Italy: Religious counter-protesters march against Gay Pride parade in Rome
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
A group of religious counter-demonstrators marched in Rome on Saturday as thousands celebrated the Gay Pride Parade.
Under the slogan ‘Act of public restoration against Gay Pride’, religious counter-protesters prayed together at Piazza del Popolo.
We ask forgiveness for these sins, as written also in the act of reparation of the sacred heart of Jesus and first of all we repair our sins and then theirs ... it is only a visual question and also a question of erroneous ideology of one's own body, said spokesperson for the San Filippo Neri Committee, who took part in the counter-demonstration.

If there's a gay centric section of Rome, this street is it. Nestled by the Colosseum you'll find My Bar and Coming Out and hundreds of local and visiting gays walking the streets, drinking, laughing, and checking each other out. It was quite fun!

ITALY: ROME: GAY PRIDE MARCH
Italian/Eng/Nat
World Pride 2000 ended with a flourish on Saturday as tens of thousands marched to the Colosseum in what amounted to a victorious coming-out parade for Italy's gay community.
Gays from all over the world joined their Italian counterparts, jubilant as they tooted whistles and bore banners and signs proclaiming gay pride.
In flamboyant costumes with see-through fishnet outfits a favourite, the parade was a merry, jubilant affair.
Among the marchers was a soberly dressed provincial priest marching in solidarity with an event the Vatican tried to have cancelled.
Reverend Vitaliano Della Sala estimated that 200-thousand people were marching.
People came to Rome for the parade on Saturday on charter buses from Florence, Milan and Bologna or by train or car, joining the tens of thousands already in Rome for the week-long festival.
Many supporters came from other countries just to support the parade.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
First of all I was on vacation and second of all, we are here to stand up for our rights and make our voices known because it is for the world, the world needs to know we are all working for the same cause.
SUPER CAPTION: Gay pride participator
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I don't see so many drag queens and I am very sorry about that. I wish there were more transsexuals and drag queens, they are the cutting edge of our community, they are the leaders and I am happy to be here, it is a really important demonstration.
SUPER CAPTION: Gay pride participator
The parade marked the end of an international event opposed by the Vatican, the Italian right, conservative Catholics and neo-fascists.
The first such event in Italy, World Pride became a watershed for the gay community and one of the most highly politicized international gay pride events in recent memory.
It put gay issues on the political agenda of a country where don't ask, don't tell had long prevailed.
Marchers said that the parade was just one event and that the issue of gays should be accepted generally.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
I hope there is not only a Saturday and Sunday for gays, but also a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and for the whole year and forever. Unfortunately people just look at this event only for the colours but that is not really what is important, it is important to change the sensibility towards gay people with intelligence and to grow all together.
SUPER CAPTION: Supporter
The week passed without the confrontations the Vatican said it feared between gays and religious pilgrims visiting Rome for the Holy Year.
Supporters from other European countries came to Rome in order to make a point of the Italian difficulties.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
To support the homosexuals here in Rome because I know it is still a problem so I want to be here to support it, in Holland it is much easier, in Rome it is difficult.
SUPER CAPTION: Supporter
The festival's international organizers chose Rome for World Pride 2000 in hopes of provoking a dialogue with the church.
But only a few dissident priests took part in the World Pride roundtables and conferences.

The Gay Street (Italian: Gay Street di Roma) is an area in Rome, Italy designated as a gay- and lesbian-friendly neighborhood. A 300-metre shopping and bar area in the center of the city on Via San Giovanni in Laterano, a street leading to the east flank of the Colosseum, it was formally designated in 2007. The opening ceremonies, led by the Italian LGBT organization Arcigay, were attended by celebrities and national and municipal politicians.

LGBT Emperors of Ancient Rome
Happy Saturnalia (December 17th, 2019)!!!!
Please consider supporting me at and help me make more fascinating videos!
In Ancient Greece and the Roman empire homosexual relationships were an accepted and common practice. In this hyper-masculine society the male form was revered for its physical perfection while women’s virtue was jealously guarded to ensure the legitimacy of children. In Greece romantic and sometimes sexual relationships between older and younger men was seen as an initiation rite. The Romans modeled themselves after Greece in most things but had strong feelings that a roman citizen should always play the dominant, never submissive role in a homosexual relationship. Prominent citizens sought out enslaved men, prostitutes, and entertainers to fulfill their sexual desires. Enslaved boys would sometimes be castrated in an attempt to keep them docile and immature for the pleasure of their dominant male lover. Though uncommon, marriages between men were not unheard of in ancient Rome. They included many of the traditional elements of a wedding including a dowry and the man acting as the bride would wear a veil. Here are the stories of 8 Emperors of Rome whose preference for the masculine form was particularly renown.
Julius Caesar (100 - 44 BC)
Tiberius (42 BC - 37 AD)
Nero (37 - 68 AD)
Galba (3BC-69AD)
Domitian (51-96 AD)
Hadrian (76 – 138 AD)
Elagabalus (204 - 222 AD)
Constans (323 - 350 AD)

Rome's Gay Pride 2013 gets underway
Rome's annual Gay Pride has gotten underway with calls for equal rights and same sex marriage. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex revellers joined the parade which carried with it a serious message; a call for equal rights and same sex marriage. The issue of gay rights is controversial in Italy and the Vatican have criticised the event in the past.
It is estimated that 40,000 people took part in this years' event. Report by Jane Witherspoon.

Mario Merz: Igloos / Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan (Italy)
The current exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, Italy, is dedicated to a crucial body of works in Italian artist Mario Merz's oeuvre, the igloos. Mario Merz conceived the first igloo for a group exhibition in Rome in 1968 and since then produced igloos in various sizes and materials until his death in 2003. The igloo for Mario Merz is a metaphor of the place and space inhabited by humans. His igloos are often made of a metal frame covered in fragments of materials such as clay, glass, stone, jute, and metal.
The exhibition Mario Merz: Igloos at Pirelli HangarBicocca presents over 30 igloos of various sizes and materials, arranged in chronological order (1968-2003). The show is curated by Vicente Todolí in collaboration with Fondazione Merz and runs until February 24, 2019.
