HOA LU ANCIENT CAPITAL | KING DINH TEMPLE - KING LE TEMPLE | NINH BINH ATTRACTIONS
Hoa Lu, the capital of Dai Co Viet (an old name of Vietnam) under the Dinh and Le dynasties bears with it a legend. Being the capital of the first fundamental Government of Vietnam, Hoa Lu witnessed many important historical events: the union of Vietnam after “12 Lords Rebellion”, the war with the Song dynasty, the defense against the ancient Cambodian, and the formation of Hanoi nowadays. With the total size of 13.87 square kilometers, Hoa Lu old capital is an attractive place that history lovers should not miss out.
First and foremost, attractions catching tourists ‘ eyes are temples, where people worship the Emperors and royal people that ruled here more than 1000 years ago: Dinh Tien Hoang Emperor temple, Le Dai Hanh Emperor temple, Phat Kim Princess temple (Phat Kim is a tragic fate daughter of Dinh Tien Hoang Emperor), and the newest one is Ly Thai To Emperor temple, which built in order to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of Hanoi. Besides, Hoa Lu has the four sacred temples of Hoa Lu (Hoa Lu Tu Tran) to worship the Gods of four directions: Quy Minh temple, Thien Ton temple, Cao Son temple and Nguyen temple. Moreover, Hoa Lu also has its own One Pillar Pagoda like the One-Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi, but not to be confused with the one in Hanoi, Hoa Lu One-Pillar Pagoda has a Pillar full of phrase by Buddha in front of it, which stands there more than 1000 years. Along with these temples and pagodas, plenty of monuments, tombs, shrines worship many other famous people and Gods are attractive places as well.
Secondly, Hoa Lu still keeps the remaining of ancients fortress built by Dinh dynasty more than 1000 years ago. The Imperial place lays under the ground for 3m and now become a very interesting place to visit. Tourists will have the chance to see the old items used by the royal family in ancient time. The fortress outside is built based on the natural advantages: the mountain provides good background, the deep valley is a basement, and the rivers supply water for people inside the fortress and would become traps to fight against the enemy in any case. This fortress is a very solid one that can defence against even the strongest enemy for months. On the other hand, inside the fortress is marvelous scenery for photo-taking and sight-seeing. In addition, the ancient town of Hoa Lu can easily capture tourists by its unique aspects.
The last but not least element that impresses visitors to Hoa Lu is the Festival Truong Yen which is held in February and March (Lunar calendar) which includes a chain of events that regain the spirit of the ancients Emperors: the March of Water, the Ritual for Dinh and Le Emperors, the performance of the old times, the Battles of Dinh Tien Hoang when he was a child, Cheo and Tuong performances, and a beauty contest for Hoa Lu women. This Festival brings back the memories of the old times and helps the young people to have a chance to know more about the traditions of their ancestors.
HOA LU ANCIENT CITADEL & TAM COC ROWBOAT JOURNEY, Ninh Binh, Vietnam
In this video we take you to the beautiful and stunning karst landscapes around the busy city of Ninh Binh, located 93 km outside Hanoi city. The three major tourist attractions of Tam Coc,, Hoa Lu and Bich Dong cave pagoda are not far from Ninh Binh city itself and independent travellers can easily include these 3 attractions in a day trip from Ninh Binh.
Hoa Lu was the former capital city of Vietnam during the Dinh and early Le dynasties, over 1000 years ago. Here you can see what remains of the inner citadel, pay a visit to the beautiful Dinh Tien Hoang temple and then visit the tomb of King Dinh by climbing 207 steps to the top of a limestone pinnacle. The surrounding landscape is incredibly scenic and perfect for landscape photography. It's worth exploring the area around the inner citadel of Hoa Lu on foot also.
Tam Coc literally means 'three caves' and the karst scenery here is much like that in Hoa Lu. At Tam Coc, there is a setup in which tourists may hire a local Vetnamese person to row them by boat, deep into this otherwise inaccessible, flooded landscape.
Towering limestone pinnacles rise out of the paddy fields here, emerging from the flooded landscape. The boat rowers tend to alternate between rowing boats with their feet and with their hands. The journey takes about 2 hours and the boat passes through 3 flooded caves (Hang Ca, Hang Hai & Hang Ba).
Mountain goats, white ducks, egrets, kingfishers and other wildlife can be seen during the boat journey. Local fishermen wade through the waters, using equipment to pass electric currents through the water in the hopes of stunning fish.
Bich Dong or 'Jade Grotto' cave pagoda is located just a few kilometres north of Tam Coc. This is a holy site of pilgrimage for the Vietnamese. It's a very interesting pagoda that blocks the entrance of a cave and partially extends back into it. One can enter the actual cave behind the pagoda and explore around inside. Behind the pagoda, there is a way to climb upwards to the top of a limestone pinnacle for spectacular panoramic of the karst landscape.
We highly recommend this destination to anybody who is passing through. We found this to be one of the most inspiring places that we visited throughout our journey through Vietnam and it is definitely not to be missed.

Hoa Lư was the capital of Vietnam in the 10th and 11th centuries. It lies in Truong Yen Thuong village, Hoa Lư District, Ninh Bình Province. The area is one of ricefields broken by limestone mountains, and is approximately 90 km south of Hanoi. Hoa Lư was the native land of the first two imperial dynasties of Vietnam: the Đinh founded by Đinh Tiên Hoàng, and the Early Lê founded by Lê Đại Hành.[1][2] Following the demise of the Lê Dynasty, in 1010 Lý Công Uẩn, the founder of the Lý Dynasty, transferred the capital to Thăng Long (now Hanoi), and Hoa Lư became known as the ancient capital.[3]
The capital at Hoa Lư covered an area of 300 ha (3.0 km2), including both the Inner and Outer Citadels. It included defensive earthen walls, palaces, temples and shrines, and was surrounded and protected by mountains of limestone. Today, the ancient citadel no longer exists, and few vestiges of the 10th century remain. Vietnam's First Capital & Cycling Adventure in Ninh Binh ???????? (English Subtitles)
When getting a chance to visit Hoa Lu ancient capital of Vietnam in Ninh Binh province, visitors in Vietnam tourism should take time to visit Dinh and Le Temples where Kings of Dinh and Le Dynasties are worshiped. These two temples in the shape of Chinese character were built in 17th century.
The mountains and sea combined to make Hoa Lu ancient capital’s picturesque landscape. Hoa Lu lays in a flat valley surrounded by the Trang An lime stone mountains, which form a natural wall protecting the old citadel. The city’s northwest is bordered by the Hoang Long River, the tributaries of which run through the capital, cooling the weather within the city and serving as convenient waterways.
Certainly, you’ll find a lot of Ninh Binh cycling tours on the internet. A quick search reveals that bike trips depart from Hanoi for around 750,000 VND ($32.50/£25) per person. This is for a day trip. For around that price you can also get a dorm room, bicycle hire for 2-days and bus tickets there and back from Hanoi. I’d rather have the time to explore the area than be rushed around on a tour, but it’s a personal thing.

Located just over an hour drive from Hanoi - Ninh Binh was soon developed as the cultural and political center of Vietnam since the reign of Dinh Tien Hoang King in 968 – Its first capital of Hoa Lu is undoubtedly the most attractive site where tourists may find thousands of vestiges of palaces, temples, pagodas and tombs related to the three dynasties of Dinh, Le and Ly.
Other spots you may be interested are Bai Dinh Pagoda – the Buddhist Centre of Vietnam. One remarkable attraction of Ninh Binh is Phat Diem Cathedral - a solemn and interesting architectural complex, reflecting the skillful and excellent stone carving art of the Vietnamese workers.
Every year, on 10th day of the 3rd lunar month, locals come to Hoa Lu and join in Truong Yen festival. Moreover, Its owns beautiful Tam Coc, Bich Dong, Dich Long, Hoa Son, Tien caves, Van Trinh grotto and other special landscapes like Trang An Eco-tourism complex and Cuc Phuong National Park which is also suitable to watch birds, butterflies and orchid.
Hoa Lu - 10th Century Vietnam's ancient capital,Vietnam tour,hanoi tour,hanoi Place to visit,Vietnam
Hoa Lu Citadel is the only thing left of Vietnam's former capital Hoa Lu. Founded in 968, Hoa Lu remained capital until the early 11th century when Emperor Ly Thai To moved it to today's Hanoi. Despite the lack of original buildings, the trip to Hoa Lu is definitely worth it. Arriving in the beautiful mountainous landscape, you walk 300m to the temples of the Dinh and Le Dynasty. They are situated in very beautifully designed parks, not unlike Van Mieu in Hanoi. Frangipani blossoms are literally everywhere, and the air is full of the smell of sweet incense fumes and damp air.
If you have a good guide, you'll be able to learn a lot about the history of Hoa Lu. Our guide was alright, but his English was a catastrophe so that we couldn't understand too much. The only thing that was understandable was his story about Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang. He was murdered by a mandarin who had dreamt of a star falling into his mouth - which he interpreted as a sign that he would be the only real emperor. The statue of Dinh Tien Hoang is found in the temple.
In order to avoid leaving Hoa Lu without a clue about what happened there, grab a good guidebook and ask your guide everything you want to know.
All of the travel agencies and hotels can arrange guided tours to Hoa Lu, usually combined with Tam Coc. The price for a 1-day-tour should be around 20$ per person
