For two weeks, the whole Salzburg program went to Italy and Greece - in Italy, we went to Padua, Ravenna, Florence, Assisi, Rome, and Pompeii; in Greece, we went to Meteora, Delphi (and Itea), Athens, the Canal of Corinth, Vrachati, Mycenae, Epidauros, and Olympia, then we took a boat to Venice!

Introducing Italy is part of a series originally designed as Know your Allies, and finally titled the Atlantic Community Series.
Its objectives were to familiarize public opinion in each of the member country with the other Alliance members and to emphasize the national contributions to Western culture and political traditions, economic reconstruction and allied defense in the framework of NATO.
The series was produced between 1954 and 1956 and financed by the US government in the context of the Marshall Plan with the cooperation of the Information Service of NATO, and distributed by NATO. The films in the Atlantic Community Series received large non-theatrical distribution and, in some cases, were shown in cinemas and on TV. Language versions were made and distributed with the help of the national governments.
“My country and NATO” tells the story of each one of NATO’s members, using a selection of unique archival materials to take you back in time.

Gondola accident: German tourist killed in Venice, Italy

A 50-year-old German tourist was killed in a tragic gondola accident that took place in the Grand Canal of Venice, Italy on Saturday.
According to Venice's fire brigade, the man appeared to have been crushed to death between a water bus and a gondola near the Rialto bridge. Meanwhile, his 3-year-old daughter also suffered injuries to her head and face in the accident. She was sent to hospital in Padua for treatment.
The man was reportedly riding in a gondola with his wife and their three children before the accident. At the Rialto bridge, a 'vaporetto', or water bus, was either docking or leaving the stop when it crashed into the gondola, throwing the entire family into the water, with the father landing in the water between the two boats. The Venice fire chief said the driver of the water bus apparently did not see the gondola, with some reports saying the force of the impact split the smaller vessel in half.
I am really sad after what has happened, Venice mayor Giorgio Orsoni said.
An investigation has been launched into the accident.
The congested waterways of Venice have long been a point of concern for city authorities, as the large amount of water traffic has become a safety hazard, particularly during the times of the year when the city is flooded with tourists.
The Battle of Ravenna 1512 - The Italian Wars 6.
After their stunning victory at the Battle of Agnadello, the French become all too powerful. To counteract this, Pope Julius II starts to ponder an anti-French league. Spanish king Ferdinand II and Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I are reluctant about the matter. Therefore Julius II attacks the French, provoking them to attack papal lands in turn. To remove the French, Julius establishes the Holy League of 1510. Venice, the Swiss, Ferdinand, Maximilian and even Henry VIII join.
Led by the daring Gaston de Foix and Alfonso d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, the French go on the attack. In 1512 the French using advanced renaissance artillery tactics, defeat the League at the Battle of Ravenna. Despite this victory, with a pending English and Spanish invasion resulting from the conquest of Navarre, the French are forced to pull out from Italy. Venice and the Pope recover all they had lost, and the Swiss occupy Milan installing Massimiliano Sforza as a puppet ruler. A conflict between Venice and the Swiss soon develops. Julius again starts to plot, but he dies in 1513.
The Italian Wars was a series of conflicts that raged between 1494 and 1559 between the two major European powers, the Habsburgs who ruled the Holy Roman Empire and later Spain, and the Valois kings of France. At the height of the conflict the war involved Tudor England, the Ottoman Empire, Hungary, and all of Italy either as passive or active participants.
In terms of military tactics and strategy the Italian Wars saw the greatest innovations since the Roman Empire. Artillery finally came of age during the war prompting radical changes in terms of fortifications and battlefield tactics. Swiss pikemen, Landsknechts, and Spanish musketeers were amalgamated into a new type of standardized European infantry, the pike and shot formation. Cavalry although diminished in numbers, retained its place on the battlefield, being differentiated into heavy cavalry (men at arms), light cavalry and dragoons. In terms of strategy frontal medieval charges were replaced by careful maneuvering, the use of natural or man-made obstacles, and a keen attention to logistics. Commanders no longer fought in the front lines, but rather became managers of their armies. Politically the war shaped and reshaped the destinies of European countries for centuries to come.

Our trip to Padua - Park & House Tour
We stopped in Padua just for a couple of nights. The girls pull too much on the lead for me to be able to visit the city centre and the beautiful monuments of this ancient town. So we just stayed were the girls would feel more comfortable and mummy would be able to work ;-)

The Brutal Tattoo Ritual Built on Pain
Tattoos hurt, but for most people, the pain is just a means to an end. Tattoo artists are usually mindful of their client's pain threshold, catering for breaks and mitigating any unnecessary brutality. It's abnormal for tattoo artists to restrain people while they're getting tattooed, or for the tattooee to bolt upright in agony to escape the needle's unrelenting penetrations. Nor is it very common to see sadistic mirth occupying the faces of multiple tattoo artists as they inflict the unnaturally long, thick, shallow lines seemingly without pause.
Enter Brutal Black. It's the tattoo project where mandalas come to die and where pain is prioritized over aesthetics. Ritual and rebirth are at the forefront of this project helmed by Valerio Cancellier and Cammy Stewart. They take those brave enough to be tattooed by them on one of the most brutal experiences one can imagine; far beyond one's threshold for pain to create an entirely new experience.
