I’m sure you’re already aware of the Mafia, thanks to The Godfather or Martin Scorsese films. But I hate to break this to you, The Godfather and Martin Scorsese films aren’t exactly all that historical. So first of all, the media and law enforcement first used that term Mafia, to describe criminal groups in Sicily. You know, the Mediterranean island in Southern Italy. Or the rock that Italy is kicking. Anyway, Giuseppe Esposito, the first known Sicilian Mafia member to move to the United States, fled to New York City after killing a bunch of politicians and wealthy landowners back in Sicily. Esposito ended up in New Orleans, where, in 1881, detective David Hennessey caught him and sent him back to Italy. By this time, the Sicilian Mafia spread throughout both New Orleans and New York City. They wanted revenge. On October 15, 1890, they found Hennessey, now the superintendent and chief of police, and murdered him, execution style. In response, New Orleans police arrested hundreds of Sicilians, eventually accusing 19 for Hennessey’s murder. However, after a bunch of acquittals and mistrials and rumours the jury had been bribed, an angry mob formed outside the prison. On March 14, 1891, they broke into the prison, dragging out the indicted Sicilian men and killing 11 of them. These killings are perhaps the largest known mass lynching in American history.
After the lynchings, the term “Mafia” now entered the American national dialogue. More Americans had anti-Italian feelings, calling for more restrictions to prevent Italians from immigrating to the country. Oh yeah, and the whole Italian mob stereotype was born.
So how did the Sicilian Mafia evolve into the American Mafia? Well, from the 1890s to the 1920s, the rise and fall of various gangs would lead to their organization. And yes, many of these gangs attracted young, poor, Italian men with ties to Sicily. However, it’s important to point out that not all of these gangs were Italian. For example, the Five Points Gang was mainly made up of Irish Americans. Although, its leader, Paul Kelly, was Italian. Well that’s not a very Italian sounding name, Mr. Beat. Yeah, his real name was Paolo Antonio Vaccarelli. He changed his name so it sounded more Irish. The big rival gang to the Five Points Gang was the Eastman Gang, who were mostly Jewish. Other gangs in the mix in New York City in the early 20th century were the Cherry Hill Gang, White Hand Gang, and the Yakey Yakes. Many of these gangs participated in an extortion racket known as The Black Hand. The name came from gang tactics like sending a letter to someone threatening to kill them or kidnap a loved one unless she or he paid a specified amount of money. These letters often were signed with a hand held up as a gesture of warning, which was usually imprinted with black ink.

Old-Time TOTW #36: Tulsey Waltz (3/3/19)
This week’s tune is Tulsey Waltz, from the playing of James Samuel (J. S.) Price (14 October 1876 – 22 July 1962) of Pottawatomie Co., OK, and is found in Marion Thede’s Fiddle Book. As far as I know, this is the first and only recording of Price's version of tune on the Internet (or anywhere else, for that matter).
James Samuel (J.S.) Price is not a fiddler we hear much about, though he contributed many tunes to Marion Thede’s book, some of which are unique. He was born on 14 October 1876 in Baldwyn, MS to Elizabeth A. Yeager and Joe S. Price. The family moved to Texas in 1883, then to Oklahoma by 1900 (Greer and Beckham counties). Price married Hester Winifred Stringer (1883-1964) on 5 May 1912. His residence in 1930 was Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, OK. Thede mentions Price was a left handed fiddler who strung his fiddle in the conventional manner. She also states “Mr. Price’s violin is a fine old instrument with an Italian coat of arms carved in relief on the back. He makes a wonderful picture, with his white hair, the old violin held in the right hand, and the left bowing arm high in the air when playing on the E string.” I’m glad that Thede took a photo of Price and included it in her book, but how I wish she had included a close up of the back of his fiddle!
Tulsey, or Tulsey Town, refers to the city of Tulsa. I am not sure if these are names locals still use for the city, so if there are any people from Tulsa here, please let me know in the comments below.
Tulsey Waltz shows marked similarities to many popular waltzes of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The waltz song was very popular during that era. This craze lasted approximately two decades and seems to have begun with “Comrades” by Felix McGlennon in 1887. Some that followed were “Daisy Bell” (Harry Dacre, 1892), “The Sidewalks of New York” (Lawlor & Blake, 1894), “Sweet Rosie O’Grady” (Maude Nugent, 1896), “In the Good Old Summertime (Shields & Evans, 1902), and “My Gal Sal (Paul Dresser, 1905). I’d like to point out “Sweet Rosie O’Grady” because it was not very common for a woman to compose popular music in the 1800s, let alone a song that reached the status of what would be considered a “hit” today.
Andrew Kuntz informed me that Tulsa Waltz was written by Howard L. Cawley, fiddler for Jack Cawley's Oklahoma Ridge Runners (Howard Cawley, fiddle; Leonard C. Fulwider, guitar; and Forrest A. Turner, mandolin). They played the tune in D and recorded it in Memphis, Tennessee, in June 1930 for Victor Records. More elaborated versions of the tune were recorded by Lon Johnson (1941) and a home recording by Burrell Reed (year unknown), both found on Larry Warren's Slippery Hill site (slippery-hill.com). None of these versions are identical to the written notation of Price's Tulsey Waltz (including Cawley's), but the shape is there. However, I see the shape/phrasing/overall sound as being a bit of a musical idiom that is found in many of the popular waltz songs I listed above. Although not identical, all of these waltzes sound quite a bit alike and were clearly influenced by one another.
No chords are given in the transcription by Thede (which is not unusual at all), and the melody modulates in ways that most older folk songs do not--an indication of its later origin. The chords we are playing in this video are ones that I set to the melody. I was guided in my chord choices by the walzes listed above, especially “Sweet Rosie O’Grady” and “In the Good Old Summertime” since there were strains in Tulsey Waltz that directly correspond to those songs. The first four bars just cried out to me for a descending bass line, and I think it works very well with the character of the tune.
Tulsey Waltz is in the key of C, but I discovered that I enjoy playing it in cross G tuning (GDGD). I admit, this is rather unusual, but I like the effect of the drones in this tuning as well as the timbre of the fiddle. Price apparently played it in standard tuning (GDAE), which would be much more common and expected.
Joining me are Stephen Rapp on banjo (Kent, OH), and Bill Braun on guitar (Cleveland, OH). This was recorded at a concert we gave at St. Paul’s Episcopal on 16 October 2018.
Subscribe to my YouTube channel and Stay Tuned for the next Old-Time TOTW, a different tune airing each Sunday morning.
Next week I will feature fiddler Amanda Morrison again…see you then!

MVI 1275 - 4th of July 2016 in East Cleveland Ohio
East Cleveland Ohio U.S.A. - While other cities around the United States of America celebrate the birth of this nation things in East Cleveland are unique.
Sure EC has it's share of Barbeque grills and good music being played from Hip Hop on Scioto Ave to live blues on Emily Avenue but this is a day to shout to the whole world about how we are living in East Cleveland Ohio.
The Pièce De Résistance of the whole day is the street to street fireworks and explosion time. Some gun fire goes with the large explosions which go until about 2:00 AM EST.
Another 4th of July celebration goes on this year with very little problems for EC Police and Fire.

Los Angeles: GRAMMY Museum
The GRAMMY Museum is an interactive, educational museum devoted to the history and winners of the Grammy Awards. The Museum has interactive touch-screens, videos, recording booths, and a collection of historical music artifacts including costumes and instruments from the Grammy Awards, hand-written lyrics, records, and audio/video recordings.
In addition to the original in downtown Los Angeles, there is also The Grammy Museum Mississippi in Cleveland, and a Grammy Museum at Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. The Grammy Museum Experience opened in autumn 2017 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The GRAMMY Museum, located in downtown Los Angeles's L.A. Live, opened in December 2008 corresponding to the Grammy Awards' 50th anniversary. The museum consists of four floors, including historical music artifacts displays, interactive instrument stations and recording booths, and a 200-seat Clive Davis Theater.
Since its opening, the GRAMMY Museum has presented over 300 public programs including educational programs for young students.
The GRAMMY Museum features exhibits including: behind-the-scenes live performances, seminars, classes, musician meet-and-greets, and interactive recording booths. The museum starts on the fourth floor and continues down to the third and second floor. The exhibit, Crossroads, on the fourth floor, features touch-screens to view photos and listen to music of all genres. Another interactive exhibit allows the user to go inside six different sound-proof recording booths as famous performers and producers teach about different stages of producing commercial soundtracks. Visitors can record their own singing and rapping track, and remix it to produce a cover of various pop songs. The museum also has outfits worn by Grammy-Award-winning musicians such as Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez, and Rihanna.
The GRAMMY Museum is located in Los Angeles downtown's L.A. Live campus at the corner of Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard. The museum has an Olympic Boulevard address, but the main entrance is on Figueroa Street. Bronze disks for each year's GRAMMY Awards – honoring the top winners, Record of the Year, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year – are embedded in the sidewalks on the streets of LA Live.
The museum opens on Sunday to Thursday from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm and on Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. The Museum is closed on Tuesdays.
