Longtime Customers Mourn Loss of Historic S.F. Department Store Gump's on Its Final Day
For 157 years, Gump's department store has been an institution and, for generations of San Franciscans, it was part of a beloved holiday tradition. On Sunday, the institution and the tradition came to an end. Devin Fehely reports. (12-23-2018)

San Francisco - Scott McKenzie
San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair) is a song, written by John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, and sung by Scott McKenzie. It was written and released in June 1967 to promote the Monterey Pop Festival.
McKenzie's song became an instant hit. The lyrics tell the listeners, If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair. Due to the difference between the lyrics and the actual title, the title is often quoted as San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair). San Francisco reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, and was number one in the United Kingdom and most of Europe. The single is purported to have sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The song is credited with bringing thousands of young people to San Francisco, California during the late 1960s.[citation needed]
In Central Europe, young people adopted San Francisco as an anthem for freedom, and it was widely played during Czechoslovakia's 1968 Prague Spring uprising against Soviet rule.[citation needed]
The song has been featured in several films, including Frantic, The Rock and Forrest Gump (Wikipedia).

Dover Traction Elevators-Gumps-San Francisco, CA
Here are some interesting older Dover elevators, probably Traflomatics. The cabs are really nice and I'm glad these are still original. The floor passing chime is different than most and I like the directional chimes. Also, the slamming doors are a nice touch. Cool elevators!

Pier 39, San Francisco, California
Pier 39 is one of San Francisco's most famous attractions. This shopping belt is built on a pier and is home to the world famous California Sea Lions. It has numerous souvenir shops (including some very quirky ones) and an equal number of seafood restaurants (and other snack stalls) all catering to tourists from near and far. It also has an aquarium, Aquarium by the Bay, for lovers of sea critters out there.
When I was there in the summer, there was just one rather large sea lion basking in the sun as the sea lion population declines during the summer months. You can view the sea lion webcam courtesy of Pier 39 here:
Pier 39 makes a fun walk for the family or for couples to discover all things tacky or quirky.
