Birding on the Outer Banks and Northeast NC
People from all over the country now come to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in search of birds. At the William B. Umstead Memorial (“Old Manns Harbor”) Bridge each year you can find a Purple Martin Roost with over 100,000 birds and in the fall the local folks put on the Wings Over Water Festival. This edition of My Heart Will Always Be In Carolina is all about birding. On OBXTV.

The Corolla Shipwreck - Oldest in North Carlolina?
This shipwreck is thought to be THE oldest one in North Carolina. That would be older than Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge. This wreck was uncovered from the ocean floor during the winter and recently a group has removed it from the beach to preserve it. Currently it sits at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, but will be moved to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras. It is believed to be from the mid-1600's.

OBX Outer Banks Waves On the Beach Kitty Hawk North Carolina
The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.
The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.
The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.
The Wreck of the USS Huron off of Nags Head, NC
The USS Huron sits just 250 yards off of Nags Head and is a valuable historic and cultural part of the history of the Outer Banks, which is home to the Graveyard of the Atlantic. This documentary provides background on the wreck as well as insight into preserving this important piece of maritime heritage.

Best Part Is The GETTING THERE! Travato Trip to NC Outer Banks - Ep3: Cape Hatteras
People ask us all the time “what’s the best part about traveling in your Travato van”? Well for us it might just be the “GETTING THERE”. There’s just something amazing about driving your tiny home to campgrounds, grocery stores, malls, national parks and even on ferries. Well... and just about anywhere you’d drive your car or truck. And then you look back in the rearview mirror and there’s your home... with you entertainment system, your food, your clothes and your bathroom. It’s just a WOW moment every time we stop and think about it. As we leave our campsite in Ocracoke and drive down majestic Highway 12 the drive alone is worth the time and cost of this trip. But then we reach the end of the highway, because... we’re on an island. What now? Well, in line we go to get on the free ferry over to another island and the little community of Buxton, NC. When you board a ferry in your Travato camper van we’re betting like us you’ll appreciate just how small it is. For us it was like parking a minivan in line with other smaller vehicles. There are many other advantages to traveling with this small house on wheels but nothing makes us smile like the getting there feeling. So much so that instead of dreading leaving day while RV’ing now we actually look forward to it.
During this portion of the trip Maggie comes face to face with a huge Water Moccasin at Cape Point Campground. Luckily she escaped unharmed but man, it sure scared us to death. When you spend time out in the wilderness you’re going to see things. Things like deer walking right up to you, or hundreds of geese singing to the sunset or even a huge water moccasin snake that scared the life out of us.
