The Mafia Is Trashing Italy... Literally (Part 1)
In the city of Naples, Italy, the Mafia has controlled the waste-management industry for decades -- dumping and burning trash across its rolling hills and vineyards. In 1994, the European Union declared the situation an official environmental emergency, and things have only gotten worse since then. When we investigated the situation we found mutated sheep, poisoned mozzarella, alarming rates of cancer, and pissed off farmers ready to push back against the Camorra, Italy's most powerful and dangerous criminal organization (and the government that enables it).

TRAVEL VLOG: Rome, Italy
During our time in Rome, Italy we visited the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, learned about the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary, ate lots of gelato and pizza, and visited Vatican City.
**Unfortunately on the last night my laptop was stolen from my backpack after leaving it in the luggage room of our hostel, and both of our debit cards were hacked from using a scammed ATM machine, so it's just a reminder to stay alert while traveling.**

Rome's rubbish crisis sparks warning from doctors
(26 Jun 2019) Doctors in Rome are warning of possible health hazards caused by overflowing garbage bins in the city streets, as the Italian capital struggles with a renewed emergency aggravated by the summer heat.
Rubbish disposal is a decades-long problem for the Eternal City.
Rome was left with no major site to treat the 1.7 million metric tons of garbage it produces every year since the Malagrotta landfill was closed in 2013.
Successive mayors from different parties have all proved incapable of solving the city's garbage emergency, which has re-emerged dramatically since Mayor Virginia Raggi of the populist 5-Star Movement took the helm three years ago.
Raggi's administration is facing frustration and anger from both tourists and Romans over the trash piles that threaten health and tarnish the city's image.
Residents complain that there aren't enough garbage bins or they are broken, and that the smell is terrible.
We've become the third, fourth world in my opinion. There are no solutions. I don't understand. Mrs. Raggi (Mayor of Rome) should take a small stroll here once and a while said Rossana Franza, a Rome resident.
Animals like dogs, cats, rats or even birds like seagulls pose a serious health risks as they root around in garbage and spread bacterial infections through their faeces or urine, Dr. Roberto Volpe from the National Research Council CNR told the Associated Press.
Volpe also discouraged angry citizens from setting garbage piles on fire, saying that could cause greater health risks through dioxin contamination, which can lead to cancer.
Tourists and Romans alike are forced to weave their way between overflowing garbage bins that now appear even next to the Coliseum, symbol of the Eternal City.
Officials in Rome, who are often at odds over the possible solutions to the constant waste emergency, all agree on one thing: the garbage problem can't be addressed with short-term measures.
Let's be honest ... no waste plan can solve a problem aggravated by 60 years of mismanagement in one year, said Marco Cacciatore, president of the local commission for environmental and city politics in Rome.
Let's tell the truth to citizens: We are human. This difficult infrastructural situation cannot be resolved in the short term.
