EXPO – Magic of the White City (Narrated by Gene Wilder)
Narrated by Gene Wilder, EXPO – Magic of the White City brings the Chicago World’s Fair to life. Experience the world of 1893 through a cinematic visit to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.
Subscribe for more great documentaries!
Nearly 28 million people visited the Fair. Dubbed the “White City,” it inspired future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright, unveiled the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jack®, and, in many ways, marked the beginning of the 20th century. Many of the era’s greatest achievements in science, technology and culture were unveiled there. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his design of New York City’s Central Park, and constructed under the supervision of Daniel Burnham.
The Fair was an engineering marvel. On opening day, President Grover Cleveland depressed a golden telegraph key which sent the first courses of electricity throughout the Fair powering fountains, machines, electric railways and thousands of lights. It was the first use of electricity on such a massive scale.
In addition, fairgoers enjoyed the Midway Plaisance where a one-mile boulevard of fun offered camel riding and guilty pleasures such as belly dancing, street fighting and beer drinking. Against the backdrop of 1893’s troubles with workers’ rights, prejudice, discrimination and corruption, the World’s Columbian Exposition cast a brief ray of hope for the future of humanity.
Filmed in spectacular High-Definition, EXPO – Magic of the White City immerses viewers in one of the world’s biggest extravaganzas and one of the most unforgettable events in American history. There will never be another event like it… or will there?

The skyscrapers of New York
SUMMARY
This melodrama was filmed during the actual construction of a skyscraper in New York City, and includes several scenes of real work crews: a line of bricklayers [Frame: 1773 (part 1)], a man heating rivets in a forge [2459 (part 1)], riveters assembling steel girders [2859 (part 1)], men astride the steel framework maneuvering and setting a girder in place [3930 (part 1)], and a group of men descending on a crane line [5912 (part 1)]. The story involves a construction foreman who fires one of his crew for fighting, which leads the disgruntled employee to steal. He causes the blame to be put on the foreman, who is finally exonerated when the thief is exposed. All of this conflict is woven in and around the actual construction of the building as the work is in progress. There is even one scene of a hand-to-hand fight between the foreman and the villain that takes place on the unprotected ledge of the steel framework of the building. Some New York City landmarks seen in the film include Union Square (between Broadway and 4th Avenue, 14th-17th Street), and the Everett House, opposite the northeast corner of the square at 17th St. and 4th Avenue [1056 (part 1)]. The film includes the original AM&B title frames at head of film [0105-0272].

George Westinghouse changed the face of the world with his inventions, patents, business sense, and personality.
Not a day goes by that we don't use something pioneered by George Westinghouse.
He is the forgotten role model that our country needs today to teach future generations of Americans that hard work and kindness pay off.
George Westinghouse was one of the most successful men in the world. A respected engineer, inventor and America's greatest industrialist.
He was a pioneer of the industrial revolution and played a leading role in turning the United States from a young agrarian society into a modern economic powerhouse.
The name Westinghouse has been a household name the world over for more than 100 years because of one man, his love of machines, and his desire to make the world a better place.
The accomplishments that George Westinghouse had in his lifetime had a major impact on the way we live today.
His work in the railroad industry with the Westinghouse air brake, the electrification of the world with Westinghouse alternating current, him being instrumental in developing natural gas as a fuel, and his impact on the shipping industry with the Westinghouse geared marine turbine engine.
George Westinghouse was known as a good person.
He always had a very good rapport with his workers. There was never a strike at any of the Westinghouse companies all the time he had control of them.
And, you know, that was not common back in those days. He certainly was not motivated by greed or money. He really thought that his accomplishments would benefit mankind. And that alone was a driving force for him. This film also engages in the power struggle between Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.

The Untold History Between Blacks and Native Americans (American Secret You Must Know)
There is an untold history between Blacks and Native Americans. It is an American Secret that you must know and share with the next generation. There is so much more to learn about the history of people of color. This session is part 2 of the story about the mass suicide at Igbo Landing in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The Gates of Huldah has uncovered the rich history of the relationship that existed between the Natives and Blacks for centuries before Christopher Columbus came to America. At the end of this session, you will learn about the Doctrine of Discovery that was sanctioned by the Catholic Church. This little-known doctrine promoted European domination and the enslavement of these two groups.

ABOUT THIS FEED:
Ashland, VA, in Central Virginia, is located on the CSX RF&P Subdivision, the former Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad, and is about 15 miles north of Richmond. The town gets over 20 Amtrak passenger trains and 20-25+ CSX freight trains daily. It’s a designated quiet zone, but the crew can use the horns at their discretion. The maximum speed for trains passing through the town's center is 35 miles per hour (MPH).
There are 3 cameras available. The default camera is an Axis 360 located on top of the Visitor’s Center (train station), and 2 static cameras facing North and South on the other side of the intersection. Desktop users can use the suitcase icon at the bottom of the video to toggle between cams. For other devices, you can access the static cams with the links above.
See Tiny Tim’s Trains and Toys Store on the south cam? It's awesome, and worth a visit. Tell Suzanne and crew we said hello!
There is no ATCS layout (and no server coverage) available for the RF&P Sub, as it does not use radio code line (RCL) for switch-and-signal control (RCL is essential for ATCS availability).
There is a radio feed available, listening to the CSX RF&P Sub (BD dispatcher) and Richmond Terminal (FB dispatcher) channels, as well as the Buckingham Branch Railroad's (BBRR) Piedmont Sub channel (which crosses the RF&P Sub at a diamond in Doswell, to the north of Ashland):
A second radio feed providing the Richmond Terminal channel, as well as those for both the North End and Bellwood Subs, can be found here (select the Richmond Area Stream):
When’s the next train? Yeah, we get this a lot. You can figure out the next Amtrak passenger train with this handy link:
There’s no schedule for freight trains, but some of our more knowledgeable members will provide real-time information when it’s available. Please refrain from asking.

Lake Michigan is the third largest of the Great Lakes (22,400 square miles) and the only one located entirely within the United States. At least since 1670, when Marquette and Joliet crossed the Chicago Portage, Lake Michigan has been Chicago's link to the wider world. A resource alternately treasured and plundered, the lake has served at various times as Chicago's dumping ground, a place from which to reclaim vital recreational space, and a source of drinking water. In 1818 the boundary of the new state of Illinois was adjusted 60 miles to the north so as to include the shore of the lake as part of the state's eastern boundary. Without this shift Chicago would not even have been located in Illinois.
The lake's name is derived from the Algonquin word Michigami, meaning “great water.” In the language of economics that great water functioned as an inexpensive medium of transportation and an integrated system of circulation for the communities within the Lake Michigan basin. As the market and hub for that basin, Chicago shaped the transformation of the coastal areas of Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan into discrete zones of economic activity. During the years between 1860 and 1900 hundreds of lumber schooners tied the frontier sawmill towns of northern Michigan and Wisconsin to the Chicago lumber market. During those same years steam-powered excursion and packet vessels linked Chicago with the small ports of southwestern Michigan and Door County, Wisconsin, unloading tourists and taking on crates of fresh fruits. Norwegian, Irish, and Native American fisherman fed Chicago and the region thousands of tons of whitefish and trout.
A less scenic transformation took place along the Little Calumet and Grand Calumet Rivers. Giant bulk freighters united the iron mines and stone quarries of the North with the coal fields of the South in the steel towns at the southern end of Lake Michigan. In each case it was Chicago as a market, as a source of capital, and as a distribution center which shaped the shores of the entire lake. Chicagoans created the illusion that the pollution of sawmills could be segregated from commercial fishing, that agricultural production existed in harmony with vacation beach resorts, that the city was immune from the effluvium of metal fabrication.
Lake Michigan also has provided a respite from urban congestion. From the middle to the end of the nineteenth century vigorous young Chicagoans were attracted to the wild dunes and beaches of the Near North and South Sides. Sailing was also popular, although it was not until 1875 that elite Chicagoans began to organize yacht clubs to facilitate the sport. Aaron Montgomery Ward's lawsuits and Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago finally laid the foundation for a lakefront of parks, harbors, and beaches open to the masses of the city.
