Hanging Lake is a geologic wonder and is popular with travelers for its awe-inspiring beauty. Suspended on the edge of Glenwood Canyon's cliffs, the clear turquoise lake and the waterfalls that spill into it are a breathtaking sight after the rigorous uphill climb. Barrelrollman - Grizzly Creek, Glenwood Springs, CO 5/2014
Named in 1881 by the man who killed the largest grizzly bear in Colorado, the Grizzly Creek area near Glenwood Springs is still full of wildlife, though these days it's mostly songbirds, butterflies, mule deer and squirrels. Even as early as 1887 when a railroad track was constructed through the region, the Glenwood Canyon corridor served as a vital link in the Nation's surface transportation network. A primitive dirt road was built next in the early 1900s and this canyon road was upgraded to a two-lane paved highway, designated U.S. 6, in the 1930s. U.S. 6 became the primary highway link between Denver and States to the west for the next six decades. Opened to traffic on October 14, 1992, the Glenwood Canyon project, a 20-kilometer (12.5-mile)-long network of viaducts, bridges, and tunnels constructed through an extraordinarily narrow, environmentally sensitive gorge in western Colorado, marked a milestone in the Nation's transportation history. The project not only connected the final leg of Interstate 70 (I--70), but also it symbolized the completion of the original U.S. interstate highway system. Upon completion, the Glenwood Canyon project was revered for accomplishments in planning, context-sensitive design, work zone traffic safety and management, and construction achieved despite numerous physical, operational, and administrative obstacles faced during construction. The project won more than 30 awards, including the 1993 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Grizzly Creek Trail Head Introduction Glenwood TV
Alison's Introduction to the grizzly creek trailhead
SOOOO Beautiful! Hiking down Grizzly Creek with me in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
The billion year old canyon walls are painted by the setting sun's alpine glow. The Spring snow runoff has raised the creek and it crashes over logs and house-sized boulders. The rushing creek, cascades down waterfalls and swirls into crystal clear pools filled with wild trout. Wildflowers, mountain strawberries and fragile asters are blooming along the trail. The brilliant clear blue cloudless sky silhouettes the 4,000 foot canyon cliff walls, leaving me feeling like I have walked into a living painting of reds, oranges, greens and a thousand other colors. This is Earth at her best. I just wanted to share a little moment of the splendor and magnificence.

Glenwood Canyon, Colorado, United States
Glenwood Canyon Colorado, USA, 2005
Glenwood Canyon is a rugged scenic 12.5 mi (20 km) canyon on the Colorado River in western Colorado in the United States. Its walls climb as high as 1,300 ft (396 m) above the Colorado River. It is the largest such canyon on the Upper Colorado. The canyon, which has historically provided the routes of railroads and highways through western Colorado, currently furnishes the routes of Interstate 70 and the Central Corridor between Denver and Grand Junction. The canyon stretches from near Dotsero, where the Colorado receives the Eagle River, downstream in a west-southwest direction to just east of Glenwood Springs, on the mouth of the Roaring Fork. Most of the canyon is in Garfield County, with the upper portion near Dotsero lying in Eagle County.
In 1906, the canyon provided the route of the Taylor State Road, a gravel road that was the first route for automobiles through the Colorado Rockies. The canyon also provided the route for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the late 19th century. Through acquisitions, the line is currently part of the Union Pacific system. As Glenwood Canyon was one of the iconic scenic views along the California Zephyr passenger train, a monument to the dome car design was originally installed in the canyon. In the 1990s the monument was relocated to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden to make way for the construction of Interstate 70.
The canyon is widely considered one of the most scenic natural features on the Interstate Highway System of the United States. Foot access to the canyon is available at four rest areas along Interstate 70 in the canyon. The Hanging Lake Rest Area (Exit 125) provides access to the canyon along a stretch where I-70 is concealed in the Hanging Lake Tunnel.
Glenwood canyon was formed relatively recently in Pleistocene time by the rapid cutting of the Colorado down through layers of sedimentary rock. The upper layers of the canyon are sandstone from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian. Sections of the lower canyon walls are made of Cambrian rock. The Mississippian layer that is prominent throughout much of the upper rim sections of the canyon is part of the Leadville Formation.

To get to the hot springs from Glenwood Springs, travel west on Highway 70 and take Exit 111. After you exit, take the first left at the stop sign onto South Canyon Creek Road (CR 134). Follow the road left and cross the bridge. 0.5 miles after the bridge there is a pull off on the right.
