Join David as he shows you around the top 15 places to see in Istanbul! Istanbul is one of the only transcontinental cities on the planet, spreading across Europe and Asia Minor. As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul is a bustling hub of culture, history and gastronomy – a cosmopolitan capital in every sense.
David begins in the oldest part of the city, the Sultanahmet District. He begins in the Hippodrome (circus), which served as the center of public life for the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine citizens. Present-day Sultan Ahmed Square has a handful of surviving remnants from ancient times.
Near Sultan Ahmed Square are two of Turkey’s most visited attractions, steps from one another – the Ayia Sofia (Hagia Sophia) and Blue Mosque. The Ayia Sofia is now a museum, but was built as an Eastern Orthodox Basilica in 535 A.D. It was a Christian church for over 900 years before the Ottomans used it as a Mosque for another 481 years. It was the largest house of worship in the world for over 1,000 years!
Across the square is the Blue Mosque. Its name comes from the blue tiles used to decorate the interior. Nearby sits the stunning 15th century Topkapi Palace that served as the home and governmental seat for the Ottoman sultans until the 1850s. A tour will reveal beautiful stonework and intricately decorated staterooms, as well as a crown jewel and Imperial treasury exhibition.
After the palace, David takes us to the Archaeology Museum to show us some of what was uncovered in Istanbul. Perhaps the most impressive thing on display is the Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great with its detailed reliefs depicting Alexander’s life of successful conquering.
Not too far from the museum is the Basilica Cistern – a damp and dark subterranean cavern used to collect water for the city. The Medusa heads were likely stolen from a nearby Greco-Roman city to support the columns. Medusa’s face provided a warning against anyone who dared to tamper with the water supply.
The next day, David heads over to the 300-year-old Cağaloğlu Hamamı for a Turkish bath. This Hammam provides full-service spa treatments including scrubbing, steam baths, and massages. Definitely a MUST experience when in Istanbul.
David then heads to the shores of the Bosphorus for a scenic boat ride along the strait. From the water you’ll get panoramic vistas of the Istanbul skyline and get to enjoy view of other areas of this enormous city.
After arriving back on land, David heads to the Beyoğlu District to beautiful pedestrian-friendly Istiklal Street, or “Independence Avenue” for some lunch. It spans about 1.4 kilometers and is the perfect place for shopping and dining. You can walk or take the Nostalgic Tram in either direction. The end of Istiklal Street takes David into the heart of Istanbul, Taksim Square. In the center of the square is the Monument of the Republic (1928) commemorating the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Onto the Galata District to see a Whirling Dervish show at the Galata Museum. This 800-year old practice of spinning is used as a physical form of meditation. It is a mysterious and beautiful site to behold.
You can’t visit the Galata District and not notice the Galata Tower. It looks over Istanbul and provides 360-degree views of the city, the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and landmarks.
After all that sightseeing, David works up an appetite so he heads to the Karaköy waterfront to enjoy a cheap meal with a 5-star view. Nearby is the fish market. You can’t get to the Karaköy or Galata without crossing the Galata Bridge. From here you’ll see the skylines of both Sultanahmet and Galata districts.
Lastly, David goes out to one of the most exclusive entertainment complexes in the world. Reina sits along the Bosphorus and offers world-class dining, nightclubs, and beautiful ambiance. Dress to impress and make dinner reservations so you can stay after to party!

The newly inaugurated July 15 Memorial Museum in the Turkish city of Istanbul welcomed visitors on Friday, giving them a glimpse of the events that took place during the failed coup attempt on the night of July 15 2016 and to commemorate the people killed that night.
Displays inside the museum include the beret and dagger of Sergeant Major Omer Halisdemir who was killed on duty on the night of July 15, while preventing the capture of the headquarters of the Special Forces Command in Ankara, as well as footwear of other people killed that night. Visitors also watched various photographs and films explaining the events that unfolded.
The museum has been built on 1,500 square-metres (16,146 square foot) of land and also features a small mosque.
The museum was inaugurated by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 15 marking the third anniversary of the failed coup attempt on the night of July 15 2016 against the ruling government.

ISTANBUL: EXPLORING the CARPET MARKETS at the GRAND BAZAAR (Turkey) ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's take a brief look at this carpet market which is located just around the corner from the famous Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul is a major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its Old City reflects cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled here. In the Sultanahmet district, the open-air, Roman-era Hippodrome was for centuries the site of chariot races, and Egyptian obelisks also remain. The iconic Byzantine Hagia Sophia features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics.
Turkey is a nation straddling eastern Europe and western Asia with cultural connections to ancient Greek, Persian, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Cosmopolitan Istanbul, on the Bosphorus Strait, is home to the iconic Hagia Sophia, with its soaring dome and Christian mosaics, the massive 17th-century Blue Mosque and the circa-1460 Topkapı Palace, former home of sultans. Ankara is Turkey’s modern capital.

First Thoughts On Turkey - 48 Hours in Istanbul
We are back in Istanbul, ready to spend an exciting 48 hours in this incredible Turkish city!
Our first stop is to meet up with some friends for breakfast before making our way over to the Grand Bazaar for some exploring and taste testing. We tried our first Turkish delight and Turkish coffee and wow they go so well together... you need to try them together!
Next up we went on a ferry ride to the Asian Continent which is still apart of Istanbul city - the only city in the world to be split across 2 continents. On our way back we made a stop over at Galata Tower to watch the sunset.
The next morning we got up bright and early to explore the Blue Mosque - the very first mosque we have ever been inside before one more sip of tea with the most insane view of the Hagia Sophia museum before checking into our new hotel so we can meet our Intrepid Travel crew.
Spots we visited:
* Breakfast - Van Kahlvalti
* The Grand Bazaar
* Turkish Coffee Spot - Sark Kahvesi
* Ferry to Asian side of Istanbul
* Galata Tower for sunset
* The Blue Mosque
* Seven Hills Hotel for Turkish tea and insane view of Hagia Sophia

Entry:
Sunday 25th May 2008 Sydney-Singapore-Dubai-Istanbul Go over to Adam's about midday, but he's not home. Arrives shortly after - been held up at Touch Football. Gives us lift to airport, and in return gets to keep the car for the next two months. Our flight leaves at 3.30pm. We're flying to Singapore with Singapore Airlines on the new A380, which is enormous, with an upstairs and downstairs, and holds over 600 passengers. Each seat has its own large, on demand movie screen with a big choice of movies, and there is plenty of leg room. There also seems to be plenty of staff,as all meals are served quickly. Definitely a good experience. Get into Singapore just before midnight. Have to transfer to another terminal, but have nearly two hours before our next flight, so no problem. Our next plane is fine, but definitely not up to the same standard as the brand new A380. Have a seven hour flight to Dubai - manage to get a little sleep during it. Have an hour in Dubai. Murray stays on the plane, but Dianne goes to the transit lounge to get some exercise. Have a half kilometre walk in - stop at duty free and buy a litre of gin for US12.50, then walk half kilometre back to our gate. Have a ten-minute wait, then time to board. Murray was happy to see that I got back OK. Another four-hour flight, and we're in Istanbul about 7am, local time, 23 hours after leaving home. Monday 26th May Istanbul The new us (the ones that spend money on luxuries, rather than always taking the cheapest way) get a YTL30 taxi to the Hotel Nomade which is in the centre of Sultanahmet. When we get to Sultanahmet it is obvious that he doesn't know where the hotel is, although he had sounded confident when he approached us. We give him the address, and he asks a number of people, and we drive around and around, which is not easy as there are lots of narrow one-way streets, and streets with the trams taking up most of them. Eventually he stops a policeman, and he hops out and has a long discussion. Gets back in - he's now confident he knows where it is, and promptly reverses a few hundred metres. Can now see the hotel across the street and down a side street, so we hop out. Hotel is expecting us. Room is not ready yet (it's only 9am), so leave our bags and head out to have a look around. We're staying just up from the Pudding Shop which was famous on the Hippie Trail and which we ate at in 1976, and again in 1977, on our way home through Asia on public transport. Recognise the location, but the interior has changed, although they have lots of photos from that era. Lots of streets are now cobble-stoned, whereas they weren't before - definitely a lot more boutiquey than before, with a nice atmosphere. The main drag, Divan Yolu, now has a modern tramline running up the middle of it. Back to the hotel about 10am, but room will be another 10 minutes so we go up to check out the hotel's roof garden, which has wonderful views of the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya, and as far as the Bosphorus, which is one of the reasons we chose this reasonably expensive hotel (162.5 YTL per night, after discount for cash). After another short walk, room is finally ready about 10.30am, so up to unpack, and have a couple of hours of much-needed sleep. Afterwards head up into the labyrinths of the Grand Bazaar, where there are over 4,000 shops and several kilometres of lanes. This has not changed much in 30 years. Follow the main thoroughfare, then out into the surrounding streets and down through the Spice Bazaar, before coming out at the Galata Bridge. Buy a fish roll ...

Hagia Sophia Interior Panorama Istanbul Turkey Vacation Old Town Ottoman Empire
I enter Hagia Sophia and do a Panorama view including the interior dome.
From Wikipedia:
Museum (1943--present)
In 1935, the first Turkish President and founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, transformed the building into a museum. The carpets were removed and the marble floor decorations such as the Omphalion appeared for the first time in centuries, while the white plaster covering many of the mosaics was removed. Nevertheless, the condition of the structure deteriorated, and the World Monuments Fund placed Hagia Sophia on 1996 World Monuments Watch, and again in 1998. The building's copper roof had cracked, causing water to leak down over the fragile frescoes and mosaics. Moisture entered from below as well. Rising ground water had raised the level of humidity within the monument, creating an unstable environment for stone and paint. With the help of financial services company American Express, WMF secured a series of grants from 1997 to 2002 for the restoration of the dome. The first stage of work involved the structural stabilization and repair of the cracked roof, which was undertaken with the participation of the Turkish Ministry of Culture. The second phase, the preservation of the dome's interior, afforded the opportunity to employ and train young Turkish conservators in the care of mosaics. By 2006, the WMF project was complete, though other areas of Hagia Sophia continue to require conservation.[32]
Today, use of the complex as a place of worship (mosque or church) is strictly prohibited.[33] However, in 2006, it was reported that the Turkish government allowed the allocation of a small room in the museum complex to be used as a prayer room for Christian and Muslim museum staff.[34] The museum's hours are 9.30 am to 4.30 pm, Tuesday through Sunday; entry fee is 20 TL, or free with the use of a Museum Card.
Turkish fine arts photographer Ahmet Ertuğ's close-up pictures of the restored mosaics can be viewed in the upper northern gallery of the Hagia Sophia in a permanent exhibition.[35]
Topkapi Palace | Turkey | Istanbul
History of the Topkapı Palace: Turkey | Istanbul
Topkapı Palace was not only the residence of the Ottoman sultans, but also the administrative and educational centre of the state. Initially constructed between 1460 and 1478 by Sultan Mehmed II, the conqueror of Constantinople, and expanded upon and altered many times throughout its long history, the palace served as the home of the Ottoman sultans and their court until the middle of the 19th century. In the early 1850s, the palace became inadequate to the requirements of state ceremonies and protocol, and so the sultans moved to Dolmabahçe Palace, located on the Bosphorus. Despite this move, the royal treasure, the Holy Relics of the Prophet Muhammad, and the imperial archives continued to be preserved at Topkapı, and-since the palace was the ancestral residence of the Ottoman dynasty as well as the place where the Holy Relics were preserved-Topkapı continued to play host to certain state ceremonies. Following the abolishment of the Ottoman monarchy in 1922, Topkapı Palace was converted into a museum on April 3rd 1924, on the order of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. After the conquest of Constantinople, Sultan Mehmed II (r. 1444-46, 1451-81) had a palace built in what is modern-day Istanbul’s Beyazıt district, on the spot where the University of Istanbul stands today; this first palace subsequently became known as the Old Palace (Eski Saray). Following the construction of the Old Palace, Mehmed II then had the Tiled Kiosk (Çinili Köşk) built, followed by Topkapı Palace itself, to which the court relocated when construction was complete. Mehmed called this place the New Palace (Sarây-ı Cedîd). The palace received its current name when Sultan Mahmud I (r. 1730-54) had a large wooden palace constructed near the city’s Byzantine walls, in front of which were placed several ceremonial cannons. This seaside palace was named the Cannon Gate Palace by the Sea (Topkapusu Sâhil Sarâyı), and when this palace was destroyed in a fire, its name was transferred to Mehmed II’s New Palace. Topkapı Palace, which developed and grew over the centuries, had a design that played an important role in Ottoman governmental philosophy and in the relations between the palace and its subjects. When Topkapı was first built, its plan was influenced by the splendor of the Edirne Palace located on the Tunca River, which had been constructed by Mehmed II’s father, Sultan Murad II (r. 1421-44, 1446-51) but very little of which survives today. The basic design of the palace is centred on various courtyards and gardens, around which are arranged offices devoted to state business, the buildings and pavilions serving as the residence of the sovereign and the buildings set aside for the court employees who lived in the palace. Topkapı Palace is built atop the Byzantine acropolis on Sarayburnu at the tip of the Istanbul peninsula. It is surrounded by the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. On the land side, the palace is surrounded by 1,400-meter-long high encircling walls-known as the “Royal Walls” (Sûr-ı Sultânî)-while on the side facing the sea it is surrounded by Byzantine walls. The palace covers an area of approximately 700,000 square meters, a major part of which area is set aside for the Royal Gardens (Hasbahçe). The court of Topkapı Palace proper is made up of two basic organizations: the Outer Palace (Bîrûn) and the Inner Palace (Enderûn); the Harem was a part of the latter. The design of residences, ceremonies and ceremonial spaces, and all of the many palace facilities were set out according to this basic organizational principle. Within the Topkapı Palace complex are three main gates-the Imperial Gate (Bâb-ı Hümâyûn), the Gate of Salutation (Bâbüsselâm), and the Gate of Felicity (Bâbüssaâde)-four courtyards, the Harem, the Royal Gardens-today known as the Rose Garden (Gülbahçe)-and various other gardens.
