Time lapse of Her Fingers Move Like Water by Daniel Ostrov
Daniel Ostrov's Her Fingers Move Like Water is currently installed in the Museum's lobby.
Ostrov states, It was created in Philadelphia during the International Turning Exchange (ITE) Residency through the Center for Art in Wood. This residency took place during the summer of 2012 and lasted for two months. During this residency I created a number of sculptures for a group show that was held at the Center in August. At the end of the residency, this sculpture was donated to the Center to become part of their permanent collection. Along with this...I created one other mobile entitled Koan. These pieces were inspired by the work of Alexander Calder as well as a number of other suspended sculptures that I had been looking at. I realized the potential for use of steam bent wood in creating mobiles due to both the lightness of the material as well as it's overall strength. The mobiles were created using a process of steam bending wood around a series of profiles, similar to the way that wooden boats are built. The monofilament patterning in the mobile was inspired by the work of the Constructivist sculptor, Naum Gabo. The potential of the mobile intrigues me as it gives the sculptor the unique ability to fill large volumes of space with kinetic work. The piece is meant to respond to the airflow in the space created by currents from the doors being opened as well as patrons moving through the atrium. The title of the sculpture was given in homage to my then girlfriend (now wife) Stephanie. She helped me tirelessly during the residency and I wouldn't have been able to create this sculpture or many subsequent sculptures without her... it is really an honor to have the sculpture displayed at the James A. Michener Art Museum. The atrium space with light coming from 360 degree windows is really spectacular.
