Lighthouse and chapel at Guia Fortress, Macau (China)
The Guia Fortress and chapel were constructed between 1622 and 1638, after an unsuccessful attempt by the Netherlands to capture colonial Portuguese Macau from Portugal.
The lighthouse was constructed between 1864 and 1865, and was the first western style lighthouse in east Asia or on the China coast. The lighthouse stands at 91 metres tall (almost 300 feet as measured from water level), and has a light visible for over 30+ kilometres (20 miles) in clear weather conditions.
The entire complex was built upon the highest point on Macau, Guia Hill, and named after the same location. The chapel was built around 1622 inside the Guia Fortress.
Unfortunately the transfer of sovereignty of Macau (a former Portuguese colony) and Hong Kong (a former British colony), to the People's Republic of China (PRC), took place in the late 1990s. Both were some of the world's most prosperous countries but are now considered Special Administrative Districts of the PRC. Since both Macau and Hong Kong will maintain a high degree of autonomy, for about 50 years beyond their loss of sovereignty, they're still considered separate countries by most measures (and me).

東望洋炮台 / Fortaleza da Guia / The Guia Fortress
Here I take a look around The Guia Fortress / 東望洋炮台, in the heart of old Macau peninsular. The fortress comprises a historical military fort, chapel and lighthouse and is on the highest point on Macau. The whole site being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The fort and chapel were constructed between 1622 & 1638, following an unsuccessful attempt by the Dutch to capture Macau from the Portuguese.
The lighthouse was built between 1864 and 1865, the first western style lighthouse in East Asia and on the Chinese coast.
The charming chapel, Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia, 聖母雪地殿教堂 adjacent to the lighthouse, was built around 1622 by Clarist nuns to provide the soldiers of the fort with religeous services. During restoration work in 1998, frescoes were uncovered lining the interior walls of the chapel, representing both western & Chinese themes.
Along the ridge of Guia Hill are a series of tunnels and gun emplacements built as defensive network in 1931.
The hill is accessible by foot, road or Cable-car.
The Guia Tunnel
This is a small work of fiction that I did with some classmates for our video production course. Although the quality of the production isn't professional I learned a lot working on it because I had to deal with most of the major aspects of post-production.

Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is the most important traditional festival in China. It begins on the first day of the first lunar month (usually in late January or early February) and ends on the 15th day of the first lunar month (Lantern Festival).
Chinese New Year is a time for families to be together. Celebrations include having annual reunion dinner on Chinese New Year's Eve, setting firecrackers, giving lucky money to children, ringing the New Year bell, sending Chinese New Year greetings, dragon and lion dancing, and Niu Yangge (traditional dance in northern China).
Every year, visitors flock to Macau for Chinese New Year and during the weeks before the holiday, local residents, businesses and organizations are making preparations for a wide array of festive events to celebrate. Flowers for good luck are an important part of the season, and brighten our winter days, especially at the Taipa Houses-Museum, where visitors will find themselves in a winter kaleidoscope of blooms.
Kids will delight in the Winter at Cotai Strip, with Dreamworks stars and fabulous ice sculptures at Ice World, a 50-foot Christmas tree and real ice rink and snow falling outdoors, Kid's Dreams on Stamps at Communications Museum of Macau, A Starry Tale at the Macau Science Centre Planetarium, and Macau Tower X Tomica Exhibition and bone upon local history at the Guia Hill Military Tunnels and an exhibition of the fireworks industry. There's fun for the whole family every weekend, with street performers putting on shows at popular tourist sites outdoors and a Baby and Child Products Expo indoors.
Everyone will enjoy finding out about Macau's less-known districts through neighborhood walking tours, and now it's easier than ever with the Step Out, Experience Macau's Communities walking tour maps.
Music fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming weeks. Pop stars Candy Lo and Jason Chan will serenade us in concerts at the Macau Forum, World Heritage sites will vibrate with jazz, mini concerts and Spring Music, and harp superstar Xavier de Maistre will interpret classical favorites at the Macau Cultural Centre. Sinulog welcomes everyone to sing, dance and enjoy Filipino fare in a day-long festival.
Art buffs have a wealth of exhibits to appreciate at Macau's museums and galleries, among them the 9th Macau Design Biennial at the Museum of Art, and a range of offerings from the classical - Arts of the Masters of Xiling Seal Society, Luoyang pottery, and - to the contemporary- Yue Minjun Contemporary Sculpture, Hong Wai Pop Ink - and everything in between at the Art Fair at 5 Outubro Street.
Macau is more than ever an adventure for shoppers, with the Hong Kong Trendy Buying Expo 2014 in town this month, the Tap Seac Flower and Gift Market, and the Taipa Flea Market adding to the fun.
While it's a bustling, busy month, there are still some chances to relax, with a cup of fragrant tea at the Tea Culture House, wine sampling at the Wine Museum, a visit to historic temple for quiet contemplation, or a Harbor Cruise to get away from it all. Macau has something for everyone to enjoy all month long, with the Experience Macau app, free citywide WiFi Go, 'Macau Budget Hotels Site, the Audio Guide Service and Tourism Hotline to smooth your journey in the city.

Guia Fortress, Macau
Marco Polo Trip.
Wednesday, April 24, 2013, 12:09:46 PM.
Guia Fortress, Macau:
The fortress was built between 1622 and 1638. Inside the fortress stands Guia Chapel, originally established by Clarist nuns, who resided at the site before establishing the Convent of St. Clare. The chapel's elaborate frescoes depict representations of both western and Chinese themes, displaying motifs of religious and mythological inspiration that are a perfect example of Macau's multicultural dimension.
Guia Lighthouse, dating from 1865, which also stands within the perimeter, is the first modern lighthouse on the Chinese coast. Guia Fortress, along with the chapel and lighthouse are symbols of Macau's maritime, military and missionary past.

Day trip Macau from Hong Kong. Day trip with sightseeing Macau tour in the historical part of Macau city before returning with the Hong Kong ferry.
