The Indianapolis Cultural Trail: The Next-Gen in U.S. Protected Bike Lanes
In May, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, a bike & pedestrian path connecting some of Indy's most popular cultural institutions, had its long-awaited public coming out with a ribbon cutting and celebration. It's one of the biggest bicycling infrastructure achievements in North America, and yet it's still practically a secret.
As you'll see, the Cultural Trail runs eight fantastic miles through the heart of downtown and features beautiful stone work, green landscaping and even bioswales to absorb stormwater runoff. There is great signage and trail design with an eye for maximum safety. In many places, parking and/or a car travel lane was converted to trail space. But most importantly, the trail features ample room for both cyclists and pedestrians (most of the time in separate environments) to get around downtown, whether they're commuting, exercising, running errands, or just going for an afternoon jaunt. It's fun and very safe and people of all ages using it.
Across the U.S. cities such as NYC, Chicago, and Washington are doing tremendous work installing miles of protected bike lanes with inexpensive materials. Although the Cultural Trail cost quite a bit, it's nice to know that to find extensive downtown bike infrastructure made with beautiful, permanent materials, we don't have to look to Europe. We can go check out Indianapolis.
Note: Please don't miss our related Streetfilm on Indy's bike-friendly GOP Mayor Greg Ballard and a 2 minute short looking more in-depth at the bioswales and storm water management system along the Cultural Trail.

Cruisin' Indianapolis
Indianapolis (''Indy'') is the capital of the U.S. state of Indiana and it is the largest city in Indiana, with 12.8 percent of the state's total population. As of the 2010 census, the city's population is 820,445. It is the 12th-largest city in the United States (the third largest state capital) and the 29th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.
The city is second only to Washington, D.C., for the number of war monuments inside city limits. Both Forbes and Livability.com rank Indianapolis among the best downtowns in the United States citing more than 200 retail shops, more than 35 hotels, nearly 300 restaurants and food options, movie theaters, sports venues, museums, art galleries and parks as attractions
High rise construction in Indianapolis started in 1888 with the 256-foot (78m) high Indiana Statehouse, followed by the 284-foot (87m) Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in 1898. However, because of a special ordinance disallowing building higher than the structure, the monument remained the highest structure until the completion of the City-County Building in 1962.
Many of Indiana's largest and most recognized companies are headquartered in Indianapolis. Before Detroit came to dominate the American automobile industry, Indianapolis was also home to a number of carmakers, including Duesenberg, Marmon Motor Car Company and Stutz Motor Company.
8 miles of trail!
Constructed between 2007 and 2013, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail (a $63 million project with $864.5 million of estimated economic impact) is an urban bike and pedestrian path that connects the city's five downtown Cultural Districts, neighborhoods and entertainment amenities, and serves as the downtown hub for the entire central Indiana greenway system. The trail includes benches, bike racks, lighting, signage and 26 bike rentals/drop-offs (250 bikes) along the way and also features local art work. It was officially opened in May 2013.

Town Run Trail Park, Indianapolis - Mountain Biking
Town Run Trail Park, located in Indianapolis, Indiana, is a gem for nearby mountain bikers. Although it is on a much smaller scale compared to BCSP, it is nonetheless a great place to ride. Approximately 7 miles of trail, incorporating many jumps and a couple of drops (one of which is pretty wicked), is sure to amuse bikers of all skills. Brought newbie friend Rob this time....he had a blast!! Love, love, LOVE mountain biking!
