Bicycle Tour the Netherlands - Amsterdam to Rotterdam - Family Bike tour - Part 2
In the summer of 2017, our family returned to Europe to do another awesome bike tour. We started in Amsterdam and bicycled 800 km in a circle to Brussels and back to Amsterdam. This part of the bike tour takes us from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. The ride was 75km. This day has us biking the famed LF routes (Landelijke Fietsroutes). The LF routes are cross country bike traveling routes intended for multi-day bicycle tours.

City Cycling - Amsterdam, The Netherlands
This video was filmed during my trip through the Netherlands. Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle friendly major cities in the entire world, and it was a real pleasure being able to ride a bike through it and share it in this video!
As always, I have added in a digital speedometer and heart rate monitor, and included voice commentary to help keep the video interesting. If you like this format of video, please also check out the many videos that I have posted riding in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In this video I used my new Contour Roam 2 camera to shoot the action footage. I recorded the audio with my Panasonic voice recorder. I tracked the speed and heart rate using my Garmin eTrex 30 GPS, and wrote a basic program in Turing to display the numbers on the screen.
Special thanks to my Dad for being the navigator and follow vehicle for this ride! I definitely couldn't have done it without him leading the way!
I hope you enjoy this video. Please leave comments and SUBSCRIBE!
Thanks for watching!
Unbelievably busy bicycle crossing in Amsterdam
The Netherlands, Amsterdam, May 8, 2018
Bicycle and car traffic at the crossing Korte Prinsengracht and Haarlemmerstraat.
Arriving at school on a bicycle (Netherlands)
The large majority of Dutch children cycle to school. This is how they arrive at a school's bicycle parking facility in 's-Hertogenbosch (aka Den Bosch) in the Netherlands. There is nothing special about this school. All over the Netherlands schools look like this between 8 and 8.30 in the morning.

How Amsterdam Became a Bicycle Paradise
The Dutch capital Amsterdam is widely known for being bike-friendly. But it wasn’t always a model cycling city. Public outrage at rising traffic casualties in the Seventies caused city planners to rethink their approach to urban design.

Cycling in the snow, Utrecht (Netherlands)
First snow in winter 2010/2011. It wasn't heavy snow, but it did fall all day so the streets couldn't be cleared of it. Such a thin layer of snow didn't stop anybody cycling though. The video was taken around 3 in the afternoon. Many children were already going home after school and a lot of students and women were on their bicycles in Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. It wasn't rush hour yet.

Cycling in the rain; morning rush hour in Utrecht (Netherlands)
Contrary to popular belief it doesn't really rain often during rush hour in the Netherlands, but when it does we can see the Dutch do wear cycle gear when they have to. All types of gear to protect against the rain can be seen in these images. From umbrellas to capes and full rain suits. The footage was shot within half an hour in the center of Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands.

Cycling in the rain of the Netherlands
The Dutch say: 'You are not made of sugar, you won't melt in the rain!'. When you cycle for utility reasons the weather is of lesser importance. If you go to work by bike, you go there when the sun shines but of course also when it rains.
Weather conditions do not really change the number of cyclists in the Netherlands. The Dutch simply put on a rain coat, a rain suit, or they get out their umbrellas. Riding a bike while holding up an umbrella is perfectly normal in the Netherlands. And a lot of people feel they will simply dry up quickly enough again.
These pictures were taken on a cold and rainy April morning in Utrecht. The intersection is undergoing major reconstructions and building is taking place all around it. That is why it is not up to modern Dutch standards with its bad temporary road surface and ugly temporary concrete divisions. Ugly but safe enough. What makes the intersection really safe are the separate cycle traffic lights with separate green phases for cyclists.
Utrecht is the 4th largest city in the Netherlands with a population 300,000 and 33% of all trips in the city are made on a bicycle.
How to Cycle Like the Dutch in Amsterdam
How to cycle like the Dutch in Amsterdam, home to more bikes than people. The Dutch learn to cycle before they can walk. This plus the fact that cyclists have the right of way on the roads in Amsterdam makes them incredibly impatient when having to share bike lanes with tourists and expats who are not used to cycling like the Dutch. This videos shows you how to cycle in Amsterdam like the Dutch
