20 Things to do in Rome, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript: (ROMA)
Rome, the Eternal City. After several trips to Italy, we finally managed to visit our biggest oversight: the capital! From wandering through Roman ruins to devouring pizza, and climbing up lookout points to feasting on gelato, in this travel guide, we’re going to share with you 20 things to do in Rome, Italy:
We reached Roscioli which was the best pizza in Rome. Pizzas are served by the weight and we sampled 7 different pizza slices.
We stopped at Largo di Torre Argentina an archaeological site home to four different temples containing parts of the portico of Pompey.
It was a short walk to the Pantheon, a former Roman temple turned church, which dates back to the year 125 AD. The Pantheon boasted the world’s largest cupola up until the 15th century, and it is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in existence to this day making it one of the greatest architectural achievements by the ancient Romans.
If you want to find the best gelato, look for colours that are muted with small batches.
One of the many things to do in Rome, was to visit the Trevi Fountain. This is the largest Baroque fountain in the city.
Rome’s most famed attraction is the Colosseum and its surrounding ruins. We started our visit on Palatine Hill, the most central of Rome's seven hills. What visitors see today are the ruins of the Palace of Domitian, a 1st-century complex, which served as the main imperial palace for 300 years. We continued to the Roman Forum. This square was the centre of ancient Roman life, with government buildings, temples, and markets. We reached the Colosseum, which was the largest amphitheatre ever built and could hold an estimated 50,000 and 80,000 spectators.
Walking through the Vatican Museum was more overwhelming than enjoyable. We visited Vatican City to climb St. Peter’s Basilica for views of Rome.
Castel Sant’Angelo was commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family.
Villa Borghese is the 3rd largest public park in Rome with gardens, villas, and ponds with views of the city overlooking Piazza del PO-polo, the people’s square.
That concludes our tour of Rome showcasing the many things to do in Rome on your own trip.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

Rome City Tour, Rome, Italy
Modern and old, past and present go side by side, all the time. Whether you are in Rome for 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months, be prepared to step into the world's biggest open air museum.
Rome will seduce you and it will hardly leave you indifferent. It will surprise you, like a beautiful middle aged woman that has still plenty to offer and whose beauty is just been merely blurred by time passing by.
Rome is one of world's most photogenic cities - not surprising when you remember what's here - The Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, St Peter's Square, Spanish Steps, Colosseum.
Whether you spend your time sightseeing, or lazing in cafés watching the world go by, it will be your turn to feature in your very own Roman Holiday.
This tour includes:
0:03 - Saint Peter's Square (Piazza San Pietro), is located directly in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the papal enclave within Rome (the Piazza borders to the East the rione of Borgo).
2:31 - Portico d'Ottavia, Largo 16 Ottobre 1943 is an ancient structure in Rome's Jewish ghetto. It was built by Augustus in the name of his sister, Octavia Minor, at some time after 27 BC in place of the Porticus Metelli, the porticus enclosed within its colonnaded walks the temples of Jupiter Stator and Juno Regina, next to the Theater of Marcellus. It was burned in 80 and restored, probably by Domitian, and again after a second fire in 203 by Septimius Severus and Caracalla. It was adorned with foreign marble, and contained many famous works of art, enumerated in Pliny's Natural History.
4:55 - The Fabricius' Bridge (Ponte dei Quattro Capi) is the oldest Roman bridge in Rome, still existing in its original state. Built in 62 BC, it spans half of the Tiber River, from the Campus Martius on the east side to Tiber Island in the middle (the Pons Cestius is west of the island). Quattro Capi (four heads) refers to the two marble pillars of the two-faced Janus herms on the parapet, which were moved here from the nearby Church of St. Gregory (Monte Savello) in the 14th century.
6:21 - The Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II (National Monument of Victor Emmanuel II) or Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland) or Il Vittoriano is a monument to honour Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy, located in Rome, Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. The monument was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1885; sculpture for it was parceled out to established sculptors all over Italy, such as Angelo Zanelli.[1] It was inaugurated in 1911 and completed in 1935.
8:19 - Outside The Colosseum (Anfiteatro Flavio).
11:00 - The Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi) is a fountain in the Trevi rione in Rome, Italy. Standing 26 metres (85.3 feet) high and 20 metres (65.6 feet) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world.
11:56 - Panorama of Rome from outside the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti.
Filmed using the Sony HDR-HC9 HDV1080i High Definition Handycam.
Tips on the Best Rome Tourist Pass
ARE ROME TOURIST PASSES WORTH IT? If you’re going to see two or more sites in Rome, then the answer is probably yes.
For a comparison and reviews about each option, read our guide:
Passes can save you plenty of money, but they can also save you time.
ROME DISCOUNT PASSES
The top three Rome tourist passes are the Omnia Vatican and Rome Card, the Rome City Pass (Turbopass) and Roma Pass.
There is a lesser-known card, Rome City Pass that operates a little differently than the other three. We have written about it in its own section.
All three passes pictured above have many features in common, but also have some variation, so it is important that you read all of the fine print.
All three of the discount passes below offer these money-saving features:
-free or reduced hop-on-hop-off bus tour tickets
-some form of unlimited free use of public transportation
-free or reduced price museum and attraction entry
-fast track (‘skip the line’) entry at some attractions
-free or reduced admission to popular attractions, such as the Colosseum and the Vatican

Roma pass: Buy or pass?
My review of the Roma pass and all its benefits! I give my opinion of the pass and whether it's worth it or not. I explain where you can buy it, the costs and what you get when you buy the pass. Moreover, this video takes a look at a few things you need to consider when you are thinking of buying the pass. For instance, whether or not you would get any value out of the card depends on the type of traveler you are and the type of tourism you will be doing in Rome.
You also need to consider what exactly you're going to be doing here in Rome and equally important; how long will you be here? Generally speaking, planning is everything when you come to Rome. Even though there are plenty of things to discover when we choose to simply walk around and see what life has for us just around the corner, you do need a rough game plan when you come here. If you are planning to see specific places at specific times including frequent usage of public transport, then the card might be a good option.
My wife and I have bought similar cards while on vacation in other cities such as New York, Amsterdam and Helsinki. We then came to the conclusion that they can be worth it, but again, it depends on your planning before you arrive at your destination.
