Venice of the North stadium ++REPLAY++
(2 Jul 2018) LEADIN:
St. Petersburg is gearing up for the next World Cup match to be played there - when Sweden take on Switzerland on July 3rd.
The city, which is steeped in history, is fostering a trendy image with countless bars, cafes and clubs.
STORYLINE:
It has a long history, breath-taking architecture, and picturesque waterways.
St. Petersburg - or the Venice of the North - needs little introduction.
This summer, the port city on the Baltic Sea hosts the world's biggest football tournament, along with ten other Russian cities.
According to one local travel agent, the city didn't need to make many extra preparations for the event. It's been staging such occasions for years.
St. Petersburg always has something to surprise its guests with, even if they aren't visiting for the first time, says Kiril Sokolov, head of Neva Seasons travel agency.
St. Petersburg is actually one of the few cities, which have been ready for hosting large-scale sports events for a long time.
Saint Petersburg Stadium, also referred to as the Zenit Arena, Krestovsky Stadium, and Piter Arena, was opened in 2017. It's home to local football team FC Zenit Saint Petersburg.
The stadium was initially planned to be completed in 2009, but works were hampered by a series of delays, including a redesign to comply with FIFA requirements and fraud investigations.
Works finally sped up in 2016. The stadium was completed in April 2017, by which time overall costs had soared past $1 billion USD, making it one of the most expensive stadiums ever built.
It has a capacity of 68,000.
During time between matches, fans have plenty to do and see in the city - from traditional museums and historical sights, to river boat tours and modern exhibits.
There's also plenty to discover when it comes to food and drink.
On the banks of the Fontanka River, modern city cafe Mechtateli - meaning 'The Dreamers' - serves coffee and a selection of signature food dishes.
For the World Cup, chefs have developed a special Russian menu with a strong focus on local produce. It was designed to showcase several local specialties, all during one lunch.
We made a very interesting menu based on local products, explains cafe founder Lyudmila Ivanova.
We simply called it 'Russian menu' and tried to use the maximum of what we and our neighbouring regions can offer while making it.
Our chef himself went to the forest to collect herbs for these dishes, which we accompanied with local wines.
We hope that through this menu, we will show the diversity of our modest northern lands, and will keep it really delicious, beautiful and interesting.
One dish on the menu is this quail on pine cones. The grass and pine cones were gathered by the chef in the local woods.
Another popular restaurant is Gastronomika. It boasts breathtaking views of the city's skyline.
During the summertime, the restaurant opens its large terrace, so guests can enjoy the summer sun.
The restaurant's menu offers a large variety of European and Asian dishes.
During the FIFA World Cup, Gastronomika will be providing VIP catering services. Some dishes developed for the tournament will also be available to regular restaurant guests too.
The thinking behind the restaurant's World Cup menu was to create several dishes suitable for enjoying with beer - a popular beverage among football fans, to say the least.
One English-influenced dish includes deep-fried fish and chips. A Russian-themed dish includes pickles and fried pelmeni (dumplings).
