Independence Ghost Town | Old Gold Mining Town | Aspen | Colorado | USA
Independence ghost town is in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is located just off State Highway 82 in the eastern corner of Pitkin County, below the Continental Divide. It was the first settlement established in the Roaring Fork Valley, after gold was struck in the vicinity on Independence Day, July 4, 1879, hence its name. In 1973 it was recognized as a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Independence and Independence Mill Site, one of two ghost towns in the county so recognized. It has also been known historically by other names—Chipeta, Mammoth City, Mount Hope, Farwell, Sparkill and Hunter's Pass.

American Southwest (#09): Independence Ghost Town, Colorado
Independence ... Leadville miner Billy Belden led a group of prospectors over Independence Pass in 1879. Finding good placer deposits in the Roaring Fork River not far beyond the pass, they set up a tent camp and named it Belden. On the Fourth of July of that year, they struck pay dirt and named the claim Independence.
The town's name of Belden didn't last long, and new monikers were adopted so regularly that the Rocky Mountain News once glibly announced, This is about the fourth change. It is expected to hold good for a week or ten days . Writer Caroline Bancroft chronicled the changes succinctly, calling the town Belden - Independence - Chipeta -- Sidney -- Farwell -- Sparkhill - Mammoth City - Mount Hope -- Chipeta - Independence.
Independence Pass ... Whatever its name, the town was both a mining camp and a stagecoach layover stop. Within a few years, however, the ore had given out, and the railroad had reached Aspen, making travel over the pass unnecessary. By 1888, the population of Independence was only a hundred. By 1900, only Jack Williams, caretaker of the mill, remained. When he left in 1912, Independence was dead.
Independence (at 10,830 ft..) today is enjoyable because, like Ashcroft, it is being carefully preserved and cautiously restored by the Aspen Historical Society in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. On the east end of the site are four cabins, ranging from mere foundations to remnants six or seven logs high. In the center of town, three buildings are under roof, and a cabin ruin stands across the Roaring Fork River. A large hewn-log general store serves as town headquarters. Four roofless but restorable cabins stand nearby. The intern's cabin is west of the general store.

Independence Pass, Colorado
At 12,100 feet, the Continental Divide separates the eastern and western halves of the United States. A little parking lot and restroom are all the facilities available; no curios or kiosks; and a well-maintained footpath to a breathtaking observation point right at the snow line. Even in late July, patches of frost remain.
For the more intrepid, a well-worn dirt path follows the ridge line at the top of the range. An exhilarating walk in clean mountain air will never be forgotten.
Ghost Town Carr - In A Colorado Minute (Week 186) [HD]
- In my search for abandoned buildings (a personal passion) in Colorado, I came across a listing of ghost towns in Colorado.
This week, Scott, Whiskey and I drove out to the one near Fort Collins: the town of Carr. I won't deny that I was a bit disappointed to realize that the listing must have been old and the town of Carr had sprung back to life. Of course, that's great for the small local population.
We still discovered three abandoned buildings (the first one in the video is actually located in Rockport) and a natural sandstone fort, which is said to have been the location of battles between the Crow and Blackfoot tribes and gun fights between outlaws, cowboys and Native Americans.
Before we left the area, I got some shaky shots of a group of wild antelope run away from us. Unfortunately, we didn't see the thousands of buffalo that are supposed to be grazing on the surrounding fields.
The reason why I love abandoned buildings may be obvious to most: they are full of history, energy, stories and unplanned beauty. Something to discover, capture and hold dear.
I'm dedicating this video to my Berlin abandoned building / urbex (urban exploration) friends: Dave of andberlin, Georg of Digital Cosmonaut and Spudnik of Abandoned Berlin and Irish Berliner (since he's withholding his real name online, I won't blow his cover here).

American Southwest (#07): Ashcroft Ghost Town, Colorado
Ashcroft ... two prospectors from the new camp called Aspen found silver deposits along Castle Creek and formed their own camp, Castle Forks City, where the two forks of Castle Creek join. The boom year was 1882, when rich ore was found in the Montezuma and Tam O'Shanter mines. The owners received financial backing from Horace Tabor, who had recently become a very rich man in Leadville. In 1883, when Tabor came with his new bride Baby Doe to inspect his holdings, miners enjoyed a twenty-four-hour celebration that included a ball, banquet, and free drinks in the town's twenty saloons.
By then the place was known as Ashcraft, named with a slight variation - for prospector and town promoter T. E. Ashcraft, who had actually founded a short-lived competing camp called Highland. Ashcroft had a school, bowling alley, sawmill, smelter, two newspapers, six hotels, and a population of two thousand, making it larger than Aspen.
Ashcroft's ore bodies were quickly depleted, however, and by 1885 many of its buildings had been moved to Aspen, where major silver strikes attracted miners from all over. Ashcroft was a has-been, home to only a hundred summer residents. It was a ghost town by 1900, although the post office hung on for twelve more years, perhaps by bureaucratic oversight.
During World War II, the town was used for ski training by the Tenth Mountain Division from Camp Hale. After World War II, Stuart Mace, commander of the canine division of the Tenth Mountain Division, returned to Ashcroft to raise and train huskies. Mace and his dogs were featured in the 1950s television series Sergeant Preston of the Yukon with Ashcroft often used as the setting for the show.
Today Ashcroft is being protected and restored by the Aspen Historical Society. One can visit this genuine ghost town, enjoy the site, and leave with the feeling that the town will still be there if one returns years later. That is, unfortunately, seldom the case. The two-story Hotel View is the grandest and most photogenic structure in town. Other buildings include cabins, a mercantile, jail, blacksmith's shop, assay office, laundry, and post office. A saloon is the current headquarters for the historical society, where old photographs, account of the town's history.
