2010 - 7 - Haute Route
The third hike of the great mountain binge of 2010. After Mont Blanc I was hungry for more high level walking and decided to have a stab at the Haute Route, a long distance trail from Chamonix in France to Zermatt in Switzerland. However, as I had already done the section from Chamonix to Champex as part of the Tour du Mont Blanc I decided to pick up the trail in Verbier:
Also, I didn't thru-hike it continuously like the other hikes but skipped some low level valley sections by hitch-hiking down the valley. By this point, I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to do: namely spend as much time above the tree line next to the snow and ice as possible. So this is my Haute Route smorgasbord... so to speak.

Italy High Level route in 60 seconds by Mountain Guide Andy Perkins
A simply unbeatable walking holiday, adventure trekking high in the Swiss-Italian Alps with easy climbing to Alpine summits.
This fantastic walking and climbing holiday begins with an afternoon of Alpine glacier skills training at the Gandegg Hut above Zermatt, in the shadow of the iconic Matterhorn. The Breithorn (4164m) is our first climbing objective, before trekking the long descent into Italy's picturesque Valle di Gressoney. Walking back up to the lively Gnifetti Refuge, high on the south side of Monte Rosa, sets us up for one of the finest of all trekking days in the Italian Alps, traversing the Lisjoch/Colle del Lys into Switzerland.
Depending on conditions, we will also make the straightforward ascent Ludwigshohe (4342m) before bringing this fantastic high level route to a conclusion with a descent into Zermatt. With an overnight at the Monte Rosa Alpine Hut, a little oasis of green amongst the towering giants of the Swiss-Italian frontier ridge. Alpine walking and straightforward climbing doesn't get any better than this!

Haute Route
The Haute Route, is the name given to a route undertaken on foot or by ski touring between Chamonix in France and Zermatt in Switzerland.
First charted as a summer mountaineering route by members of the English Alpine Club in the mid-19th century, the route takes around 12+ days walking for the 180 km from the Chamonix valley, home of Mont Blanc, to Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn. Originally dubbed The High Level Route in English by members of the hiking club, the term was translated into French when first successfully undertaken on skis in 1911. Since then the French term has prevailed. While the term haute route has become somewhat genericized for any of the many multi-day, hut-to-hut alpine tours, the Chamonix-Zermatt Haute Route remains the original.

Around the Mont Blanc in France. A short 4K Drone Video | Monte Bianco
The Mont Blanc mountain range filmed in 4K at sunset on the French side, before the famous Mont Blanc tunnel (Traforo del Monte Bianco) crossing the border to Italy.
Mont Blanc / Italian: Monte Bianco meaning White Mountain) is the highest mountain in the Alps and the highest in Europe west of the Caucasus peaks of Russia and Georgia. It rises 4,808 m (15,774 ft) above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence. The mountain stands in a range called the Graian Alps, between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Savoie and Haute-Savoie, France. The location of the summit is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the valleys of Montjoie, and Arve in France, in the middle of what is generally considered to be the border between the two countries.
The Mont Blanc massif is popular for outdoor activities like hiking, climbing, trail running and winter sports like skiing, and snowboarding.
The three towns and their communes which surround Mont Blanc are Courmayeur in Aosta Valley, Italy; and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, France. The latter town was the site of the first Winter Olympics. A cable car ascends and crosses the mountain range from Courmayeur to Chamonix, through the Col du Géant. The 11.6 km Mont Blanc Tunnel, constructed between 1957 and 1965, runs beneath the mountain and is a major trans-Alpine transport route.

Backpacking the Haute Route in 9 Days! - Chamonix, France to Zermatt, Switzerland
Brévent Chamonix 2016
Filmed on Wednesday 17th February 2016
Although the Brévent ski station is the closest to the centre of Chamonix. The hill from Chamonix centre to the bottom station is deceptively steep to walk up, especially in ski boots. The easiest way up is to catch the free bus.
The new Gondola make the journey quick and usually queue free and on the day I filmed took me above the couds that draped Chamonix at a lower altitude.
It is well worth taking the extra Gondola to Brévent itself. I had last been their on the final leg of the Tour du Mont Blanc in the previous Summer and it was amazing to see the barren rocky landscape transformed by metres of snow.
The view from the top is equally amazing Summer and Winter and food for the soul... well worth taking a few moments to appreciate life. While the run from Brévent to Plan Praz is marked as Black it is in reality a reasonable meandering track well within the capabilities of most skiers.
The remainder of the area consists of five or six blue and red runs, and one black run including some mogulled sections of varying slope... good for practice. The expanse means it seldom feels crowded and combined with the sunshine on its southern aspect makes it a good area for an enjoyable morning's skiing.
TheLiaison Gondola connecting Brévent and Flégère makes it possible to ski one area in the morning and the other in an afternoon, which I did.

Travelling hut to hut or bothies as they are called in the UK is becoming a very popular way to travel in the hiking community. Gone are the days were you will be carrying everything you need for a backpacking adventure, as long as you make it to the hut in time you can have a nicely cooked meal and a good-ish bed to sleep on for the night and in most cases a nice log fire to keep you warm or to dry your kit.
So as its the start of a new year it only seems right that we talk about 5 of the best hut to hut trails for 2019.

Argentiere | Chamonix Valley | DJI Phantom 3
Filmed in July 2016 in Argentiere; one of the larger villages near the top of the Chamonix Valley in France. Like most of the towns and villages in the Chamonix Valley, Argentiere has it's own ski area (called Grand Montets) which is the highest area in the Chamonix valley; up to 3,300 metres above sea level. It also has rail links to Chamonix, France and also to Martigny, Switzerland.
Filmed using a DJI Phantom 3. Edited using Premiere Pro CC.

3 Spectacular Hikes in Chamonix (Lac Blanc, La Jonction, Emosson Dam)
Chamonix is a picturesque town in the French Alps, at the base of Mont Blanc.
Surrounded by dramatic mountains, glaciers, lush meadows and alpine forests, it is a paradise for walkers, hikers, runners, climbers, photographers... anyone who likes the outdoors.
This short video features 3 of the most spectacular hikes / walks in the Chamonix Valley:
- Lac Blanc: A beautiful lake that sits high above the valley, directly across from the Mont Blanc Massif.
- La Jonction: The spectacular ridge between two huge glaciers which flow from Mont Blanc: The Bossons and The Taconnaz.
- Emosson Dam. This walk ventures into Switzerland to the hugely impressive dam, complete with icy blue lakes and the Dinosaur Tracks (prehistoric footprints dating back to a time when much larger animals used to hike around the valley!)
Chamonix Valley is without question the most beautiful place I have ever visited and all the hikes depicted in this video I thoroughly recommend. Just be aware - the walks do involve walking on steep, uneven ground, and some of the climbs are very strenuous. La Jonction is particularly demanding. Other hikes (like Lac Blanc) can be shortened by using the extensive network of cable cars that operate in the valley.
Because of its location (Chamonix is 1,000m above sea level) many of the walks are above 2,000m and, as such, snow can be present for much of the year. Generally, the best time for hiking is July to mid-September.
The guidebook I used to plan the walks was: 'Mont Blanc Walks' by Hilary Sharp (Cicerone). I thoroughly recommend it.

Haute Route 2009 - Chamonix to Zermatt
In april of 2009 I was able to do the famous Haute Route backcountry ski trip, from Chamonix to Zermatt in the Alps. Two guides from the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix escorted 10 clients from France, America, and Japan through 6 days of fun.
