Vienna, Austria Travel - Visit Hundertwasserhaus
A fascinating building that reflects unpredictability and randomness in nature. (Vienna, Austria)
The Hundertwasserhaus is just another residential apartment complex. So why would you be interested? Well, let us take a look. Like other historic cities, Vienna's beauty comes from a traditional historic sense of design. Each historic period had rules about lines and forms and architecture. In the center of town you would not find any buildings that break these rules. Those shapes of course are not found in nature. Hundertwasser thought they created a false illusion of a life separate from the natural world. He wanted to show imperfection and unpredictability in the world, using lines that did not have a straight edge.
That is why the Hundertwasserhaus, his greatest work, is constructed with curved walls, crooked floors, wild colors, and a forest planted on the roof. What is your favorite part? My favorite part actually are the toilets. The toilets? Yes. They are really very modern...very artistic, it is very nice. In the middle of all the history you can still come and visit the Hundertwasserhaus for a little bit of 20th century innovation. I am Daniel Cronin, showing you Vienna.

St. Stephen's Cathedral (more commonly known by its German title: Stephansdom) is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna, Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, OP. The current Romanesque and Gothic form of the cathedral, seen today in the Stephansplatz, was largely initiated by Duke Rudolf IV (1339–1365) and stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first a parish church consecrated in 1147. The most important religious building in Vienna, St. Stephen's Cathedral has borne witness to many important events in Habsburg and Austrian history and has, with its multi-coloured tile roof, become one of the city's most recognizable symbols.

Hundertwasserhaus, designed by Friedrich Hundertwasser and Joseph Krawina, is an exception to Vienna's architectural elegance. But as one of the city's most visited buildings, it fits as a fun departure from anOld World tone.

Fernwärme Wien, Spittelau, Vienna, Austria [Travel with Manfred]
Fernwärme Wien burns the trash of the city of Vienna, heats water by doing so, and the super heated water is pumped in large tubes some 1000km long to offices and residential buildings for heating purposes. A typical thermal waste treatment plant, yes, but from the outside it is a work of art, designed by late famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. He loved to integrate the concept of permaculture into architecture and always added some gold to his designs. This is how industrial sites can look like. Official sites: and and

17. SOUNDBITE: (German) Sonja Schak, Hundertwasserhaus tenant:
If someone doesn't like it anymore, he can paint above it in white so something else can be painted. So it is very flexible, and it is nice because the children are allowed to paint the walls. In normal houses it is forbidden but here it is not only allowed but it is desired that children do that.

21. SOUNDBITE: (German) Niels Kopf, Kunst & Caf owner
Hundertwasser says the 'third skin', he means by that the building environment in which you live has to suit you in your present life situation like your own skin - the baby has a different skin, also in its size, than the adult - or your clothes. So everyone here has the right to paint, to gild, to write on the facade within reach of their arm, even with a long paintbrush as Hundertwasser himself says.

23. SOUNDBITE (German) Niels Kopf, coffeehouse Kunst & Caf owner:
He also requested that each individual has to document itself based on its own evolution and needs, also to influence the laying out of their third skin. And no architect wishes for this, in general.

Well I have to say as a piece of architecture, I don't really like it as a piece of architecture. On the other hand, I think that's fantastic that it exists and somehow he (Hundertwasser) made that transition between being an artist and actually making some buildings.
