The eruption of Crystal Geyser - Green River - Utah LeAw in the USA //Ep.35
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 35th episode, we visit and experience the eruption of Crystal Geyser at Green River in Utah. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Crystal Geyser is located on the east bank of the Green River approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 km) downstream from Green River, Utah, United States. It is a rare example of a cold-water carbon dioxide driven geyser; geothermal activity does not play a role in the activity of the geyser. The ground water near the geyser has significant quantities of dissolved carbon dioxide, along with substantial underground gas accumulations in the surrounding area. Saturation of the aquifer with CO2 creates enough pressure to force groundwater through the geyser and out on to the surface.
The geyser erupts sometimes to a height of 130 feet (40 m) or more. During 2005, a study of the timing of the eruptions found them to be bimodal. About 66% of eruptions in the study occurred about 8 hours after the previous eruption, and the rest about 22 hours after. The geyser erupts for an average of one hundred minutes a day, with eruptions either lasting 7–32 minutes, or 98–113 minutes. The bimodal distribution of eruptions is not a well-understood pattern, but is found in other geysers, both cold-water and otherwise.
Between eruption events, the water level is approximately seventeen feet below the surface of the geyser—at the level of the water table. In the preface to an eruption, water surfaces, fills the pond around the geyser, and begins to bubble. Bubbling events occur with increasing frequency in the time leading up to an eruption, but are not constant; bubbling events last for a few minutes, with a few minutes of calm in between. Bubbling events at the main geyser also frequently alternate with bubbling events at natural side-pools.
The current form of the geyser was created by an exploration well drilled in 1935 in attempt to locate oil. The well was originally 2,600 feet (790 m) deep, but an earlier owner of the land partially filled it in, meaning that the well is now only a couple hundred metres deep.
The area surrounding the modern geyser is covered in a thick layer of orange travertine. Near the river, adjacent to the modern orange travertine, are substantial deposits of white travertine, perhaps reflecting the original depositional environment of the geyser (before the exploratory well was drilled.)
The first written record of Crystal Geyser comes from the report of the Powell Geographic Expedition of 1869, July 13, 1869.

Hidden Valley Hike- Ogden UT
Mid-November hike on the Hidden Valley trail. I started at the 22nd Street trailhead and followed the signs up the Indian Trail. The tricky part is the right hand turn about .5 miles up the trail. IT IS NOT MARKED. So be careful or you will miss it. You will recognize it from the stone steps seen in the video footage.

Tropical Oasis in the Desert?! Best Hike in Moab (Full Time RV Life)
We found HAWAII in the DESERT!!! What?! We were just as surprised as you are! A local recommended a hike down Mill Creek Road that was dog friendly - say no more - that hooked us! We had no idea what to expect! About 20 minutes into some treacherous terrain followed by a long trail of beach sand with tall, red canyon walls surrounding us, we came upon the most beautiful swim hole with a water fall! Easily one of our FAV places we experienced on our trip across the US! Comment and let us know what you think about this tropical oasis in thee middle of Moab desert!
Pucker Pass and Long Canyon
Pucker Pass on the Long Canyon Road. Often used as a short cut between Dead Horse Point SP and Moab coming out at the Jug Handle on the Potash Road. Somewhat rough, not for low riding sports cars. If you have a regular pick up, 2WD or better this is a beautiful and not very long trip outside of Moab. One person described this road as very dangerous (they were driving a Dodge Magnum R/T). If you take your time to enjoy the beauty you will be safe a rewarded by the Beautiful Scenery. I drove it both ways in my 97 Jeep TJ Wrangler in May, 2014.
Valley Of The Gods - Vanlife Offroad - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.28
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 28th episode, we drive all the 17-mile dirt and gravel road of the Valley of the Gods.
Valley of the Gods is a scenic backcountry area is southeastern Utah, near Mexican Hat. It is a hidden gem with scenery similar to that of nearby Monument Valley. Valley of the Gods offers isolated buttes, towering pinnacles and wide open spaces that seem to go on forever.
Monument Valley is located on Navajo Nation land and visitors exploring the area usually travel with a Navajo guide. A permit from the tribe is needed before you can hike into the backcountry. Valley of the Gods offers similar scenery without the tribal restrictions; it is located on BLM land and is open for hiking, backpacking and camping.
There are no designated trails or campgrounds, but there is plenty of backcountry where you can wander and explore.
A 17-mile dirt and gravel road winds through the valley. It is sandy and bumpy, with steep sections. It provides a fun drive through an area that is usually deserted. It is a great place to get away from civilization - to get away from everything associated with modern life.
Bike enthusiasts enjoy riding the road through the valley.
Because of its isolated nature, people exploring Valley of the Gods need to be self-sufficient and carry emergency supplies. There are no facilities, no gas stations, stores or services. You may or may not see other travelers along the road.
The Valley of the Gods Road runs between Highways 163 and 261. The road forks away from Hwy 163 about 7.5 miles north of Mexican Hat. It winds north and west and then connects with Hwy 261 about 6.5 miles northwest of the point where Hwy 261 forks from Hwy 161.
The road is recommended for high clearance vehicles. During dry weather, many people drive the road in family cars - but be advised that it can be rough. When the weather is wet a 4X4 may be needed to get through.
The western end of the Valley of the Gods road connects with Hwy 261 just below what is known as the Moki Dugway. (The Moki Dugway is section of very tight switchbacks that allow Hwy 261 to climb the cliff face to the top of Cedar Mesa.)
As a side note, the scenic area has appeared in a couple TV shows. The 1984-1987 CBS show Airwolf used a mesa in Valley of the Gods as the secret hiding place of the super-helicopter Airwolf. And two episodes of the BBC science fiction TV show Doctor Who were filmed in The Valley of the Gods.

Hidden Canyon Overlook Moab UT
Hidden Canyon Overlook is situated northwest of Moab, Utah. This off-road trail is part of the '3D Safari Route', and gives an impression of being deep in the outback. It traverses dirt and sand, and then broad expanses of exposed bedrock or 'slickrock'. Hidden Canyon Overlook culminates approximately 500 feet above a slot canyon known as 'Hidden Canyon' which features red and white sandstone contrasted to blue sky and green vegetation. With the snow-capped La Sal Mountains in the distant east, this place is a visual spectacle to cherish.

Snow Canyon | Hidden Pinyon Trail
One of our favorite hikes in Snow Canyon is the Hidden Pinyon Trail. It is a fairly short, 1 1/2 mile loop that at points, is slightly strenuous as you hike up to the top and over some sand and and sharp lava rock. The trail is rocky and uneven for most of the way and you end up back at the paved bike trail.
