Ireland Sligo Ballysadare / Beltra Memories, Molly Ellis - Historic Landscape Scenery
In 1999 my brother Mark recorded our grandmother Mary 'Molly' Ellis (formerly Glenn) talking about her experiences of living across rural Ireland, through good times and bad, in remarkable detail. Her recall of names, places and events at 83 years of age was amazing. This 7 minute film is one of several that will be produced and relates to her mother's family in the area of Beltra, County Sligo. Featured is scenery in and around the Church Of Ireland in this tiny townland where some of the Black family she speaks of are buried. In those days (circa 1918) the church was a community focal point, a way for people to meet and develop long term relationships as well as exchange news from the locality and further afield.
Reaching an age of 89, Molly Ellis was a woman of remarkable fortitude and faith. She lived through the dramatic events of Partition, the Second World War and the Troubles of N Ireland - always with her enduring Christian faith and doing much interdenominational work between the churches, good relations which had characterised her family and ancestors for centuries.
