At Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, a multi-year project is underway to reconstruct the physical environment and seasonal work cycle of an early 20th-century family farm in the North Carolina piedmont. Visitors may encounter farm animals of all but vanished breeds once kept on the Hauser Farm or savor old-fashioned apple varieties grown in Horne Creek's heritage apple orchard. You can try your hand at cutting grass with a scythe or listen to a talk on how to cook on a wood stove. Through educational programs ranging from white oak basket making workshops to an annual corn shucking frolic, Horne Creek Living Historical Farm provides a unique opportunity to learn about our rural past.

Horne Creek Farm
Nestled in the hills of Surry County, is the farm where Thomas and Charlotte Hauser raised their twelve children, eleven boys and one girl. By the turn of the century, through good farming and hard work, the Hauser had increased their farm to 450 acres. The farm would stay in the family for four generations of Hausers until 1960 when it was leased to local farmers. In 1970 the state purchased it as part of Pilot Mountain State Park. In 1984 the state decided that it wanted to preserve an example of the way many people farmed the lands at the turn of the century. The Hauser farm was one of the best examples of an early farm and had not truly been developed by the park. It was turned over to the Division of Archives and determined it would be used to create a living museum to depict the life of the farmer. In October of 1987 the state opened it to the public as the Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, an outdoor museum and research center dedicated to the study, preservation, and interpretation of North Carolina's agricultural and rural heritage, circa 1900-1910.

Late 1800s Tobacco Barn
Check out my farmhouse blog at: !
My family and I went to the annual cornshucking in October 2016 at Horne Creek Farm in Pinnacle, North Carolina. This is a short little tour of a late 19th Century tobacco barn.
My mom and I are direct descendants of the founders of Bennett's Welcome, founded in the 1620s in Jamestown, Virginia. Since then, my family has continued farming, especially tobacco. My grandfather's farm was the last of our line. He got out of the tobacco industry in the late 1980s, just before the decline really kicked in. He continued farming food crops on his farm until he passed away. My mother and I continue the longstanding tradition of our family today, albeit with small kitchen gardens instead of acres and acres of fields.
This is just a little glimpse of what generations of folks in rural North Carolina did for a living until recent years.

Slate Run Metro Park
Here in the park is a Living Historical Farm still being ran, but like it was in the late 1800's. Then the rest of the park is open like most metro parks for family fun, picnic time with your other half or just taking the picture on the walking trail.

The Farm at Fort William Historical Park
The Farm provides vegetables and meat for the gentlemen's table as well as provisions for those who inhabit the Fort during the winter season. Cattle, horses, sheep, chickens, and pigs can be found here. Cattle and horses are used to work the fields, move ice to the dairy in the spring, and a variety of other activities. The Farm has a dairy with an ice house beneath it as well as two cottages for the farmers responsible for daily operations. Voyageurs and Ojibwa also assist with seasonal tasks and daily chores such as milking, cleaning out stalls and harvesting in the fall.
