EXPO – Magic of the White City (Narrated by Gene Wilder)
Narrated by Gene Wilder, EXPO – Magic of the White City brings the Chicago World’s Fair to life. Experience the world of 1893 through a cinematic visit to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.

Nearly 28 million people visited the Fair. Dubbed the “White City,” it inspired future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright, unveiled the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jack®, and, in many ways, marked the beginning of the 20th century. Many of the era’s greatest achievements in science, technology and culture were unveiled there. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his design of New York City’s Central Park, and constructed under the supervision of Daniel Burnham.
The Fair was an engineering marvel. On opening day, President Grover Cleveland depressed a golden telegraph key which sent the first courses of electricity throughout the Fair powering fountains, machines, electric railways and thousands of lights. It was the first use of electricity on such a massive scale.
In addition, fairgoers enjoyed the Midway Plaisance where a one-mile boulevard of fun offered camel riding and guilty pleasures such as belly dancing, street fighting and beer drinking. Against the backdrop of 1893’s troubles with workers’ rights, prejudice, discrimination and corruption, the World’s Columbian Exposition cast a brief ray of hope for the future of humanity.
Filmed in spectacular High-Definition, EXPO – Magic of the White City immerses viewers in one of the world’s biggest extravaganzas and one of the most unforgettable events in American history. There will never be another event like it… or will there?

The Market Revolution: Crash Course US History #12
In which John Green teaches you about the Market Revolution. In the first half of the 19th century, the way people lived and worked in the United States changed drastically. At play was the classic (if anything in a 30 year old nation can be called classic) American struggle between the Jeffersonian ideal of individuals sustaining themselves on small farms vs. the Hamiltonian vision of an economy based on manufacturing and trade. I'll give you one guess who won. Too late! It was Hamilton, which is why if you live in the United States, you probably live in a city, and are unlikely to be a farmer. Please resist the urge to comment about this if you live in the country and/or are a farmer. Your anecdotal experience doesn't change the fact that most people live in cities. In the early 19th century, new technologies in transportation and communication helped remake the economic system of the country. Railroads and telegraphs changed the way people moved goods and information around. The long and short of it is, the Market Revolution meant that people now went somewhere to work rather than working at home. Often, that somewhere was a factory where they worked for an hourly wage rather than getting paid for the volume of goods they manufactured. This shift in the way people work has repercussions in our daily lives right down to today. Watch as John teaches you how the Market Revolution sowed the seeds of change in the way Americans thought about the roles of women, slavery, and labor rights. Also, check out high school John wearing his Academic Decathalon medals. Support CrashCourse on Patreon:
Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. As America invested in its market economy, certain transcendentalists resisted the rise of production and consumerism over individual freedoms, including Henry David Thoreau in his book Walden:
Ralph Waldo Emerson promoted transcendental values as well in his essay “Self-Reliance”:
Steve Porter “Flanagan's Troubles In A Restaurant” Edison Gold Moulded Record 9495 (1907)
Steve Porter performs “Flanagan's Troubles In A Restaurant” on Edison Gold Moulded Record 9495, issued in 1907.
This kind of Irish comic sketch is tedious, but I upload this since this cylinder has historic interest for its very good sound quality.
Contrast this fine sound quality with the limited sound quality of discs pressed in 1907. Edison cylinders were superior in sound in 1907.
Victor discs would soon eclipsed cylinders in sound quality. I would say that by 1908, Edison cylinders and Victor discs were about even in sound quality. Then a few years would pass, and Edison was in decline. Edison cylinders sounded terrible as soon as the Blue Amberol process started (wobbly, ridiculous dubbings).
Steve Porter's comic abilities were modest--or let's say Porter in such skits is only as good or bad as the writers of the jokes. These jokes are lame.
Indeed, very little spoken comedy from this decade holds up well. Uncle Josh monologues give me no pleasure. As for Len Spencer skits--ouch! No.
Such comic material fails to hold up a century later.
Such recordings--I mean the comedy records of Steve Porter, Cal Steward, and Len Spencer--were marketed as vaudeville sketches, and it makes me suspect many vaudeville programs at the local theater were tedious. Perhaps the best of vaudeville survived in some Buster Keaton shorts of the 1920s and various early talking films, leaving us today with the illusion that vaudeville in America was a vibrant art form, but a lot of vaudeville entertainment was not worth preserving.
However, this old cylinder is in very good condition. That clean condition was the deciding factor on whether to upload or not.
Steve Porter performs Christmas Morning at Clancey's
Sound file done by Cary Ginell.
Porter, Steve (c. 1862 - 13 January 1936)
Steven Carl Porter was born in Buffalo, New York. Jim Walsh wrote in the May 1952 issue of Hobbies, Death notices gave his age as 73, so he probably was born in 1862. He began his show business career as a vaudeville comic in the 1890s and on records became known for Irish humor. His most important contributions to records was as a baritone of popular quartets, especially the Peerless and American.
Victor catalogs state, Mr. Porter is one of the pioneer makers of talking machine records, having been engaged in this work since 1897. Porter's first known Berliner session was on July 29, 1897. One disc featured Sally Warner (1757), the disc's surface noting the date. This was followed by a session one day later, and he was in the studio again on August 13, 1897 to cut Sweet Rosie O'Grady (537) and other numbers. He made other Berliners in 1897, some when Porter sang as member of the Diamond Four, which also featured Albert Campbell. As a solo artist Porter made two dozen Berliners, mostly hymns and popular ballads. The November-December 1897 issue of The Phonoscope lists Porter among the personnel of the Greater New York Quartet, which also included Roger Harding, Len Spencer, and a singer named Depew.
Porter is not in Columbia's June 1897 list but over 60 Porter titles are in the 1898 list, which states, Mr. Steve Porter is a valuable acquisition to the staff of Columbia Entertainers. He is possessed of a rich baritone voice. On these brown wax cylinders, as on Berliner discs, he sings mostly songs of a sentimental, patriotic, or sacred nature. His comic talents must have become evident to industry executives only after he established himself as a recording artist.
The July 1898 issue of The Phonoscope refers to Porter as a member of the Ocean Yacht Club of Staten Island. Porter's yacht, the Chiquita, was 42 feet long and had a 14-foot beam (few record artists of this time could have afforded yachts). That such information was published in a trade journal suggests he was by this time well-known to industry insiders. The February 1899 issue of the trade journal states, Fred Hylands, Roger Harding, and Steve Porter are the enterprising young men who have recently organized a song publishing company under the name of the Knickerbocker Music Publishing Co. The involvement of Harding and Porter was brief. The April issue of the trade journal announces that it had been renamed Hylands, Spencer and Yeager--Len Spencer had taken an interest in the firm.
