Indian Air Force Museum | New Delhi | Palam Airport | Delhi Tourism 2017
A visit to Indian Air Force museum situated near palam air port of New Delhi ( India). having a alot of old aircrafts and arms used by Indian Air Force during War times in the battle sky .
Indian Air Force Museum, Palam, April 27th, 2014
Just next to the Indira Gandhi International Airport, is located the Indian Air Force Museum, Palam. It is best reached by taxi. There is a parking lot just next to the entrance so the driver can wait here. A nice and polite Sikh guard with a rifle was posted at the entry. The staff is very nice and likes to talk about airplanes. There is a small souvenir shop where you can buy a few items at almost no cost.
The museum contains quite a few things of interest and it covers the story from the colonial days, the second world war to the birth of the India Air Forces and the space age and modern times.
The exhibition is quite large but somewhat worn down. It contains some rare and special items such as a Japanese suicide rocket plane (Ohka). There is also a B-24 on display, a Spitfire and a Hurricane and other propeller driven airplanes, along with the many special modern types from Russia and France. They even have some quite big transport planes.
Many exhibitions are dedicated to the wars with Pakistan with a number of war trophies proudly presented. A small special exhibition was dedicated the finding (US/India team) of a downed WWII B-24 in 2008.
According to rumors the museum is to move to another, larger and better location (just next to the current one) within a few years. Allegedly they also poses a C-47 that will join the display.
Very few locals and tourist know about this museum. I have been there two times and the first time ('07) I had everything to myself. Remember to bring the address or a map. Almost no taxi driver knows it's location - ask the hotel to explain the driver.

Mighty Indian air force museum in New delhi
The Indian Air Force (IAF; IAST: Bhāratīya Vāyu Senā) is the air arm of the Indian armed forces. It is the world's fourth largest air force.acIts primary responsibility is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during a conflict.Since independence, the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with the People's Republic of China. Other major operations undertaken by the IAF include Operation Vijay, Operation Meghdoot, Operation Cactus and Operation Poomalai. Apart from conflicts, the IAF has been an active participant in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Wing Commander H.S. Mangat's Sukhoi su7 at Indian Air Force Museum - Delhi
The Indian Air Force (IAF) used the Su-7 extensively in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Six squadrons, totaling in 140 aircraft, flew almost 1,500 offensive sorties during the war, and undertook the bulk of the daytime attack efforts. The IAF managed to retain a very high operational tempo with its Su-7s, peaking at a sortie rate of six per pilot per day. Fourteen Su-7s were lost during the war, mostly due to AA fire. After the war was over, it was found that the aircraft had a high survivability, being able fly home safely despite receiving heavy damage.
Wing Commander H. S. Mangat's Su-7 was badly damaged by a Sidewinder missile fired from PAF MiG-19. The impact was so severe that half the rudder was missing, the elevators, ailerons and flaps were severely damaged, and half the missile was stuck in the chute pipe. The pilot made it back to his base. The death of at least one Indian pilot can be attributed, at least indirectly, to poor cockpit design. A pilot set his seating at a dangerous position because he found the bomb sight and the front gun sight easier to operate while in that position, and was killed on ejection.
Air Force Museum, the only one of its kind in India, houses a rich collection of memorablia of Indian Military Aviation and displays the history of Indian Air Force.
The Museum reflects the very best of what the Indian Air Force has stood for in War and Peace. Its compilation is, in itself, a lasting tribute to hundreds of people who have each in their own way contributed to build a glorious tradition. It is befitting for a fighting service like the Indian Air Force to have a sense of history and tradition and the museum is a temple where memories of our glory are enshrined.
The most remarkable site of this Museum is a wall in one of it's sections. It has Roll of Honour in golden letters, of officers and men who made supreme sacrifice by laying down their lives in Kashmir Operation in 1947, Chinese Aggression 1962, Indo-Pak conflicts 1965 and 1971. Their names liveth forever more.
