - Two Minute Travel by Continental Drifters
Have you ever looked at a dam and wondered how it works? What’s going on behind those giant walls?
Grand Coulee Dam is known as North America’s Largest Masonry Structure, so we were curious about it. Since the dam offers tours we decided to take a look.
For more travel stories check out ContinentalDrifters.ca
Built between 1933 and 1975 the dam is 550 feet tall, from the 500 foot wide polished granite base,
The dam is so big it’s got a paved two lane road across the top. The road is closed to traffic, but tours are given special access.
On one side of the top of the dam you look into Lake Roosevelt. it’s actually is actually the Columbia River backed up behind Grand Coulee Dam. Those giant grates? They keep trees, logs and large pieces of debris from getting sucked in and jamming up the works inside.
Speaking of inside, after heading down hundreds of feet in a fast moving elevator, you get to the old generators. Still churning out massive amount of power these babies are the originals, put in when the dam was built. More recently a third power house was built which generates much more power, and is way more efficient.
When you include the that third power house, Grand Coulee Dam is now almost 1 mile long.
Back on top, and to the other side of that paved road… get your stomach ready for this… you can look straight down the face of the dam to the much shallower river below.
The Grand Coulee Dam sits deep in the Columbia River Gorge of North
Central Washington. It is located about 1.5 h drive west of Spokane, nearly 2 hours drive South of Canada's border, and about 4 has drive east of Seattle.

Grand Coulee Dam Scenario Part I
The moment everyone has been waiting for.. Part I of the Grand Coulee Dam Scenario is released! Enjoy!
*Those of you wondering about a Part 2*
Part 2 has been planned out already, with some alerts already written. I hope to have a live preview ready to be aired on March 15 **Likely delayed to May or June**
As for The Eruption, Part 2 is still being written by matteng1997. Like previously mentioned, chances are I won't get my fingers on it for a few months or so. If there is no Part 2 by April 30, don't spam my channel asking why...I will post via Facebook and Twitter when Part 2 begins production and its estimated release date.
Notices:
I am not responsible for any EAS activations resulting from this scenario.
This is a 50 minute video, be sure to write down where you left off if you decide to take a break.
If you feel/think that you hear an error on some of the alerts, more than likely I meant for it to be the way it is (example, some alerts will list counties, than the state initials). However, some minor errors may have slipped through my fingers. Visual errors may have also slipped through my fingers as well. I will take any corrections and improve them for Part 2 provided that they are truly errors.

Grand Coulee Dam is a concrete gravity dam on the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington, built to produce hydroelectric power and provide irrigation water. Constructed between 1933 and 1942, Grand Coulee originally had only two powerhouses. The third powerhouse, completed in 1974 to increase energy production, makes Grand Coulee the largest power station in the United States by nameplate-capacity at 6,809 MW.
