The Great Bronze Age Orme Mines of Wales | Copper Mining and Evidence of Giants in Ancient Britain
Hugh Newman explores the ancient copper mines of Llandudno in North Wales. 'The Great Orme Mines' have been in use for 4,000 years, but a neolithic dolmen and 14,000 year old artifacts have also been found in close proximity to the mine. 1,760 tonnes of copper ore (Malachite) was excavated and used all through Europe in the Bronze Age, enough to create 10 million bronze axes. Hugh goes down 60 feet into the mine, but it goes a further 150 feet down, and has over 5 miles of tunnels in total. Massive axe casts, and huge stone hammers are on display and Hugh suggests this may be the work of giants, as hundreds of accounts of bones and skeletons, as well as numerous legends talk of them being present in this area.

Llandudno copper mine on the Great Orme, good day out for the kids.
Uncovered in 1987 during a scheme to landscape an area of the Great Orme, the copper mines discovered represent one of the most astounding archaeological discoveries of recent times. Dating back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age they change our views about the ancient people of Britain and their civilized and structured society 2,000 years before the Roman invasion.
Over the past 28 years mining engineers, cavers and archaeologists have been slowly uncovering more tunnels and large areas of the surface landscape to reveal what is now thought to be the largest prehistoric mine, so far discovered in the world.

Exploring Copper Mines in North Wales U.K.
Copper mining is probably the oldest known mining activity in Wales with documented evidence of Bronze Age mining on the Great Orme near Llandudno and at Copa Hill in the valley of the River Ystwyth in Ceredigion. Further copper discoveries were exploited in Snowdonia just to the east of Beddgelert where the Sygun Copper Mine, within the Snowdonia National Park, gives an idea of the conditions faced by copper miners and is a popular tourist attraction. In the 18th century the massive deposits of copper together with a range of other metals was discovered and exploited at Parys Mountain on Anglesey.

A trip with the Great Orme Exploration Society into the flooded tramming level on the 110 yard level. This is a rarely visited area of the mines, and my last visit into this section was some 23 years ago. This trip was to explore all the workings going off the main level. As it turned out, the workings didn't extend very far but it was good to tick it off the list. The Southern end, from the engine shaft, is yet to be looked at in any detail. A seven hour trip made on the 28-9-19 with the aim of bolting a recently discovered internal shaft (Gracelands shaft) with Dave Flowers and Dave Wrennall of the Great Orme Exploration Society. This would turn out to be the first time either of us had got to four of the main shafts on the Great Orme from underground. The shafts were Romans, Treweeks, Higher and Owens. Once the Graceland shaft has been cleared of deads, it will save us an hour of travel time through restricted, unstable workings to reach the workings at the top of the shaft. These workings are very rarely visited and we are looking forward to exploring the new, fresh workings that will become easier to access.
Apologies for the flickering video in places. I was using a new light source which needs a bit of further refining to eradicate the flicker.
The Great Orme Copper Mine
This is a Bronze Age copper mine which was discoverd in 1987. It goes back to at least 3500 BC.
As the copper was extracted and processed, in candlelight underground, the spoil was backfilled into exhausted shafts.

Hi Bubbles, we went on an adventure to Llandudno in North Wales and did some exploring along the coast. We found the Great Orme Copper Mines which are 4000 years old. We found out how our predecessors mined the rock for malachite smelted it down with fire to extract the copper from it. They set it into moulds to make jewellery, weapons and crowns. It was a fascinating glimpse into the past.

After visiting Penrhyn Castle Industrial Railway Museum, I took a break from my North Wales Railway Adventure to visit the Bronze Age Mine at the top of the Great Orme in Llandudno.
Featured in a segment of BBC's Coast Series 1 by Dr Alice Roberts, this prehistoric site is well worth visiting. I filmed my underground adventure inside the old mine workings; luckily, I had a hard hat on!
