2015 GIS Day Nov.18 at the Gulf Gate Public Library
Sarasota County will participate in GIS Day on Nov. 18, in conjunction with Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 15-21) The free, public event will be from 1-5 p.m. at the new Gulf Gate Library in Sarasota.
On a national scale, GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. More than 80 countries will participate in holding local events such as corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos, school assemblies and more.
GIS Day is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, and University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and ESRI.

Fruitville Library Reading Garden
The Fruitville Public Library is located just east of I-75 Exit 210/Fruitville Rd. at 100 Coburn Rd. This 25,000 square foot public facility is designed to offer residents of eastern Sarasota County and Lakewood Ranch all the conveniences of a state-of-the art, full-service library.
While offering all the services of a traditional library, Fruitville Library also offers some library services on-line or by phone. The library has a comprehensive collection of books, magazines, newspapers, tapes, CDs, DVDs and e-books. All for your enjoyment during regular library hours or in the comfort of your own home. We also offer the use of 25 user-friendly computers with internet access. There are ongoing educational and recreational programs as well as arts and crafts workshops for all ages.
The younger group love our Children's section with it's kid-friendly decor and an amazing list of programs and activities from which to choose. The parents really enjoy this area and its activities too.
Teens also have their own space designed for them with a focus on comfortable seating and all the current books chosen just for them.
As you enter the library proper, to the left is the Friends Bookstore. This wonderful little gem is run by the Friends of the Fruitville Public Library, a not for profit organization. You can purchase used media of all kinds, even jig saw puzzles, for really low prices. All proceeds support programs, collections and educational events emanating from the Fruitville Public Library.

FYI Gulf Gate Library Groundbreaking Event 2013
Sarasota County Commissioners, Library staff and the Friends of the Gulf Gate Library broke ground on the new Gulf Gate Library building during an event held on September 6th. The new Gulf Gate Library construction is expected to be finished and the facility ready for business in the Fall of 2014.

Crystal Ball Sarasota Library Fundraiser
The Sarasota Selby Public Library was the location for the 3rd Annual Crystal Ball Fundraiser. The Friends of the Selby Library put on this casual fundraiser featuring local restaurants, a variety of entertainers and artists to support the library. This event had something for everyone - with music from pop to jazz, ballroom dancers, fire dancing, belly dancing and magic. Foodies enjoyed tasty bites from numerous local chefs.
