Saving the Liberty Theater, Pagosa Springs Colorado
The historic Liberty Theater, located in the heart of downtown Pagosa Springs, was rebuilt in 1919 following a fire, and has been showing movies ever since to appreciative Pagosa audiences. The theater faces a technological crisis, however. Movie distribution is slated to become completely digital in the coming months, and the Liberty Theater's 70-year-old projector and (slightly more modern) sound equipment will need to be completely replaced to accommodate the new digital format.

-Please don't judge us mommy's. We don't get out and away from the kids often but when we do, we go CRAZY! Backseat car singing and karaoke. Silly voices and noises. 50 state challenge, where we forgot a few states- please don't judge us! We'll teach our kids better than that. Maybe it was the Colorado high altitude getting to our brains. Visited the hot springs where the temperature was 110 degrees in the pools. IT WAS HOT WATER. Beautiful mountain views. To die for spa for relaxation and fun. We highly recommend visiting there one day soon.

2011 Guinness World Records Event - The Springs Resort, Pagosa Springs (HD)
The World’s Deepest Geothermal Hot Spring event took place Saturday, August 20th, 2011 at The Springs Resort. The festive event, which was open to the public, included dancing by the Southern Ute Heritage Dancers.
The Mother Spring has been measured at a remarkable 1,002 feet in depth. The Mother Spring feeds mineral water to 23 soaking pools at The Springs Resort. The water from the Mother Spring is approximately 144 degrees. The springs draw their name from the Native American Ute tribes who discovered their therapeutic and healing qualities. Pagosa is derived from the native term “Pag Osah,” which is said to mean healing waters. The Springs Resort & Spa host more than 150,000 visitors annually.
Amanda Mochan, Adjudications Manager, Guinness World Records, will travel to Pagosa Springs to certify that the Mother Spring is the deepest geothermal hot spring in the world. After she confirms the depth of the Mother Spring, she will present the award to Owners Keely Whittington and Nerissa Whittington.

Drilling for Electricity in Pagosa Springs Colorado, Part Two
The problems at the drilling site, located across Highway 84 from the Archuleta County Road and Bridge offices, had to due with hitting artesian water. As we mentioned yesterday, drilling company DOSECC Exploratory Services had been hired by local alternative energy company Pagosa Verde LLC to produce maybe 2,000 feet of geologic core samples at each of six exploratory sites. Each drilled well would then be utilized by geologists to run a series of temperate and sonic tests, with the idea of understanding the composition of the rocks underlying this particular area of Archuleta County — thinking that, maybe, this understanding will then lead Pagosa Verde and the Pagosa Area Water and Power Authority to find the Holy Grail of Geothermal Water. That is to say, water that is hotter than 250 degrees, hot enough to run an electric turbine. Thus producing low cost electricity. Except that it might cost $26 million or so to find the water, and built an innovative power plant to utilize it.
At any rate, the DOSECC drilling team did not want to hit water — hot or otherwise. They just wanted to collect core samples going down maybe 1,500 into the Pre-Cambrian Basement. The unexpected water only made the drilling operation more complicated. In this video, we can hear geologist Paul Morgan describe the importance of the Pre-Cambrian Basement — a layer of rock that exhibits very few fossils, making it difficult to date with any accuracy. Here in Archuleta County, the rocks exhibit a non-conformity. Geologists have noted, in core samples, that the upper layers of rock are Cretaceous and Jurassic rocks, dating back to maybe 500 million years. And then suddenly we hit the Pre-Cambrian basement, which is estimated at maybe 1.5 billion years. A billion years' worth of geologic layers are inexplicably missing.
But the important point, says Mr. Morgan, is that Pagosa's geothermal waters are being heated to high temperatures in fractures found at the Pre-Cambrian level. Or at least, that's the current belief. The Pre-Cambrian Basement is where Mr. Morgan, and other geothermal geologists, believe Pagosa Verde LLC will find the Holy Grail.
The historical stories preserved by the Indian tribes of southwestern Colorado suggest that the Pagosa Hot Springs — a small collection of highly mineralized artesian springs bubbling up from the ground at about 145 degrees — was visited occasionally for healing or ceremonial purposes, but none of the tribes established settlements in the immediate area of the springs. The Utes named the area Pah Gosa — Pah meaning Water and Gosa meaning Has a Bad Smell.
When the mineral springs were discovered by European-American explorers and settlers, they were recognized for their therapeutic spa potential. For the next century, Pagosa Springs was a timbering and ranching community that happened to have hot springs; tourism was not a large part of the economy. Nor was alternative energy. Following the energy crisis of the early 1970s, however, the U.S. government formed a new federal agency, designated as the Department of Energy.
A few years ago, another group of business folks and government leaders began discussing the expansion of Pagosa's geothermal services, on the assumption that there's a lot more hot water under the ground than anyone has yet located. To assure the protection of the existing geothermal users, a series of monitoring devices were installed on the existing wells, and the Colorado School of Mines was invited to Pagosa to do a couple of geologic surveys.
Those surveys and some persuasive salesmanship by local business people have led to an investment of about $6.5 million, from the Department of Energy, the state of Colorado, and local governments, to fund the first stage of exploration. Is there really a vast pool of untapped hot water below Pagosa Springs? Or is this a geothermal dream?

Glenwood Hot Springs Pool Colorado USA
Visit The Glenwood Hot Springs Pool
The source of the Glenwood Hot Springs' mineral water is the Yampah spring which produces over 3 million gallons of water per day at a temperature of 122°F. It is one of the hottest springs in the world. Before it enters Glenwood Hot Springs’ two pools, the water is cooled down to 104°F for the resort’s hot tub-like Therapy Pool and it’s cooled down even further to the bathwater-warm temperature of between 90° - 93°F for the gigantic main pool.
Soaking in or “taking the waters” is a time-honored healing tradition, and one that is still recommended as a remedy for a variety of ailments. In fact, members of the nomadic Ute tribe were the earliest known people to soak in the healing hot springs which retains the original Ute language name “Yampah,” which translates to “Big Medicine.”
A Natural Hot Springs Pool For The Whole Family
Swimming, soaking, playing and splashing in the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is an iconic Glenwood Springs experience any time of year. The “big” pool, as it’s referred to, contains over 1 million gallons of water and is an aquatic playing field for kids of all ages. There is plenty of room to spread out and play catch or relax on an inflatable. There is even a lap lane and diving area. The Therapy Pool is Glenwood Hot Springs’ version of a hot tub. At 100 feet X 40 feet, it’s significantly smaller than the big pool, but still massive in scale compared to any hot tub. Its size and hotter temperature make it the perfect place for splash-free soaking. The Therapy Pool is also outfitted with bubble chairs and submerged benches that offer visitors still more ways to relax.
During the warm weather months, Glenwood Hot Springs Pool operates two water slides. The Shoshone Chute is a body slide, while riders on the Avalanche Falls slide use inner tubes for their descent. Both slides feature a 47-foot drop which deposits riders into a separate pool overseen by lifeguards. For those looking for a break from the summer heat, pull up a lounge chair under one of the property’s giant poplar trees or relax beneath the newly built shade pergolas. A restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating serves breakfast and lunch, as well as an assortment of snacks and beverages including beer and wine. Ice cream cones and shaved ice with flavor bursts are a favorite treat for the younger set. For some sun-free afternoon fun, guests can play a round or two of mini-golf at the resort’s miniature golf course. Additionally you can find plenty of other fun things to do in Glenwood Springs!
